How in the world is Miami above us?

Feb 24, 2014, 11:41 AM

I thought they said they took records into consideration. Yes Miami recruits better then us but their record the last 3 years is pathetic compared to us. Talent means nothing if you can't us it. Let's not forget that they lost to Duke and almost lost to Wake Forrest AT HOME!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They're behind us on the field...

Feb 24, 2014, 1:25 PM

but not by ALL that much. That's why they gave them the nod as the "second best roster," probably.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think Miami is anywhere close to us on the field

Apr 12, 2019, 7:01 AM

They were the most overrated team last year and it was proven to be true by the end of the year. Yes they may have more star power on their team but it has yet to translate on the field

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Completely agree

Feb 24, 2014, 2:08 PM

Miami is very similar to Clemson in the mid-2000s - a good amount of talent coupled to a complete inability to consistently perform at well on the field.

funny the make a good case for VT and GT as both programs circle the drain.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just so you know...

Feb 24, 2014, 1:24 PM

VT won 8 games last year and 11 games in 2011 when they went to the Sugar Bowl (and probably should've won). I know everybody's down on them for not being an elite team the last couple of years, but they're not quite "circling the drain" just yet. That's like saying Clemson was "circling the drain" a couple years ago because it had a losing season and an 8 win season.

GT's drain circling is a lot more apparent.

Miami and Va Text will not catch us anytime soon ...and I believe the FSU superiority gap is not as much as what the "experts" think it is.

Re: Just a stupid articles imo..& when Winston leaves we're tied

Feb 24, 2014, 1:53 PM

That may be tough just because their talent is firmly ahead of ours for the most part. They recruit at an elite, elite level. We have some elite recruiting years, but take some dips to the "good-very good" level like we did this year. Teams like FSU, Bama, etc. don't miss often when it comes to recruiting.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LMAO....hold on..catching breath...bwahahahahahah

Feb 24, 2014, 2:13 PM

OK, so you can basically dominate a team for nearly a decade, and one year (and only one year so far), that team comes back strong and that says we've "slipped behind"?? Yeah, OK, whatever floats your boat Athlon...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: LMAO....hold on..catching breath...bwahahahahahah

Feb 24, 2014, 2:18 PM

We did get 3 in a row on FSU, but over the past decade we're 5-5 against them. Hard to call a 0.500 record domination.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: LMAO....hold on..catching breath...bwahahahahahah

Feb 24, 2014, 2:26 PM

True..but hard to say that means they are back either...bye bye Winston, bye bye 90's revival....0.500 means we are equal at worst, not "slipped behind"...it's more like the spin should be that we are on their heels considering they won the MNC so have to give them that. But "slipped behind" is a bit of a stretch except for the fact we didn't show up on that game....we're also the only team that ruined Meyers 4-0 BSC record.

Feb 24, 2014, 2:32 PM [ in reply to Re: LMAO....hold on..catching breath...bwahahahahahah ]

I agree, I don't think it's a massive gap necessarily...however I think there is a gap. FSU's been recruiting like crazy the past few years (though they've always recruited very well), but having a QB like Winston to bring it all together has made the difference. As you mentioned, getting that National Championship makes a gigantic, gigantic difference even if we did get a big OB win against an elite Ohio State squad.

The wording of "slipped behind" sort of insinuates we've been slacking off at recruiting, which isn't accurate. FSU has just been recruiting at a ridiculous level.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: LMAO....hold on..catching breath...bwahahahahahah

Feb 24, 2014, 2:45 PM

Agreed...you said it about the way I would there....guess that's what urks me...seeing "slipped behind" is like saying that just because Winston came in and finally brought it together for Fl State means Clemson slipped. No, means they finally found the missing piece to their puzzle. Just like we might have done just the same with Watson, or Kelly, and some of the top recruits we just signed...won't know till September.

Though they did win the MNC, that's just one year...now if they continue to dominate the field, then it's safe to say we've "slipped behind" again lol. Not quite sure one year says that though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: LMAO....hold on..catching breath...bwahahahahahah

Feb 24, 2014, 2:48 PM

For sure. A guy like Watson could be the difference in our system. It's hard to scoff at our season though, especially since we were 2-2 against the Top 10 and the two teams we lost to finished #1 & #4 in the nation.

I think one thing that's almost definitely skewing the perception of Clemson vs Florida St is just how horrible that game was for us this year. If it had been a respectable score, people likely would have viewed us differently even with the loss to South Carolina.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU pulled ahead maybe, but CU didn't slip behind

Feb 24, 2014, 6:08 PM [ in reply to Re: LMAO....hold on..catching breath...bwahahahahahah ]

Same result, different connotation. FSU get Winston, which when combined with what, 6 turnovers mostly unforced, ensured them of a victory over us. Their recruiting is a step above ours, but it's not like we're The Little Sisters of the Poor.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Soooo, Clemson has less talent but better coaching?

"I've played multiple sports and would bet any amount that I'm still more athletic than you at this present time...."

This article makes no sense at all. We're far better than Miami.

Feb 24, 2014, 2:49 PM

Virginia Tech has to be considered the third best roster in that span. Plus they own Miami. And Miami hasn't even played for an ACC crown since joining the league. Only by looking at some recruiting ranking could you make such a claim that their roster is better than ours. And even then its a weak argument. I prefer to see how a roster performs on the field.

Let's take a look since 2008, Canes are 45-31 overall and 27-21 in ACC play. Clemson is 54-21 in that span and 34-14 in the ACC. Also Miami has only finished ranked once (#19) in that span. Clemson finished ranked in 4 of those 6 years.

Also of note, Miami hasn't won a bowl since the 2006 MPC Computer's Bowl. Anybody still think we aren't leaps and bounds better than Miami? There is a reason 80,000+ show up @ Death Valley while significantly fewer attend UM games.

It's not even close. Go Tigs!

Re: FB Update: Athlon ranks Clemson #3 best ACC football roster

Feb 24, 2014, 7:36 PM

This ranks team talent based according to #'s from one publication: 24/7 sports. The ranking is strictly based on the average (in bold) team recruiting ranking given by 24/7 over a five year span. First thing to note is that there are 4-5 major recruiting publications out there, and they usually differ a bit. You would want to get an average of say the top five recruiting rankings out there to make this more legitimate.

Recruiting rankings are nice, but it doesnt always equate to success... it takes a solid overall program (athletes, coaches, admin, student support/fanbase,boosters/funding/facilities. etc...) to win consistently.

Recruiting class rankings are just a general gauge of incoming talent, nothing more. Its how the players develop and mesh their talents withing the framework of the team concept which makes for a winner. A consistent winner is the culmination of efforts by all those involved with the program.
Recruiting well consistently is definitely a key factor of the equation, but the # of stars doesn't guarantee you one player will come in and develop and produce better than another. Look at guys like Spencer Shuey and Andre Branch, who were both 2-3 star guys and ended up becoming ballers. Clemson has been getting enough talent to the point where they are a deep enough team to win consistently and beat the best out there. Clemson is 5-5 over the last ten years against FSU and FSU gets top 5 classes seemingly every year...There are a lot of talented athletes out there, many of which fly under the radar until they develop in a college setting...Clemson has done a good job of identifying solid young men who have plenty of talent to work with.

Clemson has NOT slipped behind FSU

Feb 24, 2014, 8:08 PM

FSU has charged ahead of EVERYONE.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The article was very complimentary toward Clemson

Feb 25, 2014, 12:00 PM

It factually stated that their source (24/7) ranks Clemson as having had the 3rd best recruiting class average over the past 4 years, but essentially the same as Miami.

Miami hasn't won like Clemson has, but they have been trending very well during these 4 years and if they continue, they will have the best opportunity to be the 3rd highest ranked team in the ACC. This serves Clemson, FSU and the ACC very well.

If Miami develops a QB this year, they will likely play in the ACC CG. We will know what their year looks like when they open the season at Louisville.

If they were in our Division, it would make it more difficult for both Clemson and FSU to make it to the CG.
