Or, was it in 2012? Saying, that's alot of extra $ for getting ahead of that smaller ACC school up the road IMO.
$90 million to about $68 million I believe I read.

does the figure that lightbulb bill presents as the difference in accrued monies include gamecock club donations?? If not, donations from IPTAY and the gamecock club are probably "a wash"....if the $22 million figure does contain gamecock club donations, I'd guess IPTAY donations would cut into that figure somewhat although certainly not to tune of $22 million.
and deroberts makes some good points about facilities: I've not taken a personal tour of their weight room or lockerroom facilities, but their stadium is an ugly eyesore and not particular accomodating or "fanfriendly". As he points out, the chickens only recently built and instituted an academic center for their athletes and they do fund more sports than Clemson (although I dare say, if Clemson WERE to initiate an equestrian team, it would be very successful).
What do the chickens do with the extra money they receive?? Bank it in anticipation of replacing the cockroach?? Heck, they just built a new coliseum for basketball and it sits nearly as empty as the old Carolina Coliseum most nights.....just curious what they're spending the extra money on....player salaries, perhaps??...:~)
Anyone with an informed answer is invited to respond.

you called it - they're putting a lot of money into making the area around the stadium nicer. The old farmers market is very nice now, and convenient because it has cable hookups and outlets. next they will probably redo the skirt around the satdium, they have already bought part of the pbs building next door so that should be pretty big.
Eventually an indoor practice field will probably be built on the other end of the old farmers market.
That and the athletic dept. gives the school a lot more money than it used to, around 6 million last year.

I am pretty sure they have a BIGGER LED lit Repay screen over at Williams Brice than us. That is not to say that they have a better program than us..
Besides, who wants to see Cocky breaking out of his smoke filled cage while Phil Petty is up in that stupiass big screen throwing a TD pass to Brad Scott in his Clemosn office?

Their football stadium is in a bad location IMO, but they have some other athletic facilities that are better than what Clemson currently has.
Rightfully so, considering the political influence that the University of South Carolina exerts over the city of Columbia. (and the state of South Carolina for that matter)
I'm not saying it has all been done ethically, (or even legally) if you are trying to state the case for economic equality for the two institutions, but it does make sense considering the University of South Carolina's proximity to where the political decisions are made.

That area where the stadium is really not so bad. It is at the state fair, really nice condos have sprung up all around and once they bought the area's farmer market and added Gamecock Park...it is really pretty nice. It is so close to I77, they move traffic pretty good. I agree Death Valley is greener, and very peaceful, but Williams Brice is getting better every year. Student housing is taking over the bad areas which use to dominate the area. Give them five more years and you will have to really try hard to find fault.

As long as it is located where it is now, it is a long way from their campus.
That makes it difficult to get to as a student, and adds to the terrible parking in Columbia.

It also points out the need for Clemson to have better lobbying so that they get as much financial assistance as they can. (as they will always be 2nd on the list of priorities in the state due to geography)

and initially, I was opposed to Clemson becoming a private institution. But, when one considers the ever-shrinking percentage of financial support our University receives from this state (its only around 15%)---and lots of other considerations, I believe going private is an avenue Clemson should explore throroughly.

There's a couple things I think the university could do
Dec 27, 2013, 7:11 PM
|
|
1. Increase enrollment- not popular with a lot of people because Clemson's relatively small size is part of what makes it special but more students will in turn mean more alumni and higher attendance, merchandise sales, etc.
2. Have more post-graduate programs. I understand Clemson doesn't have the location or even the mission for a medical or law school but there's no reason we can't have a vet school and expand graduate schools in existing fields. Clemson has the second smallest grad school enrollment in the ACC (Wake is last) which hurts because alumni with higher degrees make more money.
3. One thing I've been happy about is not wasting money on sports nobody cares about. We have a limited olympic sports program and that's ok because do we really need to spend money on women's field hockey and fencing (both of which unc has). We've historically been very competitive in all our olympic sports and no need to change that.
Just my two cents

Its my understanding, Clemson approached key members of the SC legislature about the possibilities of developing a vet school and on two separate occasions, were turned down flat and advised that opposition to Clemson expansion was supported by such virulent anti-Clemson legislators as the powerful (and alcoholic) Mendel Rivers from the Lowcountry who frequently made his intentions towards Clemson public knowledge.

include Gamecock Club money. IPTAY isn't part of the athletic department but the Gamecock Club is at USC. Jim Holderman made that power grab back in the 80' and when the president of the Gamecock Club fought it he was moved to the USC paint department..... He is a former USC football player and he was running the paint department at USC over seeing dorm painting........... The number between USC and Clemson is very small.... Clemson has a huge amount of cash on hand right now..... If you include athletic department and IPTAY money together Clemson has more cash on hand than anytime in it's history... Plus a lot less debt than USC.....

Dec 27, 2013, 8:59 PM

Financial relationship?
It's interesting you don't count iptay funding. I tried googling it but came up with a shakin the south land article. It just confused me because it lists iptay dues as revenue for iptay. However, ticket sales are listed as revenue for the AD.
How does that work? Don't you buy tickets through iptay?

But if CU is pulling in 70 $ a year in football revenue then I fail to see the worry. All the advantage I see for the Dirtpeckers is that they get to plant a few more Palmetto trees out in the warehouse trainyard for the homeless people to pee on. Honestly , they had an ounce of sense they would invest some of that extra cabbage in the relocation of their "football stadium" to a place that isnt positioned between abject poverty and hopelessness.
