Whistleblower in UNCheat fraud

Apr 21, 2014, 6:18 PM

Quit her job today.

Claims dept of African studies had students that read at an 'elementary grade level.'

Harsh.

"Elementary grade level" may be an over-exaggeration for

Why is the NCAA not involved. There has to be a reason. We should, including all conference schools, ask what's going on. Something stinks. Is money involved?

There are a lot of UNC students that can't read

A map.

JR couldn't find Gastonia from Charlotte. Stopped in Greensboro off US 220 to ask directions.

Was 3 1\2 hours late to an autograph session.

ignoance isn't an excuse

Apr 23, 2014, 8:43 PM [ in reply to "Elementary grade level" may be an over-exaggeration for ]

for being a racist.

would you have remembered and typed "J.R. Can't Reid" if he were white?

if you really knew the truth, you would know that both of J.R. Reid's parents were teachers and coaches. He was a solid student.

He and Scott Williams had higher SAT scores than Dook's Danny Ferry and C. Laettner

and if you look at the numbers and percentages, C.U. has accepted more "college level illiterate" athletes than UNC has

but like so many here, i guess you don't let the facts get in the way of your racist humor or your poorly based opinion.

no excuse.... for my horrible spelling either

'ignorance'... it should have read

here are the numbers

Apr 23, 2014, 8:49 PM [ in reply to "Elementary grade level" may be an over-exaggeration for ]

According to several academic experts, the threshold for being college literate is a score of 400 on the SAT critical reading or writing test. On the ACT, that threshold is 16.

Football

-- 34/199 scored below the threshold.

Men's basketball

-- 2/30 scored below the threshold.

Women's basketball

-- 7/26 scored below the threshold on all tests taken.

-- In total, that's 15.2%

UNC = 9.97%

Updated January 10 to include more information from Mary Willingham's research, and more response from the university.

Of 183 athletes in revenue-generating sports admitted to UNC between 2004 and 2012:

• Between 8% and 10% were reading below a third grade level.
• About 60% were reading between the fourth and eighth grade reading levels.

That's based on her review of scores on the Scholastic Abilities Test for Adults (taken after they're admitted to the university).

In addition, Willingham looked at SAT and ACT scores, and found:

• 92% scored below the low average for admissions standards at UNC
• 22% scored below a 400 on the SAT verbal test
• 37% had a 200 point gap in SAT verbal scores, compared to the average student at UNC

This is a copy and paste from the link you posted. If I were a tarhole fan, I don't think I would use that link to try to make my school look good.

of her findings found they were flawed

so if i were you, i wouldn't rely on her findings to support any claim

You get good at what you practice, so if you practice a pretend major it's no surprise you're not getting smarter, and you're going to tarnish the reputation of other tarhole grads, who did it the right way. Very sad.

Some professors are speaking up about Willingham:

They said whistle-blower Mary Willingham’s resignation last week creates a perception of retaliation among some “conscientious observers,” and recommended the university respond with an “aggressive effort to answer questions” and by promptly complying with requests from the media and others for public information.
