If this is how it goes ...

Then it will prove that there are also programs that are 'to big to fail.'
How very disappointing that would be.

I disagree....somewhat.....though it'll be next spring

before any of us find out for sure.
This article reads like it was researched, proofed and published by one of the thousands of unc apologists who have closed ranks (and minds) on Inside Carolina still preaching the sermon that: "nothings going to happen, everybody does it, corrections have already been made."
My disagreement lies in 4 rather innocuous words that in and of themselves wouldn't mean much--until issued by the NCAA....."Lack of Institutional Control". These are daggers through the heart of every compliance department in every athletic department across the country.
While unc may avoid the calls of many outsiders for the "death penalty", I doubt the punishment will be that severe--though strong arguments can be made for shutting down all offending unc sports (football, mbasketball, wbasketball, wsoccer, baseball) for a period of time.....The administration at unc didn't just sit back and ignore what was going on....they actively participated in the fraud. A former unc chancellor left, as did a former athletic director, department heads, even a former president of the unc faculty senate. And the dept within unc's ath. dept that deals with tutoring services, academic affairs, etc, has gone through some major personnel changes, but, IMO, should be disbanded and something else (not the cheating entity it became) put in its place.
I seriously doubt the mens basketball program will be crippled, but I think schollie reductions and decreased recruiting visits are definitely in their future. The NCAA will publicly wag its finger at Roy Williams...nothing more. Not sure how many (if any) games and titles will be forfeited, but that possibility certainly exists.
Women's basketball is going to bear the brunt of the NCAA's ire. To avoid a death penalty to this sport, I think Sylvia Hatchell and everyone connected to that program will be forced to "resign". The NCAA report makes particular note of the sins committed by the distaff hoopsters and there'll be a price to be paid.
The other sports involved will be penalized but definitely not as strongly as wbasketball.
That unc is being treated as a repeat offender, that they've been accused of the most heinous offense--LOIC, and that this has been the biggest, most egregious athletic/academic fraud scandal in the history of the NCAA will earn them some serious penalties, but probably not as serious as they need to be. Plus, unc will, for the rest of all our lives, carry the ignominious yoke of what they've done around their necks......and SACS (the scholastic accreditation group) STILL has not ruled on this unc mess---that will be equally as interesting as any hammers dropped from Indy.

i could nit-pick a few of your factual assertions, but your over-all assessment is spot on
and as i've said before:
i'm sure most here will think the penalties aren't nearly severe enough
and TarHeel Nation will think they're way too harsh
the LOIC paints a broad brush and give the NCAA a lot of options for punishments

I think the writer is correct except that the biggest reason is what haynous said. UNC is considered too prestigious to fail. Its a shame because despite that alot of phaggs say "everyone is doing it" no one else has ever had the audacity to do it to this level of sophistication and saturation that UNC has. There's nothing left to prevent any institution from doing this same shatt and UNC doesn't even care how they've tarnished college athletics. They only want it to just go away without them suffering any consequences. Shameful and disgusting!!!

As much as I hoped they would get punished horribly, I really never thought they would. Were it Clemson, would the results have been the same? I doubt it, but that's just speculation like so much of what has been said to date about this scandal. The fact that they drug their feet so much should bring about ire and retribution by the NCAA, but hide and watch. In the end it will be just a little slap on the wrist and then back to business as usual in Chapel Hill.

Said it before that Swofford would buy them out of it. The other schools that have been put on probation should sue the NCAA if UNC receives no punishment. This just makes me hate them more.

this. That list of allegations is not what you send if you're planning on sweeping stuff under the rug. They could easily get the death penalty. At best, I'm guessing they'll have to forfeit every title they've won over at least the last 15 years, with a massive financial penalty.

UNC will get punished.
i don't think wins (or titles) will be vacated
but the NCAA will punish the school, there's no doubt.
we won't know what the penalties will be until sometime next January - March
of course most here will surely think the punishment much too lenient...
and many TarHeel faithful will think it's much too harsh

you already think you know better than the folks who run the ACC schools... so i guess it's only natural that you have a better perspective than the NCAA enforcement folks?

have you read the NOA?

there was a wide variety in the treatment of students and athletes, and the effort they put into the classes under Crowder's aegis - some were truly shams, some weren't. some students/athletes actually did legitimate work. some didn't
so, no i won't agree with you.
but you seem to know more about the situation than the NCAA enforcement folk do...
so when you get to rule on athlete eligibility, let me know
