Sunday sermon: The come to Jesus meeting

Sep 18, 2011, 8:47 AM

Behold, I stand at the door and knock....

There's meaning in those words for all of the Sons of Clemson this morning.

Those who doubt, those who will not believe, those who are hesitant that this is the "same old Clemson" ... behold.

Those who are weary of the wait, who hunger for that new day in Clemson football promised so many years ago ... behold.

Those who flooded the field as our coach was transfigured into a bellowing beast barely heard over your roars of triumph ... behold.

Clemson stands at the door. And for a brief moment, all who respond are welcome to join us.

We'll start with the folks who need a real come-to-Jesus meeting: the disbelievers. There are many reasons you haven't believed. But if the signs and wonders yesterday afternoon didn't convince you that there is greatness in the heart of Clemson, then you see neither with your eyes nor heart.

Dabo is just an insurance salesman! We deserve better!

This is how you see yourselves: As John the Baptist, standing tall and brave, denouncing the false King Dabo. Brave and fierce you see yourself, speaking a truth that others don't want to hear. In reality...

Hee-haw! Clemson will be 2-3! Fire Dabo!

This is how others see you. Come down off whatever cross you have placed yourself on and join the righteous Holy Army of Hartwell. Any penance you feel you must do, now is the time to do it. Do not let your pride or your own self-loathing prevent you from this day. It may never come again.

Now for the doubters: The sons of Clemson have had reason to doubt. And many, a pragmatic bunch who have had their hearts stomped before, require proof that, this time, things truly will be different. Show me the nail scars. Let's see that wound.

Blessed are those who believe without seeing...

There! Now you have seen. And I trust you will believe because you have seen. But remember that the journey as a true Son of Clemson has trials and tests. The blessings are far greater than the cost of staying behind. Cast aside doubt, step into the waters of Hartwell and arise renewed.

Now those tho rushed to embrace the triumph, flush with victory, remember this:

Bow ties and overalls together on a holy quest.

The crowd waving palms and proclaiming victory were hollering for Barabbas a few days later. The road ahead is filled with trial. Disappointment will arise and devour the hearts and hopes of those who are not prepared. It has done so before. Take stock in what you believe and prepare to follow.

But remember: If you join this journey, do not look back. There is no back. There is only forward from this point on. We have no need, and frankly no patience, for those who halt when things become difficult -- and the road WILL become difficult.

Were we not better in Egypt? Let us go back to TB...no, to Tommy West...no, to guys who coached before any of our current players were alive! Yeah, that's the ticket.

Sons of Clemson, the time is at hand. You have been born for this. There is greatness in the heart, but until you release it, greatness inside is nothing. It comes out in sweat and blood and belief. And all are needed for the days ahead.

Rise today, forgive those who doubted. Forget those who will not heed. Two fights and a ###### folks, and even woo-hooers. Those who believe, those who love Clemson, lock arms and step into the future that awaits.

As one, nothing can stop us. It is time to show the world once again what it means to be a true Son of Clemson. It's time to stop knocking on the door, Tigers. Step up and just kick the d@mn thing open.

Our future awaits. And it will be glorious.
