If it doesn't make it out of the endzone, it is a live ball and can be returned, just like a punt. The offense(kicking) team cannot return or recover it unless the defense(receiving) team touches the ball (a la Leon Lett in the snow against the dolphins)

so then couldn't we set up for a field goal on like our 20 yard line, so that we could get a longer kick out of it? Granted we risk kicking it out of the endzone and turning it over with great field position, but it seems like this is a rule that could be exploited for a longer punt.

Only problem with that is that if the team chooses not to return it, the ball is dead when the offensive team downs it, or it is blown dead (same as a punt) and then the defensive team gets to choose to take the ball where it was downed or from the point of the missed field goal (i.e. where the holder was).

well officaily any field goal that's missed and stayed in bounds can be returned, just most people aren't stupid enough to do it

Not the first fumble td in a season opener since then

Sep 3, 2006, 2:23 PM

wrong, about that, actually when we played at georgia in 2002 (not when we lost 30-0, but when we played there and barely lost) to start the season, i remeber Bryant McNeal running a fumble all the way back like 60 yards. off of a pitch. here's the clip.
