The true measure of a program is where it finishes nationally in the polls. In 2010, Carolina finished #22 in the nation. In 2011, Carolina finished #8 in the nation. clemson has a good football program. But, so does Carolina.

Winning individual years doesn't matter in recruiting. It is the cumulative effect over time. Saying 5 of the last 7 conveniently leaves out our sub Top 50, 11th in the ACC classes of 2003 and 2004. Those players were a part of the program until 2008. Then, lets compare 2009:

South Carolina - 29 Recruits #12 in the Nation
Clemson - 12 Recruits #37 in the Nation

These are the kids that went up against each other as Juniors last year. We should not have lost to you in 2009. Since then, you have had a significant upper hand in talent. Your class average is stronger and you have signed 20 more players in that time. The gap is closing however. And we have home field advantage this year.

Jstone D329 - “ It’s ok to want a coaching change”
Brownell @Clemson: 8 seasons ranked 50th or worse by Sports Reference’s SRS
1-29: Brad Brownell road record against ranked ACC opponents
142, 161, 294, 307, 293, 166, 225, 180, 260, 164, 141, 72, 68 - assist rankings amongst all D1 programs during Brownell's tenure

Clemson had the home field advantage in 2010 also. But with the players we have returning, I like Carolina's chances in 2012.

Re: Interesting Recruiting Breakdown

I feel like the talent/depth gap between USC/Clemson created in the 2009 recruiting class really kicked in 2010. We had a ton of great senior talent in 2009 which is worth more than freshman talent. But, in 2010 you have almost no one pushing the senior talent. The 2010 freshman were almost all redshirted and the sophomores who came in 2009 were not significant enough in numbers to push the juniors and seniors. The last three years have closed the gap significantly but until we graduate this years' class, South Carolina is still ahead of us by a class year. However, if you take a 5 year average of the rivals rankings Clemson will pull ahead of Carolina for the first time in 5 years in 2012.

Games are won at the line of scrimmage. Carolina will have a huge advantage at the lines of scrimmage in 2012.

Feb 3, 2012, 10:45 AM [ in reply to Re: Interesting Recruiting Breakdown ]

I'm not sure huge is the appropriate adjective.

You are losing 2 seniors from your starting offense and 2 seniors from your starting defense. Of the 9 starting lineman you lose 4. Of the 5 remaining, 3 were true or redshirt freshman. You will only be returning 2 upperclassmen to your offensive and defensive lines combined next year. If you want to add Clowney, which I think is fair since he is a monster, only 1/3 of your line next year will be upperclassmen with starting experience.

Clemson is losing 3 seniors on offense and 3 seniors on defense. But we will be returning the exact same numbers of experienced upperclassmen on the line - 3. Clemson will be relying heavily on redshirt and true sophomores next year. To assume an advantage is a little premature. You had excellent line play in 2011 with 2 true freshman and 1 redshirt freshman in your lineup.

Re: Interesting Recruiting Breakdown

We have the edge . No doubt about that.

We have 3 starters returning on the OL. 2 of them were Freshmen All-Americans. A 3rd made the Remington Watch List. A 4th player has starting experience. In contrast, Clemson returns 2 starters, plus lost their top reserve.

On the defensive line, we return 2 starters, one who almost left early for the NFL. The other starter, made freshman All-American. A 3rd player, Clowney, made freshman All-American. You lose 3 starters, plus your top reserve.

In the past 3 recruiting classes counting the most recent, we have recruited 3 DL who were rated 4 stars or better by all 4 (247, Scout, Rivals and ESPN) recruiting services. Clemson has recruited only one DL with that distinction. On the offensive line, Carolina has recruited 4 OL who were unanimous 4 stars or better. Clemson has not recruited any.

So, Carolina has the edge... a big one, in my opinion, looking at both experience and talent. One thing is indisputable: games are won and lost at the line of scrimmage.

Re: Interesting Recruiting Breakdown

Feb 3, 2012, 2:04 PM

I can't believe I'm going to get sucked this far into it, but here we go. I don't like pure conjecture and that is what you are doing. "Huge advantage" and "big" disparity at the line is ridiculous when neither team has gone through spring training yet. As much as it pains me, South Carolina has excellent depth and as long as they are able to continue to sign roughly 125 players every 5 years to fill 85 slots then that is going to remain the case. You redshirted 21 players last year if the talk radio folks are right. You're in no danger of being bad anytime soon. But Clemson doesn't need to hang it's head about the offensive and defensive lines this year. While we're losing some veterans it was largely a rag tag bunch. But here is an honest head to head look at next years line play and my opinion of the matchup:

LT - Brandon Thomas v. Mike Matulius (slight edge Clemson)
LG - Tyler Shatley v AJ Cann (push)
C - Dalton Freeman v. TJ Johnson (edge to Clemson)
RG - unfilled v. Ronald Patrick (edge Carolina - Patrick saw limited action, Clemson will be picking from 1 of 3 3* redshirt players or a true freshman to fill this spot)
RT - Gifford Timothy v. Cody Gibson (slight edge Carolina)

DE - Malliciah Goodman v. Devin Taylor (push)
DT - unfilled v. Jerideau (edge Carolina)
DT - Deshawn Williams v. Quarles (push)
DE - Corey Crawford v. Clowney (edge Carolina)

Carolina's defense returns 46 games experience with 19 starts and 111 tackles from 2011. Clemson will return 39 games experience with 14 starts and 100 tackles. Neither includes bowl games. Again, not the dramatic difference everyone seems to think.

While I concede you go into spring training with an edge on the line it is not the monstrous gap you and even some Clemson fans seem to believe. And one injury or one breakout freshman/redshirt season could either flip the tables or put Clemson in a serious hole.

Re: Interesting Recruiting Breakdown

Feb 3, 2012, 2:36 PM

You lost me when you gave Brandon Thomas the edge over Mike Matulis. I'll just say this: I like very much the blend of experience and talent we have coming back. Our offensive line recruiting has been rated very high by both Scout and Rivals the last 3 recruiting campaigns. The blend of talent and experience we have coming back on the defensive line is indisputable (just replay the Carolina-clemson game).

When you compare experience returning on each team's defense, that's one thing. When you leave out the defensive results of Carolina's defense finishing high in the rankings whereas clemsoon's finished poorly, then the whole story is not being told.

I like the advantage we have on both lines of scrimmage. Therefore, I like our chances when we meet up again in around 10 months.
