Why is everyone so terrified of soccer's popularity?

Jun 28, 2014, 1:37 PM

I grew up playing and loving baseball. I grew up in Georgia, a hardcore Braves fan. Now, I can't tell you the last time I watched a baseball game. Soccer has become the second most popular sport in America, only to football. I've posted some of this on other threads, but mid-day mid-week World Cup games are getting higher ratings than the World Series. That isn't just American games, either. I live in Austin, TX and the entire town was shut down Thursday for the U.S. game. No one went to work. Have you guys not seen the enormous crowds gathered in the largest cities in the country for each and every game? Have you ever seen that with baseball? The Barclays Premiere League in England gets better TV ratings in the U.S. than baseball. The World Cup is blowing away the NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Finals and World Series. It is ok to not like soccer and it is ok to like soccer and all other "American" sports. However, it is just plain stupid and ignorant to ignore the popularity in this country. MLS ratings are even up by large amounts. Kids all over the country are largely choosing to play soccer over the other sports. I just don't understand why everyone in the south is so afraid of this and feels like they have to attack it. I promise you, folks, that in the major cities in this country, soccer is HUGE and it is growing every single day! Where I live in Austin, Texas, every sports bar promotes the World Cup and Premiere League games to attract crowds. There are dozens of soccer bars that show only soccer. No one promotes baseball.

Basketball and baseball are way, and I mean way more popular.

Is that why random World Cup games in the middle of the day are getting higher TV ratings than the World Series? I'm sure baseball is more popular in the south, but it is not nationwide. But please if you have evidence to support what you say, please let me see it.

US is still in it right now. I'm a fan of soccer (though not on the football/basketball level) and it annoys me that people still find it funny to make dumb, unfunny jokes about the sport, but it definitely isn't on the same level as basketball or even baseball in the US right now. There aren't many people following the MLS or getting up on sat/sun morning to watch the EPL.

Clearly the #1 sport in the world and just as clearly still 4th/5th in the US depending on where hockey popularity sits these days.

than mainstream sports also. Olympic Figure Skating gets good ratings during the Olympics every 4 years; does that mean it's popularity rivals basketball and baseball? No.

This tourney is blessed by the fact that it is taking place in June-July when there is almost nothing else of note going on in the sports world. If the World Cup happened in November up against college football and the NFL, you think anybody would watch or talk about it?

Two days after this World Cup is over, you won't hear a single word mentioned about it on sports networks for another 3 1/2 years. About the same amount of run as the X Games.

the Olympics. People watch all kinds of sports during the Olympics that they would never watch ordinarily, because national pride is attached to it and we all want the USA to win.

But I don't know many people (if any) in my family or friend circle who could name three, heck even one major league soccer team. It's grown a bit in popularity sure, but it has a long way to go before it tops baseball/basketball.

Re: LOL

Jun 30, 2014, 1:34 AM

Soccer is trending at the youth levels for a couple reasons:
1. Football is losing some steam due to the concussion crisis.
2. Baseball is expensive(unless you only play rec) and arms are being ruined every day.

Soccer is cheap, easy access, and you can practice alone or with others. Also an advantage in basketball.

All of that is in soccer's favor and it still is not in the big 3. When it becomes top 3 in America I'll move elsewhere.

Re: You are literally insane if you think soccer is #2 behind

Jun 30, 2014, 1:42 PM

I'd agree that the MLB is certainly ahead of the MLS, but at this point I wouldn't even think of the MLS a the most popular soccer league among Americans. It's the English Premier League. There are also dozens of other leagues to follow as well. Whether it be La Liga, whose global relevance is very strong, or perhaps a Latin American league whose relevance is strong with certain immigrant groups.

Overall, as I said before, I don't think soccer is there quite yet but it's gaining ground fast and will probably pass baseball relatively soon.

The gap between Soccer and Baseball is closing very very fast in America.

MLS is a fast growing league right now while Baseball attendance is down.

Jun 28, 2014, 1:53 PM [ in reply to Re: why is every lib/commie/socialist/pinko jhort wearing, purse ]

approved 'visitors' in the us. it's national pride on top of that with an event played 1 every four years vs an annual championship.

yankees dodgers or cubs would have pulled higher.

"Optimism was high after a 2012 season in which ratings were up on ESPN/ESPN2, and the league entered the first of a three-year deal with NBC. The Peacock delivered slick production value and the sort of commitment and focus on the league that previous partner Fox was just never able to provide.

In 2013, though, the league's ratings have taken a downturn.

ESPN/ESPN2 finished the 2012 season with an average of 311,000 viewers for its games, but that number is down to 227,000 this season. Meanwhile, NBC Sports Network averaged 125,000 viewers per game last season, and is currently at 102,000 in the 2013 campaign.

“To be honest with you, I was hoping that we would maintain last year's numbers,” NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network president of programming Jon Miller told Goal.

Any reasonable discussion of the drop-off in this year's ratings must include the unusually strong lead-in programming the league enjoyed in 2012. With NBC carrying the Olympics and ESPN broadcasting Euro 2012, MLS enjoyed a huge boost in ratings for games directly following those two events.

“We were fortunate last year during our inaugural season with NBC that we certainly had some very, very powerful lead-ins with Olympic programming, and we haven't seen that this year,” MLS executive vice president Dan Courtemanche told Goal.

Still, MLS lags badly behind its American competition in television numbers. For example, the National Hockey League – easily the closest of the so-called “big four” U.S. professional sports to MLS in terms of ratings - averaged 392,000 viewers per game on NBC Sports Network in 2013, more than tripling the MLS audience.

The downturn in television viewership this season comes at an inopportune time for MLS, as this month, the league will begin negotiations with all of its network partners for new television deals. All three of the league's American television contracts – NBC, ESPN and Univision – expire after the 2014 season."

Nice research about the MLS but

Jun 28, 2014, 2:05 PM

2013 was also the first year that every single English Premier league game was broadcasted live on tv or via the internet in the US. Do you think their was viewer competition there? Americans typically want to watch the best and the MLS is far from that. But it is getting better every year and more big names are coming.

I said nothing about the MLS except that in 11 cities, it has better attendance than their MLB teams. Most American Soccer fans watch European Leagues. I'm a Chelsea fan and watch every single game. The majority of my friends are hardcore Man U or Arsenal and watch every game. Like I said, there is a reason NBC just paid 250 million for rights to the Premiere League with no American teams. The MLS will grow, but the elite talent is in Europe and millions upon millions of Americans watch every game.

First things first: the idiot comment wasn't intended to rile you up. Not trying to "move the needle". Simply saw something I considered to be ridiculous.

Regarding the largest contingent of the fanbase being hispanic, these numbers suggest otherwise:

65% of the MLS fanbase is white, 34% is hispanic. No doubt that's a high number of hispanics, but that's to be expected. However they're by no means the majority.

Jun 29, 2014, 1:28 PM

I don't disagree with you regarding the growing hispanic/Latin population and that many of them are here illegally. The rising number of Latin people in the US is surely making an impact on the popularity of the sport, but the thing that made me cringe a bit is when you suggested that illegal aliens are the ones driving its popularity.

We are certainly becoming a more international, diverse country, but I think things like technology are a big piece of the sport's rising popularity as well. Twenty years ago it would be very difficult to follow something like La Liga or the Premier League from the United States. Now it's incredibly easy.

This isn't just limited to the United States and soccer though. It's happening around the world. Here in Brasil, the popularity of the NBA & NFL is skyrocketing. The younger generation has jumped on board with these sports while the older part of the population is reluctant (sound familiar?). The American population in Brasil isn't growing at a high rate, and it's extremely rare to see another American living here. It's not a reverse-browning of the population driving the trend, it's greater access.

Ultimately, I think that's the real driving force behind soccer's rising popularity in the United States.

I don't think it will ever reach the top two in America but it is just a matter of years, not decades before it dethrones baseball as #3 in the USA (football #1 and basket ball #2). The demographics in America are changing very rapidly. And the influx of immigrants and natives growing up with it will stoke the fire.

That's over half the teams in the MLS. Young people in every major city are watching European Regular Season Soccer and a lot of cities are watching the MLS. Soccer may have it's dull moments but it's at least steady action for 90+ minutes with only one significant break and the impact of a goal can be so great that many games never really feel like they are over and the anticipation of that huge goal can really make the game enjoyable.

Jun 28, 2014, 3:35 PM [ in reply to I don't care if people don't like soccer ]

they have tried that in the past and it's failed. Not every burgeoning sport keeps growing. USFL failed for ESPN. UFC was on the rise for a long time, but recently with some super stars retiring, PED use, and no new stars, UFC is starting to fall off somewhat. I respect Soccer, but it is far from becoming an established major sport in the USA. Long way to go before that becomes a possibility.

football and basketball, not soccer. The children of immigrants are more Americanized than their parents. I know a Mexican women who has differences on music with her children. They like hip hop, she doesn't. She likes Mariachi music, her kids do not. Same thing will be happening with sports. There are a lot of immigrant children that are into Football and Basketball more than soccer, that's because they spent more time growing up here than in their native country.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: And the children of those immigrants will be playing...

Jun 28, 2014, 7:35 PM

There are small minds in small places. No matter what facts are given, there are people who will hate soccer because it is "UnAmerican". People stuck in their ways will never change. They will always hate what they hate and never try new things. The sad thing is instead of saying, oh well soccer isn't my cup of tea, but I respect those who love it and it is definetly growing and they are good athletes, they say nothing but negatives. There are some of you who have been respectful, but unfortunately, there is a large majority who just try to degrade anything that doesn't fit them. They are the same people who hate gays and minorities because they don't fit their lifestyle. No one asks anyone to like soccer. I think every soccer supporter on this site has just asked that people be open minded. That is impossible for some people.

Fox and Telemundo, the Spanish-language network that is a division of NBC Universal, won the American television rights to broadcast soccer’s World Cup in 2018 and 2022, according to soccer and television officials.

The rights fee was not announced by FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, but a person familiar with the outcome said that the amount was significantly higher than the combined $425 million that ESPN ($100 million) and the Spanish-language network Univision ($325 million) paid for the American rights to the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

Bids for the English-language rights for 2018 and 2022 by Fox, ESPN and NBC Universal were made in Zurich, where FIFA is located, on Wednesday, along with Spanish-language bids by Univision and Telemundo. Bids were resubmitted Thursday.

ESPN had been widely considered to be the favorite to retain the rights for the 2018 World Cup, which will be played in Russia, and the 2022 World Cup, which will be played in Qatar.

Because ESPN is the country’s premier sports network and has heavily invested in American soccer, Friday’s decision brought concern by American soccer officials. At the same time, there was hope that Fox might be able to help grow the sport through its various platforms.

“We made a disciplined bid that would have been both valuable to FIFA and profitable for our company, while continuing to grow our unprecedented coverage of the World Cup and Women’s World Cup events,” EPSN said in a statement. “We were aggressive while remaining prudent from a business perspective.”

ESPN said it remained committed to “presenting soccer at its highest level across our platforms,” including the 2012 European Championship, the English Premier League, Major League Soccer and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Jun 28, 2014, 2:37 PM [ in reply to That's interesting considering FOX just outbid ESPN for ]

Considering the rights this year were 325 million, Fox probably paid 400 Million or more for them. I didn't say ESPN would get them. I said Cowherd said ESPN wanted them more than any other sporting event. Fox must have too. It isn't surprising. Fox Sports pays a ton for the European Champions League rights already. Fox loves soccer.

Apparently far more than the 425 mill combined that was paid for this years according to the article that someone just posted. Networks are in huge bidding wars over soccer. Aren't you just proving my point more?

That's a lot for something that isn't played on American soil. They are investing 250 million in a league that is not played on American soil. That says a lot.

look up baseball, nfl, college football, college basketball, nba and the billions upon billions for US viewing plus any the of "whatever" they might get outside the US?

it's a world market you're discussing, they paid almost nothing for those rights, 83mil? they probably went thru a lazy boy in the nbc lounge and found that change.

listen, it'll get better for you, but pulling "once every 4 year numbers" out & tossing them around like they really amount to anything versus an annual event is a little dishonest, especially when someone shows you nascar taps dat #### on an annual basis... hockey does too btw.

if you love the sport that's awesome! i dig that and support you in what you like, but don't come here with that tired pinko rhetoric about being afraid or not understanding or the "world's game this or that"; a world game which is often celebrated in some far away 3rd world country kicking a coconut. it's not cosmopolitan and neither are you for liking it.

Jun 28, 2014, 3:05 PM [ in reply to no. heck, nbc paid 4.4 billion for nascar's rights, ]

If you combine the 250 Million being paid by NBC for EPL rights for the next 3 seasons with no American teams and not on American soil with the 500 million or whatever the final number is being paid for World Cup rights by FOX (an event that lasts for less than a month every 4 years), that's 750 Million being invested in the country on soccer that's being played outside of this country. That's not even counting the MLS, which is outdrawing the MLB team in their city in 11 cities. Those numbers matter.

i gave you those numbers, msl is 5th and had a huge drop in 2013 over 2012 with the olympics wave passing. you might be better off dealing with that and then hope lacrosse is too expensive for most high schools to take on or it will surpass soccer. last i saw, lax was the nation's fastest growing sport?

lax gives americans, gawd help us, what many desire most, a sport that takes balls to play. sorry, soccer needs to take the violence out of the stands and down to the field for a lot of people to take notice.

Clemson Football is my number one sporting interest above all else, so this is my board and we are free to talk about other topics. about which board it actually belongs on on Tigernet, but people simply annoyed by the fact that others want to discuss soccer and feel the need to go out of their way to try to criticize, make fun of, and vocalize their disdain for the sport, really aren't accomplishing anything.

I'm not in favor of others trying to force soccer down the throats of those that don't care either, but anyone that comes into a legitimate world cup thread and posts some crap about how stupid soccer in can just gtfo as far as I'm concerned.

There are a lot of older tiger fans on this board who spend a lot of time on Tnet and they are the ones telling us to grow up but their comments don't seam to show the same maturity they wish to impose on the rest of us.

don't care for it. No matter how much you like it (which is perfectly fine), and no matter how the media tries to convince us otherwise, soccer just isn't that big of a deal here in the good ole USA. I have nothing against soccer, but I didn't grow up playing it, and have little interest it beyond the World Cup, which I have enjoyed, but only when the USA is playing. Soccer is just second fiddle here to the likes of football, baseball, basketball, golf, horseshoes, racin', and rasslin'.

Jun 28, 2014, 3:32 PM

And that's fine. You don't have to like it. The facts are the facts. More kids are playing soccer in this country than any other sport and the 18-34 demographic (which is the most important among advertisers) care more about soccer than anything, but the NFL. That's why the World Cup is getting better ratings than the World Series. It just can't be denied the rise in popularity and the direction the sport is going. 20 years from now, it is going to matter what 18-34 year olds are watching, not that their dead grandparents loved baseball. No young person in this country watches baseball. I'm close to 30 years old, I'm not a teenager, but I honestly, don't know one person my age or younger that watches baseball. Everyone I know watches soccer. Everyone I know watches football. The media and the networks are pushing it because they are looking out for their future and they know what the young generations and their kids love. It is soccer. Heck guys in 1950, everyone said football would never be as big as baseball. Now, it isn't even a comparison. Things change, cultures change and with the influx of the Hispanic communities all over this country, it increases soccer revenue even more. Everyone is entitled to what they enjoy watching. It is just a dumb argument to act like people don't care. This country follows what it's biggest cities do and look at soccer ratings in DC, NY, SF, LA, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Seattle, etc...It cannot be denied the direction in which it is heading.

Basketball is the 2nd most popular sport.....

Jun 28, 2014, 3:21 PM

in this country followed by baseball. Soccer still has a long way to go, to even be considered a popular American sport. The MLS is still largely a marginal professional league. None of the best players in the world play in the MLS, and no an old David Beckham coming over late in his career doesn't count.

I have no problem with soccer, but it's popularity in this country is being vastly exaggerated. The only time people get into soccer in this country is during the world cup out of national pride. Sort of like the Olympics. A lot of people watch the Olympics, but they never watch any Olympic sports when the Olympics aren't being held.

Using Austin is a bad example. It's a very liberal and unique city in the country. What happens there isn't indicative of the rest of the country.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Basketball is the 2nd most popular sport.....

Jun 28, 2014, 3:38 PM

All major cities are liberal and that is where the ratings are huge. Austin ratings aren't nearly as high as NY, DC, SF, Chicago, Houston, Seattle, LA, etc as I've previously stated. Large liberal cities are where all the young people are and they will determine what is popular going forward.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Soccer does not get higher ratings than basketball...

Jun 28, 2014, 3:45 PM

listen I respect soccer, but you are over exaggerating it's popularity. What your describing could happen in the future but unlikely. Like I said before people in this country only get into Soccer during the World Cup, just like the Olympics. And the best athletes in this country are still choosing Football and Basketball.

Also, young hispanic immigrants are not into soccer the way their parents are. They are much more Americanized. South Carolina has the largest growing hispanic population in the nation, and the type of sports apparel young hispanics wear are football and basketball related.

I'm not putting soccer down, it's just what your describing is a far off possibility that may never happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didn't say baseball wasn't dying...

Jun 28, 2014, 3:59 PM

I was stating that the assertions of soccer's popularity in the USA are exaggerated and based off of a lot of what if's. ESPN has failed a bunch of times with different pro leagues. ESPN has actually never had anything to do with an increased popularity in a sport. ESPN was way behind the curve in catching up with the popularity that the UFC once had. So using ESPN is a bad example. ESPN has only been successful in promoting sports that are already popular and got popular while ESPN had a dismissive attitude about. So ESPN over promoting isn't a good sign of lasting impact.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I didn't say baseball wasn't dying...

Jun 28, 2014, 4:04 PM

Espn actually does later the perception of some sports, most specifically soccer. Espn bashed soccer for decades and in turn America echoes what they hear. Soccer was made fun of because they were told to make fun of it or didn't understand it.

Espn no longer is bashing it like they used to, all of a sudden star athletes of other sports are coming out talking about how they are actually huge soccer fans.

It will alter the perception here over a short period of time.

It will never change the view of the typical 'football fan' that grew up trying to be popular by posting anti soccer threads to get other people's attention.

It's really not at all about having the best athletes in America play soccer, it's about having kids dedicated to playing it every single day like they do in other countries.

Those 18-34 year olds back then were exposed to soccer in FAR greater dosages than today, as they actually ATTENDED these matches all over the country.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: lather. rinse, repeat

Jun 29, 2014, 6:13 PM [ in reply to lather. rinse, repeat ]

I think the exposure today is far, far greater than that of what it was in 1994. Yes, the World Cup was held in the US that year, but at that time ESPN was nowhere near what it is today. The internet was in its infancy. If you weren't watching games, you'd only see soccer info on ESPN or your local news.

Nowadays, ESPN is a behemoth and there are several other 24 hour sports networks. There are literally thousands of websites devoted to soccer. Everyone has smart phones which allows access to all of this information anytime, anywhere. Heck, ESPN is broadcasting every single game on the WatchESPN app.

The exposure is much, much higher now.

You mentioned the people who were 18-34 back then and whether or not they care now...but when it comes to introducing a new sport, the importance lies in getting kids interested. 20 years later the sport is certainly as popular as it's ever been in the USA.

Is that why NBC just paid 250 million for rights to the Premiere League the next few seasons? A league that has no American teams and doesn't play any games in America? They don't do that for other Olympic Sports. Anyone cutting down soccer players as athletes is a moron. I played high school baseball and I was an above average high school baseball player and to this day, I am in great shape and I never played soccer competitively. Those soccer players are better athletes than any baseball player on the planet and most other sports. I was good at every sport growing up. Soccer was the hardest that I ever even attempted to play. It is non stop running and their coordination is unbelievable. What Lionel Messi does on a soccer field is more impressive than what any other athlete in the world does. You don't have to like soccer, but you just make yourself look like an old, ignorant idiot when you say things like kids who play soccer aren't good enough to play real sports. It is the most popular sport in the world for a reason. Everyone can agree that it that Golf and Baseball have the least athletic players on the whole and I say that as a baseball player.

Ok,enough of the bad jokes.I think the reason I don't follow soccer is because of a lack of knowledge of team rosters, and positions. When Clemson plays FSU,or Carolina, you know the names of the players and their positions. Not so ,for me with soccer.
Another thing,I could care less if Chile is playing Spain,or Portugal is playing Mexico. If the U.S. is not on,I just don't watch.
I could say the same for professional hockey. It's not because of it's popularity,it's just I don't really care for the sport.

Soccer is significantly on the rise. Its a high suspense, constantly moving sport with a lot of on edge excitement. No, it isn't the constant explosiveness and violence of football, its about precisions and making that impossible shot through the goal to win. Its a "happy" sport and one that compliments the party culture of the younger generations today. Its only going to get more popular. That and it is a very forgiving and "blue collar" sport that anyone can play anywhere.

I can see where soccer might be big on video with the younger generation and it may be enough to spark a surge in popularity in spectators...but as far as some great increase in soccer athletes/participants???

Well, I think some of you guys are ignoring a BIG reality in youth today called OBESITY.....(no pun intended).

I work with young kids and with childhood obesity being what it is, unless something dramatically and quickly changes, I don't see how soccer will become all the rage you guys are thinking it will become in this country as far as kids playing it more than baseball.

Yea, soccer might be "fun" when the kids are little but I'm telling you, the older they get, their interests move towards other sports that are more popular (esp with the girls), less physically demanding in their minds, and offer a more promising future in terms of scholarships, pro careers, etc.

There is a real reason childhood obesity exists...kids are NOT active! Getting them to participate in ANY kind of physical activity is considered success...soccer is a serious stretch, especially for middle schoolers and especially if you ask them to play for longer than 15 minutes or so!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Look, soccer's popularity with kids is simple. Don't make it out to be more than what it is.

Jun 28, 2014, 6:14 PM

1) It's cheap. One ball, a grass parking lot, and a few cones and you are set. No bats, gloves, equipment, etc...

2) It's easy. Put a bunch of kids on the field with a ball and they baby sit each other for an hour chasing it. The "coaches" don't even have to know the rules.

3) There's limited chance of injury/embarrassment. No chance of getting dinged by a pitch or line drive, no tackling, if you're bad at it you can still just run around and look pretty good, etc... Moms love all of this.

Finally, the logic which assumes folks who play soccer as kids will love it when they're older is seriously flawed. If that were the case, there would only be happy meals on the McDonald's menu, and we'd all watch Thomas and Friends after supper.

PS: This isn't an attack on soccer.

Learning/coaching perspective.

You can basically tell the kids to try and kick it in the net, and turn them loose. (Oversimplification)

With baseball and football you have more rules, even at the most basic level. It's easier for kids play and coaches to coach soccer, at least early on.

FM is simply pointing out the main reasons it is so popular as a kid's sport, and why, unlike football, baseball, and basketball, that popularity doesn't result in anything close to the same level of popularity at higher levels.

Regardless of the reason(s), higher level soccer is not comparable (at this time) to football, baseball, or basketball in terms of popularity, participation, or cultural significance, and "soccer fever" as is being hyped in the media over the last few days or weeks largely the result of a spike in interest due to the U.S. participation in the World Cup.

That's not a knock on soccer, and nobody is claiming that demographics aren't changing and soccer isn't growing in popularity. It's just that at this time, soccer doesn't belong in the same conversation with football, baseball, and basketball (and maybe a few others), no matter how badly some want it to.

Using TV ratings of an nation vs nation international event that is only held every four years in comparison to annual events such as the NBA Playoffs or World Series is very apples to oranges. The huge ratings do not demonstrate that soccer has surpassed baseball or basketball.

Those ratings are a reflection of rapid growth, though. Some folks on here are pretty good at trying to spin and rationalize away something that is pretty obvious. I have not been a fan of soccer but you have to be tone deaf to not grasp that immigration plus the soccer mom effect plus added exposure is rapidly changing the dynamic. Stop being so insecure about it.

I find it funny when all these soccer fans come pouring out of the woodwork proclaiming soccer's place in the American mainstream thanks to good World Cup ratings. You know the World Cup is a novelty, right? It happens every 4 years- like the Summer Olympics- and the USA happens to be respectable. The fact of the matter, though, is that MLS ratings are abysmal and Premier League ratings aren't much more impressive than NHL ratings- another sub-par sport. No, soccer will NEVER overtake football, basketball, or baseball. It will always be secondary in this country, regardless of little surges in popularity during the sports premier event.

What I don't understand is why soccer fans insist on telling us how great the sport is and how popular it is/is becoming here. Why? To make yourselves feel better? Is it an insecurity?

game.

Not a flame here, but maybe you should research a little bit first. Each point you made is simply not true.

1) Good soccer balls are expensive. Players do have equipment to buy: cleats, shin guards, etc... It costs the same or more gear wise to play soccer than baseball or basketball.

2) "Coaches" must know the rules and have certifications in order to coach in most youth leagues. The age of the kids playing dictates the tempo of the game (as it does in all sports). I've witnessed many youth baseball and football games as a player and as a father. Some coaches are better than others-that is a constant across all sports.

3) Soccer is a fast paced game and there is more chance of being injured than in most other sports simply due to the lack of padding. I've played and coached for 20+ years and have broken several bones and torn/strained ligaments and muscles. The more competitive the league, the greater the chance of injury-regardless of age.

Again, not a flame-just making some observations of my own.

I've been laughing at some of the posts here about soccer. I'm not a liberal and I don't care whether or not people like soccer. I really don't. I am a conservative, beer drinking, licensed, concealed weapon carrier who likes to play and watch many different sports.

My opinions about things I like change from time to time. For example, when I was under 30, I was a boob man. Now that I am over 40, I am more of a butt man.

My wife, who is also addicted to TigerNet can vouch for most of what I have posted... ;)

That's because you live in Austin for starters which is made up of a very progressive demographic and no local pro sports team. Add in the fact that its probably 40% latino and growing and of course they like soccer because they're not Americans.

The fact of the matter is as soon as you get to be about 13 you realize that soccer is pretty lame.

People keep saying that the WC is just experiencing the normal surge in ratings. That's obviously BS. Through the first 48 matches (not just the US matches), ESPN has seen a 46% increase in viewership since the last WC, just four years ago. That's amazing growth. No it's not as popular as baseball or basketball and nowhere close to football. But you cannot logically deny its rapid growth. It's only going to get more popular over the next 15-20 years. I don't understand why people are so sensitive about acknowledging the trajectory of the sport in the US.

Why are American soccer fans terrified of being American?

I keep seeing American writers using British English like Brazil HAVE won the game. We don't speak British English!

Additionally the World Cup is an event like the Olympics. Swimming is huge at the Olympics. People don't care any other time. Soccer is similar.

Americans are not going to glorify the likes if primadonnas like Ronaldo and Neymar. These guys flopping around and pretending like they are injured won't catch on here.

In general Americans are not afraid of soccer, they are more sick of hearing that they aren't sophisticated enough to watch it if they don't like it.

It is difficult for people to see beyond their own minute enviornment when it is all that has been taught to them.

The scope of how overwhelmingly soccer is number one everywhere except for a few places in the entire world is beyond their capacity. It is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when it will take over. The behavior on this board suggests people are quite threatened, also statistics clearly bear out where it currently stands.

This goes beyond football but the sore loser attitudes over their discontent based on racist or non elevated thinking. They want to live in a certain place so bad, they will try to destroy anything that threatens, or is percieved as a threat. they are children.

I grew up playing football, baseball, hockey, basketball, but as a fan of major sports it is just plain dumb not to recognize this sport and competition.

There are currently American soccer players who love this, their families and loved ones supporting them. They are sacrificing, and hurting, and crying for us. They want this as badly as we want to beat the coots. How can we not support that.

Some of you make me ashamed to be a Clemson fan on this board.
