Cooper: Snapped fibula felt like "I had gotten hit in the leg with a football"

Prior to the season opener against Georgia, senior tight end Sam Cooper ran out onto the field at Sanford Stadium ready to start his final campaign as a Tiger with a bang. A few minutes later, his night ended with a pop instead of a bang. Full Story »

Good story. Relieved this isn't a new injury report too the way it's been going.

What exactly happened?

Oct 10, 2014, 8:00 AM

Was he just running around normally when this happened, or was it a "hard" plant and turn or something? If it wasn't some kind of abnormal plant and move, then how can something like this happen to a young healthy guy? Are we to assume that he maybe had a lingering "hairline crack" from some other incident, and that it finally gave out during "normal" movement?

Good question. It's never been explained.***

Stoudt threw the ball too low and hit him in the leg. Much like the throw he made to Leggett in the endzone.

Honestly

It is surprising he knew he did it.

I broke mine at some point and would have never known it if not for a knee injury later. They took Xrays of my knee and lower leg, then the Dr came in and said "You didn't list your broken fibula on your injury history. When did you break it?" I was like "I have never broken my fibula." The Dr said "yes you have. It's healed now, but it has been broken." When I told friends about it later two different people had similar stories.

A leg may be broken but the bones not separated, it will heal fairly quickly in that case, the fibula is not load bearing, but it is part of stability control.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's the fibula...it doesn't support the weight of the leg

Oct 10, 2014, 11:42 AM [ in reply to Still don't see how you recover from a broken leg ]

like the tibia. That may help it heal more quickly...
