New Story: Swinney not in favor of player unions but does think reform is needed

Swinney not in favor of player unions but does think reform is needed

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney had plenty to say about Northwestern football players winning their lawsuit Wednesday, a lawsuit that would enable them to form a union. What does he have to say about it? Full Story »

Swinney can say that knowing a minor league system in football will NEVER in a million years pass. Grown men going up against highschool kids.................yikes.....can you imagine the lawsuits, injuries, and on and on. It takes 3 years of molding full grown war daddies just to get them ready for the league.

Imagine an 18 year old WR getting blown up by a 26 year old FS who has been in a program for years. End scene. Never gonna happen

Ain't a lot of full grown men playing single A ball. The NFL could set the age of the players in a development league. 17 - 23 ... which is about the same age range as in college. older players could got to Canada or Europe.

Big time college football exists thanks to collusion between

the NCAA and the NFL. The NFL has their "3 year removed" rule so that they get a free minor league system they don't have to pay for... But what happens when this minor league system is forced to happen because of the unions? They can set age restrictions on that too and people will just watch NFL Jr. instead of college football. This is a very real possibility.

1.Academics
2.Athletics
It is why they call them student athletes, right ?

You are correct it is NEVER going to happen, but the reason

Mar 26, 2014, 9:33 PM

Is not as idealistic as safety. The reason is money! The NFL isnt going to spend money on a "minor league", the NFL believes thats what college is for. That is why they fought Maurice Clarrett so hard.

Football players are now on a path that will change the landscape of NCAA football. Then you have the other divisions right behind Northwestern. The NCAA and NFL need to discuss solutions that both modernizes the "pay for play" and addresses player's concerns or the the NCAA faces a collective bargaining agreement with players; lawyers; and agents. Basketball and even baseball would likely follow as revenue generating sports. If the NFL and NCAA can't work on it together then players will likely end up in front of The Supreme Court and if they win the landscape will change on it's own.

I wouldn't put too much on the NLRB's decision.

Mar 27, 2014, 8:57 AM

Unfortunately, that organization has become highly political and is used as a pawn dealing with the strength an influences of labor unions in general. I would have actually been surprised if the NLRB had NOT ruled as they did since their ruling strengthens unionization in the "workplace."

NCAA and NFL do need to get in front of this though. A minor league is the best solution. The players do need to understand that there is a limited supply of money available. Most athletic departments lose money already. Adding to the cost of the players will require cutting cost elsewhere. Revenue can not increase indefinitely. People will only pay so much for cable TV, tickets, IPTAY, etc. Eventually, fans will stop forking out the money.

NFL is already seeing problems with tickets and attendance. While it is still the most popular sport, the NFL is starting to hit its limit on the ability to pass cost on to the consumer.

Yes sir. You are correct. Student Athletes. Not employees. I am assuming that the Grant in Aid spells all of that out and if not, the language should be changed or added to the Grant in Aid. They are students who are having their education paid for by the school or I guess the athletic department.

If they are going to consider themselves employees and join a union then they should pay their own tuition.

Actually, Dabo has the best perspective about this issue that I've heard so far. Yes, they do need to increase the player's stipend to offset constant inflation, and his idea about an NFL minor league is a great idea! Unionizing a group of college athletes will have serious and troubling consequences.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He knows the NFL owners don't want to fund a minor league.

The schools provide for a 4 or 5 year stay with an all-expenses-paid deal. I agree about 'some' spending money but the opportunities are already there. It should be a take it or leave it situation...
