No, this isn't a column meant to blast Clemson for landing in the Chick-fil-a Bowl. To be honest, the poor system that the BCS and its executive committee have created actually put Clemson in one of about four truly interesting bowl games. Full Story »

too. Not only is there more than one ranking system to rile fans of any given team (#3 here and #5 there...when only the top of the BCS means anything...), but any more a team has to play awful nearly all season to not go to some Beef Jerky bowl somewhere. Avid football fans not affiliated with any pair in an bowl are bound to get tired and simply not watch the minor bowls. There are just too many.
Since the huge number of bowls survive financially but maybe on the margin, perhaps it is better to structure them as regional battles somewhat independent of all the meaningless rankings (once you get past the top 5 or 10). After all, the Chick-fil-A has been financially successful for the most part, many think just because it pits mostly Southeastern teams together. With few exceptions like Hawaii or maybe even Miami, most bowl destinations are not attractive for distant fans, winter or not. So regional scrums make more sense.
