Scott Rhymer: This Clemson Fan In Need of Intrinsic Satisfaction

On March 15th, IPTAY Clemson Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs Bill D’Andrea had the unenviable task of announcing to Clemson Nation that ticket prices were going up. Full Story »

Great article, Scott...

Apr 13, 2006, 1:39 PM

People don't realize what goes on at other schools with "big time" programs. Do you have any idea what it costs to get decent seats at Ohio State for the season? Face value on the tickets alone is $65 and up. You want lower deck? Better join the "President's Club" for a MINIMUM of $2500 a year. A lower deck seat at Clemson is an absolute BARGAIN when compared with other "Big Time" programs around the country. If we want to play in their league, we have to pay the entry fee.

Good article Scott...

Now we sit back and wait for the members of the board that have some juvenile dislike of Rhymer and will tell him his article sucks and that he's an idiot just because he wrote it.

When are schools going to start to treat boosters as

Apr 13, 2006, 1:49 PM

shareholders, giving them voting rights?

At some point in the future, this is the only way to go. The money is getting too big, the people too involved, and the importance too fierce. Talk about a way to generate enourmouse amounts of money.........this is the way to do it!

Well, in a manner of speaking, the big animals already run

Apr 13, 2006, 1:56 PM

the zoo in a great deal of cases. Almost every program has large donors who have unbelievable power over large decisions at schools......ADs, coaches, facilities, etc. Obviously it would have to be some sort of shared vision program but with the right mix of actual influence shared through everyone within some sort of complex system, it could help raise a great deal of money.

Obviously you can't give complete control, especially at state-run institutions, but some shared control could be a unique idea.

We should all give at least 1% of our income over 12 months

Apr 13, 2006, 1:57 PM

Through the IPTAY autodraft. It's pretty reasonable and balanced. I mean, say your household makes $60k a year, give $600 to IPTAY at $50 / month and that's budgetable.

It's a good standard I think. If you can give more, by all means have at it, but I think that 1% baseline is a very very reasonable minimum for all of us as fans.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I liked the article. Several questions...

Apr 13, 2006, 2:05 PM

1. Should season ticket sales be limited to IPTAY members only? (I think we're already on that path). I believe yes.

2. Assuming that only IPTAY members can buy season tickets, should there be a limit on the number of tickets that each donor level can buy? By limiting the number of tickets, the supply of season tickets/seats on the open market would decrease and force more people to join IPTAY in order to buy season tickets.

3. As suggested in an above post, should IPTAY members be given a vote (weighted based on donor level) on how IPTAY rules and by-laws?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like your #1 and #2, but the point I was trying to make is

Apr 13, 2006, 2:13 PM

simply that people should give to IPTAY without wanting/demanding something in return based on the proportion that they pay.

IPTAY was not set up to be a reward system. It was set up to be a donation system that pays for scholorships.

I agree but people are not that altruistic. Charity should

Apr 13, 2006, 2:23 PM

be our primary motivation but we all want something in return. Whether you are talking about better parking or a better team, we all want something in return.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Must read

Apr 13, 2006, 2:08 PM

This is so true. We are getting killed by the competition in contributions. The list of contributions received by schools was recently printed on the board. We are way down the list. CU received approx. 9 mill in contributions in the last info submitted to the NCAA. The chickens raised 16mill, Auburn 16 mill , UGA 28 mill. UGA had a 23 Million "profit" for their athletic dept. That is a lot to use on facilities etc. They outspent us by 1 mill on coaches. Granted we are a lot smaller school than many we are competing with but we must do better. I think even Oregon State beat us. The chickens out raising us by 7 mill may catch up to us one day. Iptay used to be ahead of the coots. WE MUST do better or we will be left behind.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Excellent Article that will ring true to many many people.

Apr 13, 2006, 2:17 PM

Parts even apply to my history.

B/c Clemson is such a family experience, there is a great opportunity for IPTAY with the Next Generation. So far, IPTAY has dropped the ball in communicating with those people and speaking with them about alternatives.

IPTAY reps have not been very proactive in my experience.

I could go on for almost as long as you did. Maybe IPTAY authorities will read you article and the construcive responses.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll be honest. My parents went to USC. I'm no less

Apr 13, 2006, 8:05 PM

deserving of quality treatment and quality seats because of it. I'm willing to go the extra mile in every way for IPTAY, with my time and money. A benefit exists. I'm not asking IPTAY to make up something to give me, I don't want a trophy. Good seats are out there, nice parking is out there. All I want is an even distribution of these assets that already exist.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I gave up my season tickets years ago

Apr 13, 2006, 2:21 PM

not because of the cost, but because my two sons got older and were involved in alot of activities including sports and scouts (both achieved Eagle) among other things. I made the right decision to be with them on Saturdays instead of at football games. I am not sorry for this. I'm sure my seats were filled quickly the next year. I doubt that I will ever again have a chance to have season tickets but I believe there are others who will pay the price no matter what the cost. This is ok by me, because it's a matter of priority that others have.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great article, Scott. Like I told you in Orlando at the bar.

Apr 13, 2006, 2:23 PM

You write what I think but if I said it, it would come out completely different.

I hope this opens up some people's minds. If not, maybe the thin air in the upper deck next year will help.

In all honesty,

Apr 13, 2006, 2:25 PM

am I the only one who doesn't mind the thin air? I have upper deck seats and don't mind them at all. Sure I look forward to better ones at some point, but I'm quite happy with my tickets in TDH, Row X

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've never been up there. I can't really comment on it. If it was anything like Texas A&M, I don't want to sit up there. I hated it. I will fight to get lower tickets in for BC this September, also.

My favorite seats at Williams-Brice are in the upper deck

Apr 13, 2006, 2:42 PM [ in reply to In all honesty, ]

I love the view from up there. However, when walking by Memorial Stadium yesterday it looked like the Upper Decks are a lot steeper, does that enhance or detract the view at all? Also seems like it owuld be a little scary up there so high at the steep angle.

I know many people that do the same thing

Apr 13, 2006, 2:28 PM

They buy season tix through their grandparents. They buy 6 season tix, keep two for themselves and scalp the other 4 and actually make money over the IPTAY contribution and the season ticket cost.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Frankly, this is all I want to see out of IPTAY right now:

Apr 13, 2006, 2:41 PM

1) Go ahead and make SWEEPING changes to giving levels, seating priority, ticket prices, or whatever else AND
2) COMMUNICATE it clearly to all IPTAY members (and the rest of the fan base to the extent feasible).
3) Give people 9 months to make arrangements and decisions before the changes are effective.

The rumor of trickling changes is really HURTING NEW MEMBERSHIP and costing many at the sub $1,000 level.

I say this not to tear down IPTAY but to make it strong. I want to be part of something even more special.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree 100 %!***

I do agree with your article.

Re: Scott Rhymer: This Clemson Fan In Need of Intrinsic Satisfaction

Apr 13, 2006, 4:35 PM

Actions speak much louder than words .
I try to give to my church 'til it hurts . I try to give to Iptay in the same manner , just on a smaller scale and I figure that gives me the right to parking and tickets and nothing more .
Go Tigers !!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with the concept, but since there exists a reward,

Apr 13, 2006, 7:54 PM

it should be given on a fair basis. Giving 3 to 4 times the amount of money other people are giving, sacrificing far more than they are, and being treated as a second hand citizen is getting old. You appeal is duly noted, and on many grounds is correct. But a reward does exist, so distribute it fairly. Reseat the place in a fair way, and let the pieces fall where they should.

Re: Scott Rhymer: This Clemson Fan In Need of Intrinsic Satisfaction

I have some wonderful ocean front property in Arizona with great intrinsic value I'm willing to sell to you and your Socialists left wing thinking friends for not much more than twice the appraised value. Of course the deal will be kept confidential because I would hate for your boss to find out he had hired an employee with an approach to thinking that there is something wrong with him expecting a resonable return of his investment in you.
There is nothing wrong with Clemson fans willing to invest heavily into athletic endeavors to expect a resonable return on their investment. For the last few years, that return has not been a very good one from the standpoint of the bottom line, ie; wins and losses, thus slow revenue collection on projects like WEZ. Feed the dog some meat occasionally with that dried out soup bone.

If you want to give your money away with no strings attached, the doors of the church are open every Sunday and they pass around the collection plate freely without holding a gun to your head

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

great...more guilt trip bull crap.

Apr 14, 2006, 11:41 AM

of course people should DONATE without expectation of reward, but...do the people that give thousands of dollars a year expect to be rewarded for doing so (YES)...i've never once complained about ticket prices or membership dues, but i don't understand why one should feel GUILTY for paying the minimum...the parade of athletic department officials (and any one else associated with the university that has any sort of platform) telling me that i need to pay more money or i'm somehow taking advantage of the university that i love is getting really old...the fact that most supporters only have to give the minimum says something positive about our clemson "culture"...the fact that IPTAY historically has taken seriously the requests and complaints of those that pay the minimum says something positive about our "culture"...blowing smoke up people's butts to justify changing that "culture" represents a negative change.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think you missed the point...

Apr 15, 2006, 1:56 PM

It's certainly okay to give the minimum, just don't expect a lot in return.
