All American yet

Mar 14, 2014, 10:25 PM

ESPN has him as a 2 star...

Re: All American yet

Mar 14, 2014, 10:31 PM

This confuses me as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We're the only Major Coference school to offer.***

That's a similar situation to KJ McDaniels out of HS ...

Mar 15, 2014, 6:52 PM

No real major offers, and yet ...

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

KJ worked his a$$ off for 3 years and got better each year

Mar 15, 2014, 7:36 PM

like so many of our great players in history.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-jospehg.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yep

Mar 15, 2014, 7:49 PM [ in reply to That's a similar situation to KJ McDaniels out of HS ... ]

and we have another 1 flying under the radar for '15 who is within an hour of Chapel Hill.....he is sour on Duke and UNC for not even knowing who he is. They will soon.

Our coaches are doing a phenomenal job in identifying these kids very early.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What are you trying to say? That Brownell knows talent when

Mar 15, 2014, 11:27 PM [ in reply to We're the only Major Coference school to offer.*** ]

he sees it, makes an offer, kids commits early and now he is a PARADE All-American? Brownell knows talent and can coach it up. Ex: see current team.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Congrats Gabe. Big, big honor!!***

Mar 14, 2014, 10:28 PM

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think this kid could be the domino

Mar 14, 2014, 10:28 PM

That spaces the floor for our offense and really allows KJ and Nnoko to take of next year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Gabe was late a bloomer..

Mar 14, 2014, 11:13 PM

ESPN never rated him any more after his Junior year. Recruiting expert Bob Gibbons has Gabe in the top 100 of this 2014 class. Look at the list of names on that Parade team. Gabe might not be in the top 20 players in this class but he gained respect and many know he is a hidden gem.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Gabe was late a bloomer..

Mar 15, 2014, 7:30 AM

ESPN didn't rate him beyond his junior year?!!! That's some rating system they've got going there.

Our friends

Mar 15, 2014, 11:35 AM

in Durham and Chapel Hill have TWO each from this list so they must all be pretty good players. Perhaps they didn't know Devoe had committed to Clemson or they would have left him off. Remember that two kids named Wise and Rome made this list years and they worked out pretty well at Clemson..... for a short while! I don't believe Jennings made this did he?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Our friends

Mar 15, 2014, 12:36 PM

Jennings was a McDonald's All-American.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't confuse Parade and McD's All-American with a list

Mar 15, 2014, 2:19 PM [ in reply to Our friends ]

of the best 20 or 30 high school players . Both Conde Nast (publisher of Parade) and McDonald's look for high character, academically solid kids to represent their brand. In 2009, for example, everyone knew John Wall was the best high school player in the country. He made neither AA team. Milton was second team Parade AA (there were 10 first teamers, 10 second teamers, etc.) as well as making the McDonald's game (one of about 35). Wall - on the other hand made the Michael Jordan All-Star game and Milt didn't ...

Notwithstanding all that, Parade All-America is a huge honor for Gabe. From 2star to Parade magazine in one season is an astonishing development. He may end up with a 4th star. Can't wait to have him in Clemson.

Re: Don't confuse Parade and McD's All-American with a list

Mar 15, 2014, 4:24 PM

What you say is true. Devoe has a 4.0+ gpa. Wise and Rome however were not scholars! Things have changed for the better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure about "character," but Wall was a good student***

Mar 19, 2014, 2:15 PM [ in reply to Don't confuse Parade and McD's All-American with a list ]

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bet now that Gabe will be demoted to a 1 Star talent ***

Bold Statement

Mar 15, 2014, 2:17 PM

IMO*

As soon as he steps on campus, he'll be the best player
on the entire Clemson team.

not 2nd.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

IMO, he won't be in top 5 with everyone we have back.

Mar 15, 2014, 4:44 PM

Heck, another incoming freshman, Donte Graham, should be better.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-jospehg.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He'll have to play defense as well as score to start at CU

Mar 15, 2014, 6:50 PM

I see him as coming off the bench next year when we need a scoring lift, but having to pay his dues on the defensive end of the court to break into Brad's Top 5.

I agree that Grantham probably has a better shot at starting next season.

Van Gregg?***

Mar 15, 2014, 7:28 PM

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-jospehg.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep, sorta like Van Gregg ... or Fred Gilliam

Mar 15, 2014, 7:55 PM

Though, more recently, I'm thinking more along the lines of Terrence Oglesby.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yep, sorta like Van Gregg ... or Fred Gilliam

Mar 16, 2014, 11:13 AM

How could you leave Butch Zatazalo out of this group???

He was long before most of you guys.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Butch

Mar 16, 2014, 11:17 AM

I left him out because Butch (a prolific scorer) was a starter his whole career even though he played practically no defense. Such was the state of Clemson hoops in the late 60s-early 70s.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

IMHO

Mar 16, 2014, 11:53 AM [ in reply to He'll have to play defense as well as score to start at CU ]

the team's problems are scoring, not defense. Everyone
on the team can't be built to JUST play defense. Just
like everyone isn't built to score. Which, in fact is
harder. The team needs play makers and scorers; In order
to get better. In fact, McDaniels is a mere athlete...at
this time.
IMO, there IS NO ONE..no one on the team like Devoe. Not
even close really. Hes the closest thing we had to a
scorer since KC Rivers. So, if Brad wants the team to be
better (IMO*) -he'll put Devoe into the heat, right away.
And see what he can do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yea

Mar 16, 2014, 11:48 AM [ in reply to IMO, he won't be in top 5 with everyone we have back. ]

and you might be right.
But it won't be because he isn't the best player on
the team. It would be because the staff won't see it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What? Look, I'm excited about Devoe, but he's played

Mar 19, 2014, 1:47 PM

against lower level competition all year, 2-A in NC. He's a freshman, and like all freshman, he'll be behind the learning curve. The best thing about his situation, along with Rooks and Grantham, is none of them will need to be the star. They can work themselves in to positions of contributing, all bringing much needed shooting, and not have to have the total load dumped on them. He's not Jabarri Parker
