Somebody explain something about rap to me.

May 18, 2014, 8:20 PM

I've tried to sing, and I can't do it, because it requires talent, of which apparently I have none, and professional training and hours of practice if you're gonna pursue it professionally.

I've never tried to rap, however, I can't imagine it requiring any real talent at all, much less training, or practice besides memorizing the words. I'm pretty sure I could do it as good as anybody. I'm pretty sure almost anybody could do it.

What am I missing?

it might have something to do with the culture

that you were raised in

I'm sure the culture I was raised in has everything to do

May 18, 2014, 8:32 PM

with whether or not I like it or understand it. I guess that's why I'm asking for help. Does it really require any talent to rap, minus any real melody? If so, how so? What does it take?

I refuse to defend rap-type music, but I would say

May 18, 2014, 8:29 PM

I think it takes more talent than you think, to spit that jibber-jabber in ryhthm, and have creative words too. And that whole sampling thing takes some talent.

that being said, I don't like it. at all. Haven't decided on the bottom between "urban" and "opera".

2025 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Okay - so it takes some rhythm. Check - I think I've got

May 18, 2014, 8:41 PM

that.

Creative words? I think that's highly debatable, but I'm not talking about writing the lyrics, I'm just talking about the performance. Remember, I'm talking about comparing the talent required to sing vs. the talent required to rap.

I'm almost 100% positive that I have the rhythm required to pull this off at a very high level, as there is nothing complex here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SoKFycTmVU

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That would not take an extraordinary amount of rhythm at all

May 18, 2014, 9:03 PM

and probably millions of people meet that requirement sufficiently to pull that off.

May 18, 2014, 9:17 PM

white dude, I'd look like an idiot trying to rap. Not because I don't have the required talent, of which it requires almost none, but because it would be culturally ridiculous and unconvincing.

Many rappers are hated for their "flow"

May 18, 2014, 9:24 PM

so there is a musicality to how the words are said.

Like singing, everyone has the ability to rap, the question is quality of that ability.

Do you think you could just write great poetry? or a book?

May 18, 2014, 9:07 PM

You know how to write and you have a vocabulary, but what separates you from the greats?

Rap often is more cultural artistry, but the great ones can be poets and say much more provocative and empowering things than any singer. Rap is raw (at its highest) and actually has a lot in common with Johnny Cash's style of country/blues music (especially folsom prison).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, I don't think I could just write great poetry or a book.

May 18, 2014, 9:13 PM

Why do you ask that?

I could sure as he!! recite the words to a poem about as good as anybody though, which is what I'm talking about. I'm not talking about writing anything - my question was only about the performance. With no melody to speak of, pure rap seems to me like people, in effect, reciting "poetry" with music blaring in the background. That wouldn't take much talent at all.

Above all else, love and forgive. Understand that people who disagree with you are not necessarily idiots or your enemies. Respect the wisdom of the founding fathers and individual rights and freedoms. Always see the beauty and humor in life.

The idea is that they wrote the words and produced the music

May 18, 2014, 9:21 PM

or had a hand in producing (the music). Most singers just sing (often poorly live) other's words and have almost nothing to do with the music. I could do that.

Do you care more about the words spoken/sung or the quality of singing? It sounds like you like the latter more than the former and that's ok, many do. Rap is supposed to be more about the words than the quality they are presented. (again, similar to Johnny Cash)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just my opinion, but I think there are great singers with

May 18, 2014, 10:51 PM

unbelievable voices who do amazing, heartfelt covers of great songs. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing you don't have the natural gift that would allow you to do that. Remember Whitney Houston's National Anthem a few years back? That takes talent.

I'd rather listen to Lassie bark than listen to someone like, for instance, Celine Dion. However, It would be absurd to suggest that she doesn't have a tremendous gift and immense talent as a performer. Relatively speaking, there are very few people who can do what she does as well as she does it, even with unlimited practice and training.

On the other hand, I don't see anything about a lot of rap (like the Kanye West clip above) that couldn't be replicated by, relatively speaking, a vastly greater number of people. I just think there are millions of people, who with very little training, could pull it off. It doesn't take anywhere near the level of talent as the examples given above.

Again, just my opinion, but there are good singers who don't have great voices, particularly in Rock music, but still have a great deal more talent than rappers who never or rarely have to carry a tune. Singers have to have the timing and rhythm just like rappers, but they have to carry a tune on top of it, which is much more difficult and rules out a lot of people.

I agree that rap is more about the quality of the words than the quality they are presented. That is kind of my point.

Kanye is a bad example

May 19, 2014, 12:24 AM

his genius or talent is more in producing (the music bit) and overall ideas. Few find his lyrics great.

Whitney's anthem was great, but there is a STRONG argument it was taken to the next level by the context in which it was performed. She was but a part of the overall production. And no, I can't sing worth a lick. (Can't rap either)

I think the confusion is in the comparison of singing to rap. They are both separate art forms that exist in a similar medium. It's like comparing a stringed instrument(say a guitar) and a percussion instrument(say a drum), both have very different sounds and talent basis to perform them correctly. They compliment one another nicely though and are found so often performing together in everything from an orchestra to a garage band. It's why so many songs today also feature both a singer and a rapper (they are different, but compliment one another)

I think so many think they can rap, just like many think they can sing. The truth is it's not as easy as it might seem. I would argue that in both cases, luck plays a huge role in success.

carrying a tune and having a flow is similar in my opinion. If you are out of tune or off flow, it's going to sound horrible. I will concede though, that if you are out of tune, rarely will can you still make it unless you try to make that part of the act (yoko ono) whereas many rappers, unfortunately can make it without having good flow (mase back in the 90s, and drake more recently). But like with pop singers, their success is more about marketing than talent.

Something different:

Check out some freestyle stuff, it's beyond impressive (even my 64 year old father thinks the freestyle stuff is amazing considering it's all impromptu)
(or just watch 8mile for the hollywood version, lol)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUcJRKVuPak

I will say, I defend rap, but I'm not the biggest fan of it. Like jazz, I respect it more than I actually enjoy listening to it.

May 19, 2014, 12:44 AM

But seriously, try to put together two sentences that rhyme that also make sense. The do it to a beat. Then do it in a way that's original and distinctive (after all, like you said, anybody can just recite lyrics) and put music to it. No, not all of the rap beats are sampled.

It's not as easy as you think.

Btw, do you think all those singers write their own songs?

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's amazing, how in spite of repeated, consistent efforts

May 19, 2014, 7:48 AM

to be clear, a point or question can become so misunderstood. So no, I don't think they write their own songs, and again, I never suggested that they did, nor does that have anything to do with my question.

My guess is you don't have the "talent"

May 19, 2014, 9:39 AM

And if everybody did have the talent, doesn't that suggest it would be much more difficult and require far more hard work and innovation to become famous as a rapper than as something that required a rarer talent? Obviously, if it takes no real talent to rap, then rap is more meritocratic than other music that requires more "talent."

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Let me put it this way.

May 19, 2014, 10:09 AM

It's probably on the same level of the difficulty scale as being ghey. IMO, the probabilities that I'll get involved is equal.
