Another bowl prediction - Mandel/SI - no BCS for Tigers
Nov 5, 2013, 8:12 AM

All of these predictions from pro writers based on games that haven't been played are only as good as their assumptions and bias. But so many don't give Clemson a BCS slot (at-large) if FSU doesn't go to the NC game. Fingers crossed something happens and FSU ends up in Pasadena. Even if Oregon beats Stanford Thursday but it's a very close margin, there is a chance FSU keeps the #2 slot for a while longer. Oregon losing is by far the best situation for Clemson, I think. Bama losing to LSU just seems much less likely, but it too is a good thing for us.

the pick isn't an anti-Clemson agenda...

...before folks begin jumping on Mandel. You can see some thought involved in this one.
With Oregon and Bama in the title game, FSU is relegated to the Orange. They certainly don't want a Clemson rematch, so that's one bowl gone.
Rose was never in play, with OSU and Stanford most likely
That leaves Fiesta and Sugar. Sugar chooses first, but under Mandel's scenario, one of the HAS to take UCF, the other has to take Fresno State as a BCS buster. Sugar has the first choice, taking the SEC at-large (in this case Auburn) vs UCF.
That leaves the Fiesta no choice but Baylor and Fresno St.
There's just no room for Clemson in this scenario.

Exactly. Only room for 1 ACC team in non-NC bowls

No matter how highly ranked in the BCS polls. Many 'professional' sports types seem to agree on this. But a lot hinges on the non-automatic qualifying teams staying where they are. I guess UCF is the most vulnerable as they have to play another unbeaten AAC team - Houston I think. But that catapults Houston into a BCS bowl, doesn't it?

we just didn't do ourselves any favors losing the way we did to FSU. I really hope that we stay the course of last week and finish strong. We left an image burned in voters mind losing that badly though. That being said I would hope that voters would realize that we had our "bad" game for the year in that spot. Taking nothing away from FSU but they arent THAT much better. They ARE better...just not that much. We picked the wrong time to go brain dead.

While losing big to Fla State hurt Clemson in the minds of many, we would still be in this position if we had only lost by only one point. The loss means we have no chance to win the the Division, the ACC, or the NC. It ALL went away. Right now I would just like to win out. I'm not worried about what bowl we end up in.

If we lost by a point to FSU, and especially if we didn't allow Winston such a stellar day numbers-wise, I wonder if we wouldn't be swapped with Stanford. Being in the top 5 by the end of the season is a lot stronger argument for getting an at-large bid to a bowl game.
And if the AAC gets a little murkier with some within-league losses between UCF, Houston, and Louisville, that spot could go to ACC #2. I think....

You can lose to FSU because they are a very good team. You just cant lose like we did to them ESPECIALLY at home. It was just a really bad day but the timing and place was worse.

I think he has Clemson losing to USC which is the only reason Clemson gets passed over.
Think about it 3 more wins plus losses of some of the head to heads in front of Clemson puts Clemson top5 at 11-1 on Dec 1st
Anyone with Clemson in a non BCS bowl counts a loss to USC and a drop to #15 playing in Chick Fil A
Did you notice where he had USC? GAtor below Chick Fil A like 7th place SEC team. I think that means the Chick Fil A takes Clemson nobody nationally wants to see USC Clemson again in a bowl game so USC gets dropped to a lesser bowl because of Clemson...now that will get some people fired up

I'm honestly curious - I can't see any argument as to why UCF would be a better choice than us in the Sugar. The only good things are: he has us playing Ole Miss (we can beat the hell out of them and show Kimdeechee what he missed out on) and he also has the gaycocks being skipped over by the BCS.
