?? about the 0:23 mark

Did anyone ever hear what was going on at that play when he slowed and stepped out of bounds? I understand running out of bounds, but it looked like he stopped playing about 2 yards early. After the play he showed some emotion - either excitement b/c it was a good gain and a 1st down or frustration b/c he didn't get those 2 xtra yards. As you can see in the other plays, he is full steam ahead all the time - whether running routes, blocking or bulling into a safety like a fullback - so that 0:23 play looks odd.
Man oh man; we are going to miss him. After the Orange Bowl, I asked the wife what she thought about having another kid so we could name it Sammy or Samantha. She didn’t go for it. I guess that is what I get for marrying a UNC-CH grad.

I think he was hurting on that play and was frustrated that

he could not take on the defender like he normally can and knew that if he wasn't hurting it could have been a much bigger gain.

I thought it looked like he slipped right before he let up hence the reason for the frustration. If he could have kept speed I think the defender would not have been able to get the angle on him and force him out of bounds.

That was my hypothesis as well. However, the fact that (1) he sure didn't play like he was hurt the rest of the game and (2) we didn't hear about it for the rest of the game would be some refuting evidence.
I watched it several more times, and the only other explanation that I can come up with is that he was expecting to cut back behind #37 towards the center of the field, but then realized that #26 was closing in on him, preventing him from do that. The frustration must have been from seeing a wide open field that he just couldn't get to.

With all due respect to Nuk (and he was a GREAT one),

Sammy in his freshman and junior years was incomparable.
The way he grabs a ball out of the air in mid-stride and turns on that second gear after the catch just defies description.
Nuk made some incredible contested catches, even better than Sammy. But Sammy's grab and go was just poetry in motion.
