Pete didn't want to step down. Had his hand forced by the AD for some reason.

The AD was asked about it this evening on the radio. It was obvious it wasn't Pete's decision to step down from football.

Apr 30, 2014, 1:18 PM

Agreed, step back for sure. Munson is not fun to listen to, I see a big drop off on radio broadcast. Sounds like a Yankee (no disrespect but it's almost corny) and just doesn't have a good idea of what is going on. Always tries to spin it when he doesn't know what is going on and laugh it off or put the blame on someone else

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sounds like a Yankee?!?

Apr 30, 2014, 6:39 PM

I think Don Munson speaks well. It's sad that broadcasters speaking well (which is what they are trained to do) is a problem for some. I guess some of you want a good 'ol boy with a thick Southern drawl. No thanks.

In fact, that's one reason why I don't care for Will Merritt. Not the image of Clemson University I care to portray.

I'm sure I'll miss his colorful and brilliant action-packed description of every play... they were all the same!

I'll never forget this one:
"25, 20, 15, 10, 5, and there's orange in the end zone."

Or this gem:
"Boyd back to pass, it's caught! 15, 10, 5, and there's orange in the end zone.

Or this hall of fame call:
"Interception! 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, (player is already in the end zone celebrating) 10, 5, and there's orange in the end zone!"

Man, those were classics! How will Don ever top those?!?!

Games are still on the radio? Who knew? ;)

Apr 30, 2014, 3:21 PM

I haven't listened to a game on the radio in about 15 years...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Games are still on the radio? Who knew? ;)

Apr 30, 2014, 8:34 AM

> I haven't listened to a game on the radio in about 15

I LOVE listening to the radio call of the game while watching on TV or even at the game. The radio guys are much better at letting you know what is different about who's in the game or out, who's hurt, what's going on along the sideline, etc.

You will almost never hear a TV guy let you know that Freshman so-and-so just came in the game at cornerback and so "what is wrong with so-and-so" the starter and "Dear Lord can the freshman cover their WR", etc.

Sometimes the radio lets you know exactly why some play worked or didn't work because they are so familiar with the personnel and the plays.

You are really missing a lot of info when not listening to the radio call.

I will say this though....when watching on TV some of my friends watch for my reaction because the radio is often ahead of the TV. Some friends love to know beforehand and some hate it. I like to know beforehand so I can watch the particular spot or player were the action is headed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Games are still on the radio? Who knew? ;)

You sound like a lot of fun to watch the games with. Do you wear your headphones during the pregame show too? For like the entire six hour pregame show?

I'll be honest, when radio headsets were a bit bigger, say back in the 90's, I looked like a big goober with the big earphones and the big radio on my belt or either those giant radio headphones with the antenna sticking up.

Now I just use my tiny earbuds and a small mp3 that receives a radio signal....much less gooberish.

And no, don't do any pregame radio....that is usually some bad radio.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm one of those fans that also like to listen to the game

May 1, 2014, 2:57 AM [ in reply to Re: Games are still on the radio? Who knew? ;) ]

on the radio while I'm in Death Valley. It gives me a different insight to what is happening during the game. And it enhances my gameday experience. however, I do look kind of strange with my binoculars, radio headset, and Clemson hat.
And yes, ladies, I do have one of my ear buds out so that I can still carry on a conversation with my wife during the game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Is there really not a Clemson person who could do this job?

Apr 30, 2014, 4:47 PM

A former player, or at least an alumnus, is what we need in the role. Who cares if it's a homer? That's what you want to hear if you're tuning into Clemson radio. Munson is awful on the radio. He's fake, his voice is high-pitched, and he has no genuine passion for Clemson. It is beyond me how he has been able to worm his way into the athletic department like he has. I won't listen to game broadcasts anymore. He adds no value to the athletic department and certainly not to the radio team. Go back to calling junior college games at app state, Don.

This must have been another well planned move by DS and DR. The only way to get Don Munson out of his a$$ is to give him another job that would require his time. Hopefully the suffering for the Clemson fans will be short lived, and Don Munson will also soon part ways with Clemson Athletics. He has to be the creepiest person in and around the program. Sucks at baseball too. I don't want to hear my teams announcer get more excited over what the other team is doing. All Orange, all the time!
