My Thoughts: The Pre-Game Tiger Bus Ride

Sep 3, 2013, 3:14 PM

I just watched this again for probably the 10th time and wanted to say a few things. Even as a fan who has experienced the Tigers run down the hill since I was 3 years old back in 1981, I've never really had an opportunity to see it from the perspective that ABC/ESPN covered it. It was always so exciting to see the busses pull up to the top of the hill from the stands. But seeing Saturday night's version really sent chills up my back. When Musberg mentioned he had see the Tigers run down the hill...but never from this perspective...I thought that was really cool to hear...especially coming from the person who coined the term "most exciting 25 seconds in college football" back in 1985. The fact that there were multiple things going on to really immerse you into the experience is what did it. When he used the term motorcade, it really gave you a sense of watching something very important. It really built you up with excitment while you watched the buses turn each corner, anticipating the arrival and start of the event. There were several perspectives that really were unique:

1.) Goodyear Blimp: First of all, I can't ever recall seeing a blimp at a Clemson game. So seeing the buses being loaded up while hearing the explanation of how the players are shuttled from the back side of the stadium to the front was really cool. Also seeing the Young Buses from an aerial view like that brings back memories of being a kid super excited sitting in the stands watching the tops of the buses appear through the corners of the stadium. Its like waiting for Christmas Day to come!

2.) The street corner views: With the wide angle lens that was used, it really gave you a sense of depth perception on how big the stadium is and what it feels like to not just be inside...but also on the outside. Because it is "the largest man-made structure in the western hemisphere" according to youtube. :)

3.) The Police Escort: Two motocycles and the police cars leading with sirens...it increases the sense that you're experiencing something unique and important. Plus it gives all the fans outside a heads up that its coming.

4.) The Lead Camera: The perspective of riding right in front of the lead bus as its going around the stadium really did it for me. To see it from this view really brought out my pride for Clemson and how cool it is. It made you feel like you were part of it rather than just observing from a distance.

5.) The Hill: Top of the Mountain before running into the valley. I've stood there a many of times prior and post games and the view of the stadium is great...so to be a player running up to 85,000 fans yelling just for you has just got to be an unspeakable rush.

6.) The Cannon: The only thing that could have made this entire coverage any better would have been a quick shot of the cannon itself going off...but we still got to hear it! I always loved the cannon as a kid and to see it as an adult still gives me that same feeling with my kids. Watching the camera follow the players down the hill onto the field was stunning.

7.) The Timing: the timing of the camera run down the hill with the players and the CLEMSON flags pop'ing up all the while a crowd of 85,000 chanting C-L-E-M-S-O-----N!....the timing could not have been better. I dont' think you could plan it to work out as good as it did....and to have the fireworks going off at the same time....WOW!

I'm still in awe. Just that video segment alone would make me want to commit if I was a prospect!

That is all. Go Tigers! So proud! Its a hellauva day to be a Tiger!

that coverage was worth millions in free advertising

football, just show them that clip. Who wouldn't want to go to Clemson after watching that?

Friend at work was won over to Clemson because of that

Sep 3, 2013, 3:17 PM

He grew up a lifelong Vol fan, and still is, but said he had never watched a Clemson game, except for the time they spanked the Vols in the bowl game a few years back, but that video of the Clemson tradition put a lump in his throat, and he now has a new 2nd favorite team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I really wish they would explain why it is a tradition...

Sep 3, 2013, 3:20 PM

It's not some made up Cocky in a box with piped over music stolen from an Elvis concert. Clemson started entering the stadium at the hill because it was the closest point of entry to the stadium from Fike. That's were the dressing rooms were.

When they build Memorial stadium the west endzone simply had a scoreboard there. It was only years later that Clemson started making a big entrance of it. There are some pics around of Clemson running onto the field in the 80's from the locker rooms in west endzone. I think they did that for one year and then started busing the players around the stadium to run down the hill.

News from USuC...
"Richardson was the 20th Gamecock arrested since Spurrier was hired in Nov. 2004"

Fluxus®
"As I watched the game yesterday I couldn't help but feel crushed. We beat Furman by 4 TDs, but to me it looked like we got whipped."

"George Bush, we are reliably informed by the media, has the IQ of a moron, though how he matriculated from Yale and Harvard or flew an F-106 will remain an unexplained mystery. Doubtless his father bribed the airplane to fly itself."

1973, not the 80's

Sep 3, 2013, 3:31 PM

Red Parker re-started the Hill run.......Frank Howard did it when the team's locker room was at Fike, but when they built the West endzone lockers, they ran out of there.

In 1973, Red Parker decided to get some buses and haul the team around so they could run the Hill again. They've been doing it without interruption ever since.

Sep 3, 2013, 3:37 PM

I agree! What its like to view fans outside on the streets stopping their tailgates/conversations to run out to the street and give you a thumbs up or cheer for you. It really has to be quite an incredible experience for a player. I'm getting chills just writing about it!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I heard that ESPN looked at that

Sep 3, 2013, 3:41 PM [ in reply to Only Addition might have been a camera inside Team bus.... ]

but it might have been undependable technical quality, plus they might have picked up some undesirable emotional words from some of the players, being a live broadcast.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think CBS had a camera in the team bus for the 1987 UGa

Sep 3, 2013, 4:27 PM [ in reply to Only Addition might have been a camera inside Team bus.... ]

...game. The players were all business.

Musberger did a good job covering the ride around the stadium then too.

My main takeaway from it was, as you mentioned...

Sep 3, 2013, 3:35 PM

The fact that the players are in these buses, they get out, go through one little passage, and wham!...they are on top of a sea of orange. Especially amazing at night.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Only irrational Gamecock/Bulldog fans could watch that

Sep 3, 2013, 3:45 PM

And not say "Wow, that's pretty amazing."

Only irrational Gamecock/Bulldog fans ?!?!?

Like you pointed out there were many kewl points...but I also really like the camera running down the hill with the flags and the fire works all coordinated with PERFECT timing.

I think that even helped us out! Shows we are environmentally conscious. Our students pitch in to pick up trash in the middle of a pre-game ESPN broadcast. :)

No but seriously...it was funny that he had no idea they were filming or that the motorcade was going by. He was really into picking up those beer cans!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was awesome seeing that video, talk about one

Sep 3, 2013, 3:50 PM

he!l of a recruiting video! Oh, and the game that followed was pretty good too ;)

the fact it was stopped an had to be resumed was a travesty. It isnt the only reason I have no use for Hootie but it is a key reason. the man was a boring coach who generated no excitement
