this Ty Cobb stat is mind boggling

May 31, 2016, 2:53 PM

Ive always known about all the hits and RBI's, but if you've never noticed, Cobb had 11,434 career at bats, and only 357 strikeouts!!!! do you chalk it up to the era/lack of pitching, or plate discipline?

Definitely more of the era but no way around it, that's an amazing statistic.

Adam Dunn once struck out 220+ times in a season

Several things contributed to his success.

Balls were not nearly as hard, mounds were not nearly as high, fences were not nearly as far away but the main thing was that men weren't nearly as tough as Cobb. Those guys gave everything to the game.

I've read that Ted Williams would pick up a kid to shag balls and start swinging his bat three to five hours before the game just for warmup. 500 swings a day was his goal. That's all day, every day, all year.

He is still one of the most reprehensible athletes ever

There's a new book on Cobb that says all the "reprehensible" things were made up, that he was much admired, well read and no more "racist" than anyone else of the time. He did have a short fuse and would fight at the drop of a hat. (If this new book is what I've been told.)

Didn't read that article well did ya...

The article's theme was basically the author was excuse making for Cobb's actions by the old and very tired "he was a man of his time" defense.

"In several cases, Leerhsen absolves Cobb of a larger sin but leaves the underlying sin intact. In others, the biographer goes too far in sympathizing with his subject. In wrapping up the anecdote about Cobb attacking Siever, Leerhsen mentions the belated but sustained hazing the young Cobb had undergone at the hands of teammates, and writes, “At some point enough had to be enough.” But at some point did someone have to lose consciousness? Cobb may have liked children more than we’ve been led to believe, and he may have been a big reader (he tackled “Les Misérables” more than once), but he would still appear to be, in the final accounting, a jerk."

So yeah, not the best link to show that Cobb wasn't reprehensible.

tk - you have a hate streak in you that runs deep. It is always out there. You wear it on your sleeve proudly. Maybe dial it back a notch. :)
