Question for coaches from a curious fan

Apr 27, 2015, 8:20 PM

2 Things I'm curious about:
Why do they always waste a pitch when they're up on the count 0-2?
Why do they always pitch the ace Friday, the second best Saturday, and the 3rd best Sunday? In some series would it make sense to start your 3 on Friday?

When I say they, I mean everyone - not just Clemson

0-2 pitches usually require the batter to protect and chase pitches that may be off the plate. If you win the Friday game, then you do not have to win two in a row to take the series. You always want to try and start the series ahead.

Louisville has 3 great starters so it doesn't matter in that series. But, Florida State has a strong 1 and 2 and a weak 3rd starter. Why not take our chances with our 3 starter in the 1st game, and then pitch our 1 and 2 in the last 2 games?

Or maybe, our 1, then our 3, then our 2?

I guess it could make sense....either way is the right way if you win :)

a pitcher is up two strikes to no balls you think that he needs to throw a change up down the middle in hopes of getting the batter out??? NO. You hope he will chase a bad pitch that he can't hit. Starting your ace will, hopefully, give you a one up start in the series.

If you are ahead in the count 0-2, you don't want to give them a good pitch. Having said that, the pitch should be at least close enough to make the batter consider swinging. I hate to see the 0-2 pitch being two feet outside which accomplishes nothing.

Not only does it accomplish nothing if it's way off the plate, but it costs you a pitch against a limited pitch count and it puts your back to the wall if you miss with the following pitch.

Re: #1 Smart coaching staffs don't always waste a pitch on an 0-2 count. Like I mentioned in the other thread about us always wasting the 0-2 pitch it only works to waste a pitch if you occasionally throw a strike with an 0-2 count.

Re: #2 The idea behind starting the ace is to get ahead in the series.

1- Try to start the series ahead and you expect your best and second best starters to go deeper which also saves your bullpen arms if you need them to go a little longer on Sunday.
2-It is a pitchers count so you have a batter protection the plate that may chase a bad pitch. Also it can set up the 1-2 or 2-2 pitch if the batter takes. A couple high and tight pitches can set up a curve off the outside or a curve in the dirt can set up a fastball.

I was assuming you meant something totally different when you said you were a curious fan.

That certainly changes things but perhaps you should ask OP?***

That you'd always rather have doubles than home runs.

It's just a fact

I agree with the above responses. Also, you do not want to send the message to your team that you don't think you can win - beat another team's ace. Everyone knows Crownover is the ace and I am sure the team thinks they can beat anyone on any given day with him on the mound.
