Drad you own next years season. Every loss is on your head. You better make it a cupcake out of conference schedule so Shyatt 2 can get some wins. Every loss will be magnified next year. We know Brownell can't win in the ACC. Your best hope is that the football team makes the playoffs again and go into January contending for the national title. That will draw our attention. Recruiting goes until February. By that time basketball will be irrelevant as usual.

After the events that transpired last night I thought he was definitely gone. I thought that would be the push that was needed along with another disappointed season.

I will continue to support our players and team but this embarrassing to say the least. This almost ensures that Brownell will be here till 2020. Sad day for Clemson basketball.

I second that. Remember 1997 FB? West's most talented team. Could not win big close games, lost games they should not have, but beat USuCk. Sound familiar? 1998 VA Tech game ripped off the veil and it was ugly. Last fan in LJ next year please turn off the lights.

I was thinking more of Jack Leggett being the most recent mistake that DRad has made bc of the lacking of solid leadership!!! Making the same mistake back to back isn't a good quality or the best trait for an Athletic Director!!!

Mar 20, 2017, 2:02 PM [ in reply to Won't Spend a Dime... ]

There will be many more next season boycotting the season, and the revenue from FB will have to foot the expenses for basketball. DRad should have know better bc of the needed income for the BB program after spending all the money that was spent renovating Littlejohn. Not a very smart move DRad, when fans stop spending their hard earned money to see what was already a failing program in a bad economy makes their choice much easier to make. DRad, most ticket buying fans don't live on the same salary that you bring into your home. While your wife can run around during the day spending money, most fans wives has to work so that they can buy a ticket to the game. I bet that you will learn this time from the same mistake you had made before with Jack, this time with Brownell. You are soft, and hopefully this bad decision will toughen you up!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ok, Now the plan. (Long)

Mar 20, 2017, 9:42 AM

Ok, so you have to have a plan going forward with Brownell as coach. This is reality. Find a way to make it work.
1. Everybody get on the same page, do your best to make this work or get out of the way.
2. If no progress of any sort next season, then we look elsewhere. No questions asked.
3. No more negativity from the staff, the players, the fans or the janitors or the ball boys. All in or all out, now. Show some enthusiasm. Quit talking about how hard this is and talk about how hard we are going to work as a team, as coaches and as an fans and as an administration that is serious about seeing basketball succeed.
4. Retain a mental/psychology coach to get this team toughened up. The rowing and all that stuff they did last year is a start. But more is needed. And it has to start with Brad. Loosen up a bit, get some help with that. Ditch the suit and put on golf shirts, try something different because what you have tried has not worked well enough. The team appears to be just too tight in crunch time. Brad needs to smile more and get his attitude better or at least make it look like he is in a good attitude.
5. Get outside help with a shooting coach if you can get one. If you need to change assistants to get guys who can get players to perform better, do it.
6. Brad, get teed up a few times next year!!
7. DRad, make it better for the fans. Again, try the general admission method for seating to get more people (students and others) closer to the court who want to make noise! Crank up the fan experience a notch. I took my kids to 6 games this year and it was close to dead most of the time. Maybe just a little boost there would have helped win a game or 2 this year.

This may well be Brad's last stand. I hope not as I think he is a good guy with some basketball knowledge. If no improvement next year then we have to make a move to someone who has done it at some other place at the level we want to be at, not a "mid-major" where the pressures are just less.

Re: Every thing you said is acceptable...

Mar 20, 2017, 4:00 PM

My point is this is reality. We can help and support and be bad fans and hope he fails. I for one hope he succeeds. But this is the last chance, period. We have more 2 proven players coming back for the first time in a long time and a new arena to recruit to. I think it is 50-50 it works. But hey what is 1 year in our 100 of futility?

So mediocrity and close losses are the standard. Except when we play the #7 seed in our bracket in the NIT. Then we can forget about close losses.

After 6 years not even sniffing the NCAAT, somehow BB is going to make changes to magically improve our program. If he can do that, then why hasn't he already done it. And what you on earth makes Drad think 7 years of history will reverse themselves.

GT, NC State, Va Tech, Virginia have all made moves to improve. But somehow we don't need to do that. All we're doing is putting off the inevitable and making any path to success longer.

Don't give us any more BS about wanting a winning basketball program. You have no credibility.

Re: New Story: The Brad Brownell era will continue at Clemson

Mar 20, 2017, 12:58 PM

Why was this huge buyout justified when the contract was drawn up. There was no evidence of improvement. A huge buyout was not earned or deserved.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

D-Rad granted a foolish buyout w/ OPM. Now Clemson suffers.

Mar 20, 2017, 1:06 PM

D-Rad negotiated a bad contract with Brownell at a time when Brownell hadn't proven squat and wasn't likely to get better offers. If D-Rad hadn't done such a crappy job negotiating Brownell's contract (including granting a huge buyout), the decision today would be easy-- dump Brownell.

If D-Rad had been using his own family's money, I'll bet he would have negotiated a better, more prudent deal with performance-based escape clauses. But hey, it's OPM. Sling it around.

I imagine the situation will worsen because I don't see any good players coming to Clemson, knowing that Brownell has failed and is 1-2 seasons from being fired (thanks only to a stupid buyout) and Clemson is likely to be mediocre, at best.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It wasn't about the buyout.

Mar 20, 2017, 2:38 PM

Clemson can afford it and was willing to pay it.

The problem is that Clemson is unwilling to commit to basketball success (i.e., pay a good salary to obtain a quality coach and keep him happy). We expect our basketball coaches to be miracle workers and seem surprised when they aren't. Or, in the rare chance that they are, we can't believe it when they leave us.

We use all kinds of reasons to justify this, from "we're a football school," to "we're located in a rural area," to "the ACC is a tough conference." This is a loser mentality, when the REAL reason why we can't succeed in basketball is because we are too cheap to get a great coach and too unwilling to give him what he needs (staff salaries, facilities, administrative support, etc.). Until we do, we will continue in the same pathetic fashion we always have.

Mar 20, 2017, 2:49 PM

JUDGE, THAT MAKES ZERO SENSE. YOU ARE SAYING THAT WE WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM PAYING A 3.5 MILLION DOLLAR BUYOUT BUT WE WOULD HAVE A PROBLEM GIVING A NEW COACH A DECENT SALARY. PLEASE TELL ME HOW THAT MAKES SENSE. DRAD HAS SHOWN THAT HE DOES NOT MIND SPENDING MONEY IE, LITTLEJOHN AND FOOTBALL FACILITIES. EVERYTHING I HAVE HEARD ABOUT THE GUY IS THAT HE IS VERY SERIOUS ABOUT BASKETBALL AND WANTS US TO BE GOOD. HE DID NOT MAKE THE DECISION THAT I WOULD HAVE LIKED BUT I WOULD BET A LOT THAT MONEY WAS NOT THE REASON. BRAD WILL BE BACK, THEREFORE I WILL SUPPORT HIM. HOPEFULLY DRAD MADE THE CORRECT DECISION. WE WILL KNOW IN LESS THAN A YEAR.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think you aren't understanding what he said — he's saying

Mar 20, 2017, 4:01 PM

Clemson has the money but is choosing not to allocate it to basketball….the administration CAN buy him out easily and pay well for new coaching staff, but doesn't desire to. We're cheap when it comes to basketball. Which I agree with.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: New Story: The Brad Brownell era will continue at Clemson

Mar 20, 2017, 1:09 PM

It would seem that past mistakes would help prevent future mistakes. Jack Leggett, and DRad learned nothing from it. Maybe our AD should be replaced also. It's hard to have faith in someone that makes the same mistake back to back, only proves that learning from your mistakes isn't a plus for DRad!!!

the buyout drops $500K for next year? what are we waiting for? i want Brownell to succeed at Clemson to, but he's had years and has not succeeded. we're not afraid to drop several million on football, but can't fork out $3.5m to buyout Brownell? were the lack of direction late in games not enough for DRad? was the choke job at home in the NIT not enough for DRad? DRad's going to let us hit rock bottom then get rid of Brownell, just like he let Leggett hang on too long.

can we get rid of DRad?

I hate being wrong about somebody, and I backed Brad all the way until the 6 straight losses from 1/3 to 1/22. That is when I knew that I was done with Brad, and I didn't intend to back him another game or another season. Stick a fork in bc I'm completely done when it comes to standing up for Brad Brownell. DRad could give him another 3 years and make an even 10 years, and he won't get any better recruits than he does now. Blue chip type players isn't in his future at Clemson. Funny thing is, the players he will depend on next season.
He didn't regulate their playing time correctly this yr.
Hey Dan...get ready.

Dan don't ask the fans to be quiet and support this team if they start losing next year. Brownell will take heat and so will you.

Whaaa?? Please retract this story.

Seriously though, the state of our roundball program isn't funny.

The ONLY thing i can hope is that the restructuring comes with a 1 year extension with SIGNIFICANTLY lower buyout terms.

IMO, DRad's credibility was lost with me the very second he decided to bring Brad back for another wasted season. By him making that same mistake with Jack tells me that his knowledge of coaches is one of his weakest points!!!

Look at the bright side. The football team is loaded and talented. We find the right qb and we are back in the playoffs. After that recruiting is front and center till February followed by junior days in February. Just ignore the basketball team because by that time we will be last in the ACC again. Be happy for football and baseball.

Era? Don't you mean error?

Nice guy; not a winner

This was a nice try but it's looking like Tommy Bowden era when we held on too long. This is why I don't follow clemson basketball. Should've saved the money on the renovation and bought 5 players to win some games.

Keep coach B for another year will put the basketball team behind for up to three years.I like coach and have supported him until the N.I.T. The team and him appeared to give up. We must start over. This is year seven and it feels like we are another step behind.

FINANCIAL Decison

Yankee Dan made the calculated decision that TENS OF THOUSANDS lost in season ticket renewals (with poor seating choices for even high level IPTAY donors) in a MARGINALLY improved Littlejohn, would be cheaper than paying out the ill advised Brownell contract extension. CU in 2019 (maybe)!
