I don't care who you are...

Aug 27, 2016, 11:00 AM

If this was my team, you'd never wear my uniform again. And it wasn't even his first time doing it.

Aug 28, 2016, 8:28 AM [ in reply to Re: What a disgrace ]

I don't see the necessity to link football and jingoistic support for military, nationalism, etc.

It is pretty hypocritical for college/nfl football fans attending games, who by and large are far whiter and wealthier than the average American, to criticize a black player who most likely didn't grow up with the advantages of the 80,000 people sitting in the stands for having a different perspective when it comes to politics.

If "love it or leave it" is the end of your thought process, maybe you ought to do a little more reading and thinking.

Deshaun Watson could wipe his butt with little American flags every day and I'd still want him to win the Heisman and lead us to the playoffs again.

Stand up and show some appreciation for the blessings that this nation has given you and the men that died to make it possible. Anything less than that shows exactly how ignorant, classless and selfish your rotten soul is.

Re: This is about more than football

Aug 28, 2016, 10:37 AM

No, it isn't about more than football. If you want to celebrate our military's accomplishments, then go to an air show or a parade or a museum or a battlefield park.

I go to a football game to watch football and have a good time. The 84,000 people in Death Valley have Clemson football in common. We do not all have our politics in common. Nor do we all have love of the military in common. Believe it or not, we could have a perfectly good football game without a national anthem, flags, prayers, color guards, and jet flybys.

It isn't America's military victories that have made it a great nation. Have our military failures in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Nicaragua, Cuba, Korea, Canada, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, and Somalia made us a sorry nation?

I'd also argue that our two vast oceans and our two peaceful, weak neighbors have also had a lot to do with preserving our nations's freedoms (this despite us having invaded and conquered/attempted to conquer said peaceful, weak neighbors). Why don't we have Vast Oceanic Barriers plus Canada and Mexico Suck at War Appreciation Day along with Military Appreciation Day?

Re: This is about more than football

Aug 28, 2016, 1:41 PM

The games would not be the same without the Anthem being played, the flag saluted, the prayers etc. The Anthem reminds us we are all Americans and the Prayer humbly reminds us we are all Gods children. Without that we are enimies and would act like heathens. We differ ideologically that's for sure, your side of America sees no merit to values and I place a great emphasis on them. Without values we are lost.

Mindless patriotism. The greatness of America is it's people, not it's institutions.

Freedom to speak or not to speak is still freedom. The problem with mindless patriotism is that it blemishes the very freedoms that it claims to honor.

The idea that our country is better than all other countries is propaganda.

There is a difference between loving the American people and being a sheep.

Aug 27, 2016, 3:46 PM

coming from... there is great irony in your words as well. You seem to be saying that he is free to speak his mind and express his opinion... no matter how controversial...in a very public way, for millions of people to see... but we all need to just shut up, and not express our opinion that we strongly disagree with him.

Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.

I've used this example many times on the topic of "free speech". Yes, you are absolutely free to get up in a company meeting and tell a racist joke or comment on how blazing hot the new receptionist is. Yes, you have that right. No one will try to stop you, and you won't be thrown in jail. You do have that freedom.

But you will also lose your job before the day is done. Not because your "right to free speech" was violated, but because you are not protected from the fallout. So, always speak wisely, and consider both the audience and the ramifications of your "free speech". This really isn't rocket surgery, seems like common sense.

This society isn't paying him ####. Try to see the big picture. Our people didn't fight and die for a free county only to have that very freedom denied to those who don't agree with your idea of patriotism. People like you shame America.

Aug 27, 2016, 3:20 PM

He is a dynamic athlete, but a complete joke of a player and an even bigger joke of a person and makes way too much money to be a washed up backup QB. I firmly believe he doesn't have any problems with being oppressed and race issues and that he's only doing this to draw attention to himself because he's basically done as a player and he wants the spotlight! He is biracial, was raised by white parents and has white siblings. But now all of a sudden he's being oppressed and hates his countrys flag and national anthem! Please save the 49ers a lot of money and just leave the Good Ole USA since you have it so bad here!!! GOD Bless Clemson, GOD Bless the USA and GOD Bless us all!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Give me a break Kap! You should be cut immediately!!

Aug 27, 2016, 3:33 PM

I disagree that he should be cut...but considering that the NFL is a fan-driven game, and he did just make himself radioactive to a bunch of fans with this move, it wasn't a smart decision.

Go ahead, Colin. Take an adversarial stand that alienates most of the people who pay big bucks for your salary. The working-class joes propping you up are really going to be sympathetic to the notion that a kinda-black dude (he's what, 25% black or some such...whatever, he's a lot whiter than he is black) who was raised by white parents and earns $19 million a year feels racially oppressed. To the point that he hates America.

Okay, Colin. Not feeling loved? Not feeling like the fans are embracing you?

Shocker.

But yes, Colin lives in a free country. He should not be fired. He should not be jailed. He should not be subjected to legal or government-initiated harassment. And he has every right to walk down the street without fear of his life or safety.

On the other hand, because it's a free country, the fans are free to hate him too...and it is going to be very hard to win the fan base when at least half of them are lustily raining down boos every snap, which is what's about to happen.

The 49ers brass and locker room has to be doing a collective facepalm here. Some guys are just dumb.
