Never quite understood the animosity some people had towards Leggett, considering how successful the baseball team was under his management. But I also didn't really like the way the team has looked over the past few years, and didn't see any improvement this year.
A lot of the complaints I've heard about Leggett seemed to amount to something like this: "That yankee sonovabitch didn't recruit my cousin's friend from SC, but he took one of those inferior players from up north. Also, he didn't call some random play that he had almost no control over the way I thought it should've been called after I had the benefit of hindsight, so he's an idiot. And even though he had tons of success at Clemson, I don't want any of his former assistants to replace him because they'd remind me of him."

I don't follow baseball very religiously, but I do know we hadn't seen any improvement since I began at Clemson. That just simply cannot fly.
I'll be saying the same thing about Brownell if we don't see some improvements the next couple of years.

Brownell should have never been given an extension.

I figure he is simply being kept around until the new facilities are ready. Probably knew they couldn't get a decent coach on promises alone.
As for Jack, well he was in the catbird seat in Omaha, and got his teeth kicked in by the coots. Then couldn't beat them. That will get you turned on quickly.

Agree with you about what started the bad feelings with Jack. USC's rise in baseball paired with Clemson's downward trend led most to jump off the Jack wagon.

done that suggested he deserved an extension? Remember, he didn't even make the dance with an NBA draft pick on the team.

KJ can't win games by himself.

So having that NBA draft pick means little when the rest of the team is still so young or inexperienced to contribute. And while it's impossible to predict, if KJ was on this past year's team I'd argue we would have been in the tournament. Regardless...
The extension is a gamble and we can argue the the dangers of such high buyouts based on mediocre success (I tend to agree) but as a coach, I think Brownell is good one and will be a good one for Clemson. It's taking him longer than many of us had hoped, but my argument is that it is mostly because of a delay in recruiting, coaches leaving, and some bad luck with the recruits we did sign. Both are starting to turn around and we are signing better talent. Good coach + good talent= success. Simple formula. That's why I'm a supporter of Brownell.
The argument for or against Brownell has been had on here so many times but at the end of the day he probably has the next two years to get us back to the tournament. If he doesn't he will either be fired or be on a very hot seat. (firing will cost us about $3.5 million plus whatever we pay new coach)

There was really only one way to improve from where we were
Jun 15, 2015, 12:52 PM
[ in reply to I just don't think he was willing to make any changes ] |

and that would've been to win more conference championships and to win an NCAA tournament. There was a long way to go down from where we were, and I think a lot of our fans were spoiled by how much success Leggett actually had. I just hope we don't have to see what mediocrity's really like before we really appreciate the job Leggett did.

time for a change of some sort. Never seemed to recover after losing to the coots like that. To go from always in the conversation to host supers to not getting destroyed at home in the regionals to being one of the last teams in, with no up tick along the way shows it was time.
