How did CU and SCar miss on Andrew Beckwith?

Jun 25, 2016, 2:13 PM

I don't follow college baseball recruiting, but noticed that the Coastal star tearing it up in the CWS is from Blythewood, SC.

Did the Tigers and Gamecocks just blow it, or did Beckwith just want to be a Chanticleer?

I played against him in high school.

Leggett wanted to recruit guys who were all 6'2"+ and lean and that's not really what Beckwith is. He's shorter and not typical of what Leggett wanted so he didn't recruit him hard. He's a great pitcher and a warrior on the mound, he would've been nice to have this season.

Plus, he was ranked pretty high as a RHP in our class.

Don't know why SC didn't get his commitment but it wasn't like he was a no name at Blythewood. I guess it's just because he's a little unconventional.

And you know this how?

One of my former assistant coaches played for Leggett at CU.

Told us a lot of stories of what it was like to play under him. Also told us Jack wanted all his guys to look the same: long, lean and athletic. Part of this contributed to USuCk's championship runs a few years back, because he would overlook in-state talent if they didn't match what he was looking for. Beckwith is no different. I'm not sure if we or USuCk even offered him, but he definitely was good enough to play here/there and everyone in the state knew it. Monte is the opposite of Leggett too when it comes to this type of recruiting.

I'm guessing neither offered. Md 80's rhp.***

I'd imagine you're right.

Hard to judge when an ordinary looking HS player might become extraordinary.

Both teams sure could have used him though.

He was nasty in HS. One of the top 4 pitchers in the state in C/O 2013

Reagan and Widener went to USuCk and Akeem Bostic got drafted. I would put Beckwith up there behind them as far as being nasty on the mound. And I can do this because I faced them all during HS.
