Just because they are co-coordinators doesn't mean that Scott isn't the head guy, of course doesn't mean that Elliot isn't either but one of them is the head guy, I do not believe that Dabo would do that unless he didn't think it was the best move.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Smart move by Dabo

Dec 2, 2014, 4:07 PM

I would assume Elliot would coordinate the run game, and Scott the passing game. They've got one game to prove themselves. If they don't cut it, you hire someone from the outside. Smart.

So far Dabo being named head coach is the best thing to happen at Clemson since Danny Ford. His hiring of Chad Morris and Brent Venables were prefect. Look at the wins and the great recruiting that's happened in the past few years. Jeff and Tony have been a big part of all of these things and personally Dabo is a genius. I can't imagine any one questioning the reasoning in his decision for them to co-coach the offense. It's by far the least disruptive thing for the Tigers and the players and recruits already know them, and trust them. Great choice and if not,Dabo will fix it.

Doesn't really matter how you feel about it! The decision has been made and I think it's great!

One item of note: both of these gentlemen are CLEMSON men, who are ALL IN!!

While bringing in a high profile "hired gun" from outside The program seems nice and all, there is no GUARENTEE that they would be successful or more importantly ALL IN!

These two will serve us very very well in their new roles and recruiting will be off the chain moving forward!

Go Tigers!!!!

After rethinking this decision, I am more happy about it. It is a nice reward for both guys, and it solidifies our staff. I don't see the other coaches bolting, unless Venables gets some major offers, and he very well might. I am just glad to have coaches other programs would want. There have been times when that wasn't the case, and we suffered because of it.

Heard! We bring Dabo up from within

Dec 3, 2014, 4:16 AM [ in reply to Re: i don't know how I feel about this*** ]

and have the opportunity to have 4 consecutive 10+ win seasons.

He brought in CBV from Oklahoma. He CBV coached in some huge games for Oklahoma. Now, WE legitimately have the #1 D in the nation this year (at least top 5 for anyone who wants to argue that fact).

He hires CCM. A guy one year removed from coaching Friday night games, and in 4 years, he is now head coach at SMU.

I think we can all agree, given his recent record, he knows how to pick coaches, and is an unbelievable recruiter. Add Elliot and Scott to the mix a little more, and recruiting is a wrap! Kids want to play for these guys.

Only one way to find out, but Dabo has earned the right to do as he sees fit IMO.

At first neither did I. I guess I finally came to terms with it this morning, after several reports stated that it was a distinct possibility. As I thought about it though, I got more comfortable with the idea. I mean these guys aren't just some yahoo's off of the street, they are Tigers, they "bleed orange." Former graduates, great recruiters, that have had four years of learning under a really good OC, and have a great track record of coaching players that will work their tail off to earn it. I think Clemson could do a good deal worse than these two. Time will tell.

Huge mistake! As a former CEO it has been my experience when someone (1) is not responsible, no ONE is responsible. CO-Anything just doesn't work, plus the fact that they will be co-controlling an offense that has slowed down and is no longer thinking about running 90 offensive plays per game! Too many "bubble screens" were used rather than throwing it over the top. Maybe that's unfair since they had Stoudt who couldn't make the throws. Dabo just missed a chance to insert new thinking and new ideas into his offense. Maybe it's back to play great defense and run the ball hard!

You were right when you said Stoudt. The screens were called because Stoudt can't read cover defense. Watson will be Scotts key to getting a future HC job offer. All he has to do is tell Watson to get a first down.

Dec 2, 2014, 7:27 PM [ in reply to Re: i don't know how I feel about this*** ]

A corporation is not a team sport.
As a current CEO of a corporation, I can assure you equal co-team members do work as long as: A) There is someone with oversight available to override tie breakers and provide clear direction for the team. B) The right team members are put together. Generally if you have a hands off approach to your team members they will excel.
In Jeff and Tony's case they will be able to make objections on a particular crucial call without hesitation.
I am quite sure they have a plan worked out as to who, how and when plays are called. There may be a few hiccups along the way and yes a little risk, but this could work quite well.

Dec 2, 2014, 6:19 PM [ in reply to i don't know how I feel about this*** ]

Me either. Dabo must have feared that Elliot would bolt for SMU with Morris if he didn't do something. I do agree that both are excellent coaches with bright futures, but I guess I just figured Scott had earned the job a little more with his recruiting successes. Still, I'm happy we are keeping both and that they both are being rewarded for their performance.

Its not that uncommon, a lot of teams have co-coordinators. It doesn't mean they do the exact same thing and fight over the plays they want to call, that would be insane. One will likely be designated as the play caller on gameday.

Dec 3, 2014, 1:08 AM [ in reply to So then is there any truth to the rumor Scott was calling ]

I have no idea but, I have commented a few times that Saturday was the best called game that Morris has call the whole season. If Jeff was calling them, that surly would explain why I thought it was the best game CM had called all season. I thought that the calls were mixed in so well that Spurrier never could catch onto the rhythm of the play calling that he and other decent coaches has pegged CM on. If it was Jeff calling the plays, he done a h&ll of a job keeping Spurrier confused.

Elliot was a team captain while at Clemson... he has the leadership qualities needed. He is also smart!
Both have been learning this offense for 4 years... the most important thing here is to keep the same offense for the next 2 years or 3 as long as Watson is at Clemson.. if you have to change it afterwards do so but Chad Morris offense was made for a QB like Watson....

You're not the only one, its mind boggling to me also. And I can't wrap my head around that either unless, it got back to Dabo that Morris were talking to coach about going with him. As we all know now, this job move with Morris has been going on for two weeks or more. Most likely since June Jones walk away from SMU. CM has been making contact ever since I'm thinking.

Nobody but you thinks Clemson is a laughing stock. In an earlier post you suggested that Clemson is a top level program and could therefore get a top-level OC. Now you're saying Clemson is a laughing stock. How can it be both? Surely you have a dizzying intellect.

Dec 2, 2014, 5:00 PM [ in reply to Dumbest. Move. Ever. ]

Retaining both these guys is important and making them happy certainly helps solidify our great recruiting class.

Somewhere down the line, one or the other (or perhaps neither) will probably get the job.

But right now, this move is one that makes sense. Both guys get a raise and stay with Clemson.

Maybe one or the other proves himself worthy and gets the job, or maybe they both end up working for the guy who eventually gets hired.

Re: Dumbest. Move. Ever.

Dec 2, 2014, 5:18 PM [ in reply to Dumbest. Move. Ever. ]

Lets see....

Will Muschamp worked out well in Florida, the combination of Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier help South Carolina win two national championships and Lane Kiffin took Tennessee to the SEC championship in his ONE year.....

My point in mentioning those fallacies is that a name really means nothing. People called Clemson stupid for hiring this WR coach by the name of Dabo Swinney as the interim and then the Head Coach. Then they said it was dumb that he hired this "feathered upstart" Chad Morris who was only successful one year at something called Tulsa and brought with him his high school offense that he won state championships with in Texas. Then, in the worse move of all, he hired a "wash-up" D-Coodinator from Oklahoma after getting rid of a washed-up D-Coordinator from Alabama.

I don't know if you have noticed but all of those moves have worked out pretty well for the school, the fan base, and the conference. Just some prospective from the laughing stock that is Clemson.

Not saying you don't have the right to question things you don't like but quit acting like this is the end all be all and Dabo knows nothing because you're the only one that looks like the idiot at least let it play out then if it doesn't work you have a base for your argument but until then you look like a Gamecock hating on anything Clemson.....

Dec 2, 2014, 4:00 PM

Look, I like Jeff Scott and Tony Elliot... a lot. They're great recruiters. Maybe they will turn out to be a fantastic OC one day... but they both have zero experience. We're operating from a position monetarily where we could have hired nearly any OC in the country and instead we hire two guys who aren't qualified. Clemson is a top 25-15 program in the country. This isn't a "learn on the job" type of place.

In reality this means Dabo is calling plays, and we've seen how that went before.

To all of the people suggesting we had to do this to keep our best recruiters, I say hogwash. If they succeed here as OC... they will leave. If they fail... they will be fired. When you have success, all of your people will leave for better positions. It's part of life. You can't make major decisions like this out of fear of something like that.

Dec 2, 2014, 9:06 PM [ in reply to Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo ]

If it fails he can bring in another OC, another assistant could "retire" and keep both Jeff and Tony. I think this is brilliant. Dabo knows if he puts Jeff in alone and it fails, he will have to fire him. This way he can spread the blame if it fails and hang onto him.

If it works, Jeff and Tony benefit.

They don't have zero experience. Scott has been with Clemson longer than Chad Morris. Zero experience would be if oneveryone of us on this thread was hired, which would be terrible. They just haven't had a chance at the new position. Every coach in the NFL, or, college for that matter has been through this process. Relax. Let's see how it pans out.

Deja vu. I remember Tnet when Clemson named Dabo as head coach; and when Morris (high school coach with little college experience). I believe this exact statement was made, over and over. Time will tell, but so far Dabo has made a terrific impact on our program and has made great decisions, both OC and DC gone (Spence, Koenning) - Dabos call .

Dabo hired Napier & Steele, led us to 6-7 during HC training

Dec 2, 2014, 5:05 PM

Dabo under-performed his player talent in his early on-the-job training years, taking multiple losses to teams with inferior player-talent, including losing the ACC to GT, and going 6-7 with a team full of future NFLers. Imagine what would have happened if Clemson had hired a great head coach instead of letting Dabo learn how to be a head coach through on-the-job training.

Let's support the coaching staff... they get paid a lot of money to do their jobs, and let's not forget that in the last 4 years, they have won 41 games!

Either 2 things can happen: We get 2 amazing coordinators at a great price who will do amazing things for our offense or it turns out to be a dud in which Dabo will either have to correct by hiring from the outside, or it will cost him his job. I trust Dabo and he has had to fire coordinators in the past if they were not working out. Clemson gave him a golden opportunity so he is loyal to the school. Jeff and Tony are both alumni who now have a chance to lead their alumni to the next level. ALL IN baby!!!
As for Morris, I wish the guy the very best, but couldn't help but think he was trying to move on to bigger and better things because after his 1st year, he was looking. I also questioned the play calling this year. He was first innovated, but this year, his play calling decisions were questioned a lot! I think it is a win win situation with him leaving us when he did. His best decision? Probably not, but after this year, I believe he needed to go. And besides, next year will be a better year, no Stoudt (I mean doubt)!

This is not a problem at all, makes perfect sense

Dec 2, 2014, 5:01 PM

look at it this way:

The playbook is already in hand and they've both been around 4 years so they know it. The players already know it. All they need to do is agree who is going to take the lead on playcalling during each game.

Deshaun and the skill guys could make anybody look good running this offense. 9 out of 10 times it ain't the plays or the play calls that decide a game, it's the execution, ie; the accuracy of the pass and/or the proper blocking assignments all attended to and done right.

We're going to put up tons of points and one of the two is going to get offered an OC job at another school and we'll be all set. All we need peace and harmony on offense, this is fine.

And if perhaps between the two of them they can minimize the unnecessary risk of running our still undersized QB too often and taking shotgun QB sneaks from the 1 yard line, we will probably be A-OK. Oh, and cut down on the dang gimmickry and trickeration. And we need a bigger O-Line.

Go Tigers

Re: This is not a problem at all, makes perfect sense

Dec 2, 2014, 10:24 PM

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I don't think CM was "feeling" and "knowing" the right call in every given situation. IMHO, as good as CM was as an OC, he didn't seem to be able to make the "big calls" in the "big games" with any level of consistency. Take a look at the "big" opportunities this year and honestly evaluate whether CM made the right calls. I'm not being critical-- just realistic. I would also point out that all of us "Monday morning quarterbacks" have the benefit of 20:20 hindsight.

Again, let's get behind the coaches as long as they're coaching our Tigers... when they leave Clemson, well, that's another story all together.

Go Tigers!

This is an Audition

Dec 2, 2014, 9:45 AM

If this is a shock for you, raise your hand? Okay this is an audition. And it will happen during "Bowl Season." I bet you Swinney picks one by March. Whichever one he decides, he will look to fill the skill position of the winner. Like the idea. I mean if one of them can find a way to take down the #1 defense in three weeks, they deserve the OC position....

Just my take....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't believe this is an "audition"

Dec 2, 2014, 8:07 PM

If this were just an audition, wouldn't Dabo named them interim coordinators? If he brings in someone else after the bowl game, it would look like a demotion of Scott and Eliot. I don't think that would look good at all. I think this is for the long haul.

If this had happened last year at this time...

Dec 2, 2014, 5:09 PM

I would have said dumb move, but Dabo just beat the chickens and went 9-3. He was a knats
hair away from beating FSU (if CM had had a under the center one yard play), so I'm saying
go for it. I'm like the college football coaches these days "I'm all in until the next time I'm not."
Its all about money to them, and its all about winning to me.

Sometimes when you have two it means you don't have one.

Would rather one or the other be the OC, preferably Scott.

And didn’t we try this set-up with Jeff’s dad Brad Scott & Mike O’Cain?

Re: New Story: Swinney Names Co-Offensive Coordinators

Dec 2, 2014, 6:09 PM

I saw others mentioning these things. Dabo had no experience. Chad Morris had no college playcalling experience. Coordinator doesn't solely involve calling plays. So why are people ignoring these comments?! And for the people comparing high school playcalling to elite level d-1 playcalling all I can do is LOL. In high school the level of player and coach talent is apples to oranges and not even a fair comparison.

One is leaving

Dec 2, 2014, 6:23 PM

The way I read it is it's short term here. If that is correct and he hires one of them as the sole OC, then the other is probably going to leave. I feel like it is Scott's job to lose though. I don't think we would want either of them to leave b/c of the recruiting abilities that they both have. I can only hope that Dabo knows what he is doing with this. I know Scott has been groomed for the position under CM, just hope his play calling decisions will not leave us wondering "why did he call that?" more often than not.

Re: One is leaving

Dec 2, 2014, 6:24 PM

Both guys have shown that they are able to not only grab the attention of high caliber athletes but make an impact when they arrive on campus. We don't know how much influence these guys had in game planning over the past years and obviously they did enough to convince Dabo and the administration that they are up to the challenge. Could be a dynamic duo if one sits up in the box reading defenses while the other calls the plays

Re: New Story: Dabo made the right decision

Dec 2, 2014, 8:40 PM

I think Dabo made the right call on this one. I don't think, al though I may be wrong, that Tony or Jeff were going anywhere. Dabo has made some bizarre decisions according to a lot of people, but look where the Tigers are now. Nationally ranked, elite recruiting classes and.high graduation rates. He made his decision to have Co-Coordinators. He also was able to keep 2 Coaches that are great as position coaches. Best thing he kept 2 dynamic recruiters that know talent, raw or polished. It will be interesting to see how it works out, but I think it was a great move.to promote from within the Tiger Staff. GO TIGERS!!!

Re: New Story: Swinney Names Co-Offensive Coordinators

Dec 2, 2014, 10:29 PM

We all need to step back from the ledge. Coaching "titles" are just that. Although they do carry some "hierarchical" weight, they also help to justify salaries. I do believe Dabo has had a plan for the departure of Chad since the day CM arrived on campus. I also believe that he has delegated dedicated responsibilities to each OC...the man knows people and he has learned from his prior mistakes (note to self:see Napier and Steele). It's not just about title...recruiting, player confidence and coaching staff stability and continuity play a big part of successful, long running programs...so step back and take a deep breath...the ledge will still be there next year and the following, and if things DO go south, I'll see you there then.

Re: New Story: Swinney Names Co-Offensive Coordinators

Dec 2, 2014, 10:20 PM

I have never heard of co-coordinators. This could lead to problems if there is not a hierarchy in place to handle decision making. Also, it seems to me Elliot and Scott could consciencely or unconsciencely be thinking the job must be too big for me to handle by myself. It might be interpreted as a lack of confidence by Dabo in them as individuals to do the job. This job may eventually become a turnoff for both Elliot and Scott. I hope it does not.

Re: New Story: Swinney Names Co-Offensive Coordinators

Dec 3, 2014, 12:38 AM

Everyone relax...First off, a lot can change in the next 9 months. Secondly, Co-Offensive Coordinators doesn't mean two guys are fighting like children on the sideline over whether to run the ball or throw it. There's much more to being an offensive coordinator than calling plays. Having two bright young minds building a new gameplan every week is more beneficial than one bright mind. I think these guys will work together very well behind closed doors to make our offense work. On gameday I think Jeff Scott will be the main man calling the shots with Dabo giving his input at times just like he did with Chad Morris.
