New Story: Williams not short on talent

Jan 28, 2014, 9:02 AM

Williams not short on talent

Linebacker Jalen Williams was back on Clemson's campus this past weekend, and he told TigerNet that he is committed to Clemson more than ever. What does he say about his height? What did Brent Venables tell Williams about earning a spot? Full Story »

Jeff Davis was 6'-0......How'd that work out ?

Jan 28, 2014, 9:13 AM

Like they say....it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

Keith Adams ... 5'11" body ... w/ a 6'3" heart.

Jan 28, 2014, 9:19 AM

"The Termite" showed us exactly what an undersized LB with a huge heart can accomplish at Clemson.

Jan 28, 2014, 9:20 AM

They can't all be 5 stars. Think this guywill be a player at clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep just look at G. Jarett. He's considered short for a DT

Jan 28, 2014, 9:21 AM [ in reply to Jeff Davis was 6'-0......How'd that work out ? ]

yet there is no greater run stopper on our team and possibly the ACC. Even those almighty UGA, SC, OSU OLs couldn't move him and inch.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly ... these star ratings are heavily weighted toward

Jan 28, 2014, 9:35 AM

things that can be judged on a scale, a stop watch, or a tape measure. Of course those things are important all things being equal, but you can't measure "heart" and determination that way, so frequently the guy who is an inch or two too short in stature gets passed by in favor of the guy who "Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" once he gets to college.

Cue video of Clowney - great physical attributes,

Jan 28, 2014, 9:54 AM

but his head/heart wasn't in it this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Anthony Simmons - 6'0", in my opinion the best LB

Jan 28, 2014, 11:06 AM [ in reply to Jeff Davis was 6'-0......How'd that work out ? ]

we ever had. Led the Seattle Seahawks in tackles 3 straight years.

Re: Anthony Simmons = speed

Jan 29, 2014, 11:03 AM

According to his bio, Simmons ran a 4.28 and a 4.34 forty-yard dash for scout Larry Greenlee. His speed was part of the reason Simmons was selected in the first round (15th overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks.

Kieth Adams 2.0

Jan 28, 2014, 9:33 AM

I live in Blythewood 1.5 from the stadium. He's for real. Keith Adams is one of my all time favorite D players and he's very similar. Don't need height at LB, just power and speed. He'll be special, no doubt.

Re: Keith Adams story- not mine

Jan 28, 2014, 9:49 AM

Someone here told of Keith coming by his house to pick up a sofa for a used furniture store he was working with. This poster offered to help him and he said not thanks and picked the thing up and carried it out by himself very easily.

As a Redskins fan, he is reminding me of London...

Jan 28, 2014, 10:10 AM

London Fletcher.

Underrated but has spent 14 years in the NFL with 1 superbowl ring (Rams), and multiple Pro-Bowl trips.

Went to a small school, so that is very different, but London is not a prototypical LB. He's shorter, but full of heart and Captain of the D.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Adams might've been 5'8". Reggie

Jan 28, 2014, 10:28 AM

Herring called him The Terminitor bc he was so small in size but a terror on the field

Possible Future One - - Two Punch

Jan 28, 2014, 10:50 AM

Jalen Williams and Kendall Joseph
Both on the short side but could be good together
like peanutbutter and jelly. LOL

Re: Possible Future One - - Two Punch

These players have so much similarity in their playing style. Great leverage backers, aggressive, physical, and very strong. Both reminds me of Ray Lewis while playing. However, Ray Lewis is 6'1 in statue. Training under coach BV will lead these two guys along with the other young LBs to an outstanding future at the position. Nothing less. Because producing LBs is what coach BV do best.

Could be the future version of Bubba Brown and Hall of Famer Randy Scott. Under sided, but true LBs whom were tackling machines back in the day.

Jefff Bostic was considered undersized,

Jan 28, 2014, 12:37 PM

both in height and weight, but there was no doubt he had the heart and the chip on his shoulder to succeed, both in college and in the NFL...4 Super Bowls and 3 wins.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If it's about size, don't forget Bubba Brown. From what I

Jan 28, 2014, 12:45 PM

saw, he had to be one of the hardest hitting guys to ever play for Clemson. He hit like a 12 gauge slug from 5 feet away.

Not a Clemson guy, but what about Sam Mills, Jr. (God rest his soul). 5'9" of dynamite. I'd say he had a pretty successful NFL career.

I don't get the grey shirt thing

Jan 28, 2014, 11:06 PM

Seems like we'd give Yeargin a scholarship if he chooses us. So we're not offering Williams a full scholarship because we don't have a spot or because we're not 100% sure about him?

Re: I don't get the grey shirt thing

Pretty interesting a 3 star is getting a gray shirt. There was a time when our recruiting classes were full of 2 & 3 stars on full scholly.
