So there would never be another Steve Fuller, or Banks McFadden or CJ Spiller.
But the number would be there for a #4 or #28 WR. Makes more sense to allow the number while retaining the special memory of a man.

I'm almost positive this issue actually came up a number of years ago and Steve was not happy about it.
Think it was when we signed Anthony Downs and he wanted #4.
Maybe I imagined it, but I don't think so.
Anyone else recall ??? Whatever it was back then, obviously it has been put to bed ... amicably or otherwise.

His casually confident manner of speaking is refreshing in the modern "coachspeak" era. All of our "big 3" coaches have a very refreshing repertoire with the media. I for one love this time at Clemson...considering the last 20 yrs of coaching mis-hits we have slogged through.

Bad coaching from V - no spy on QB, bad coaching from Morris - why run qb when McDowell is running wild (and with only 14 carries) - 2nd year in a row, he put all the burden on Tajh when runners were doing so well! Dabo should have overruled both of them and told them to spy and to run!

jersey numbers 1-99. Even if you squeezed in 0, 00, and all single digits with and without a leading zero (ex 05, and 5) that is only 110. Subtract the "retired" ones and there are several with dupes.

just say they didn't mean it.
http://clemsonpodcasts.wordpress.com/2009/12/02/spillers-28-to-be-retired/
According to Coach Dabo Swinney, C.J. Spiller will become the third player in Clemson football history to have his number retired. Spiller’s #28 will join Tiger legends Banks McFadden (#66) and Steve Fuller (#4) as the only Tigers to have their numbers retired.
This couldn’t have happened to a better guy. Spiller has proven both on and off the field that he is deserving of such an honor. C.J. Spiller will possibly go down as the best Clemson player in the history of the program. During his senior year, he surpassed record after record, week after week and continues to impress the nation.
C.J. stands alone in the history of the NCAA with 7 career kick returns for scores. He is one of only five players to ever reach 7,000 all purpose yards. Add to that a resume full of record shattering stats and you might could argue he is one of the top college players in history.

Practice Jerseys Don't Count As Retired ----
Dec 18, 2013, 10:04 AM
|

He was wearing number 2. Alexander is not supposed to wear No.4 in any game. Unless they had some agreement as of late, that the No.4 is to be retired on offense or defense only depending on what position an outstanding player played. But he should have on another number come next season on gamedays.

I know this young man is very disappointed that he didn't get over this injury in time to have a memorable Fr. season on the field as a player, but good things come to those who wait. Stay the course, and you will get your chance to show that you will be a force to be reckoned with. I can't wait!

Anthony Downs was promised #4 but after Fuller disapproved and many fans did as well, that promise was revoked. I don't know what number A. Downs wore but if someone can show me a link indicating he wore #4 I will be surprised.
Fuller was not happy about and rightfully so.
