Just curious

Mar 18, 2014, 9:27 AM

as to how many people on here have done that billion dollar bracket challenge?

I know the odds are ridiculously small but still "what if"

Outside of the ability to then do whatever I want for a profession for the rest of my life (volunteer, learn new skills, etc), the idea that I could then fund worthwhile ventures would be awesome.

Heck imagine the 100 Million tithe on that :).

Mar 18, 2014, 10:16 AM

if one of us won it, you could become the best year round santa ever.

How cool would it be to go to random apt complexes and just walk and say, hey I wanna pay of your residents' rent for the next year. Or walk around down town and give homeless people $100 bills. Or go to Duke energy and say I wanna pay this winter's power bills for all your low income families. Or go around to all the churches in your area and pay off all their debts if they have any. Or make sure the toys for tots people never have to worry about not having enough toys this xmas.

That would so so cool

That is, of course, possible.

Mar 18, 2014, 10:18 AM [ in reply to I'm nearly certain that being given an extremely ]

Its good to know your weaknesses.

I hope I could structure my life in such a way that very little actually changed for me outside of the freedom to visit my family more and to pursue less lucrative, but more rewarding, work.

No doubt the key, for me, would be to get that money out of my individual control as quickly as possible, and to set up some sort of charitable trust that required oversight by folks I trusted a good bit more than myself :)

I'd set up a 1 year CD for every week of the year in the

Mar 18, 2014, 10:31 AM

tune of $5mil a pop. Then take the interest off that CD and put the $5mil back in for another year, rinse and repeat. Even at 0.5%, that's $25,000 per week "income".

So that would take $260mil.

I would then give $50mil to my local church so they can finally fund the new building they want
I would then give $50mil to Clemson IPTAY
I would then give $50mil to ClemsonFund

By that point, I think I'd have ~$150mil left, in which I'd distribute to family, pay off friends' homes and debts, and create trusts for future children.

How on earth that could be a bad thing is beyond me. Making ~$100k a month on interest, I would travel the world, play golf wherever I want, fly friends for fun vacations, actually have time to program some stuff I've wanted to do, etc. etc.

It's nice to think of idealistic scenarios like that.

Mar 18, 2014, 10:33 AM

I believe that's idealistic. The Bible says that "wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished, but he that gathereth by labor shall increase" (Proverbs 13:11)

I wonder how likely it would be, if I had a billion dollars, that I would still recognize my need to depend totally on God for everything.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I see where you're coming from,

Mar 18, 2014, 10:37 AM

but with something like this it would take an absolute act of God for you to win anyways, and He gives people wealth to see how they will respond to it and how they use it.

So I would see it as more of a test than anything else and I hope I would be up for that challenge

The bad can only outweigh the good if you let it.
