Front Page Story: New rule changes in college football could impact games

New rule changes in college football could impact games

There are several new rule changes for the 2013 football season, and those changes could have a big impact on the outcome of games, including the rule that states a player who leads with the crown of his helmet or is flagged for "targeting" receives an automatic ejection. Full Story »

While I don't agree with all of these rule changes...

I understand the arguments behind them. For all of them except the spiking rule. I have yet to hear a valid explanation for this one. anybody have any idea?

What About Stopping A Key Play?

Jul 23, 2013, 6:02 PM

There is a difference in trying to tackle
somebody to show the world how bad you are
or how good of a hitter you are....how you
want to let everybody know that you can intimidate.

Then there is that epic important moment when your
opponent is about to make a key 1st down to move the
chains to keep a drive alive or win the game. There
is that moment when the opposing player could make
that winning score where he is only 4 or 5 feet from
doing just that.

The only ways you are left to deal with it in that adrenaline heart pounding moment is to let the opposing
player score or make that crucial 1st down?
Or you can knock the crap out of him (Not To Injure)
from keeping him from scoring and making that crucial
1st down. Because a player at that moment just wants
to do his job and help his team win in a honest yet
competitve way. Tough to be a football player.

Spiking rule is stupid. Where's did 3 seconds come from?

Why not 2?

Rules are pro offense except for the spiking rule

Tough to be a nasty defender these days.

The injury rule is odd and clock management will be key

Jul 23, 2013, 10:45 PM

Let's say that there's a team that is trying to make a comeback with 9 seconds left towards the end of a play. Someone on defense can pretend to get injured and then run off 10 seconds?

Also, Les Miles is going to have trouble with these. That guy is not good with clock management. Seems like you're going to need to keep a time out handy towards the end of the game with all the different run off rules.

It clearly states that the offended team, in this case the offense, can decline the runoff. This rule change is intended to stop teams from faking injuries to stop the clock. If the offense, in your case with 9 seconds left, fakes an injury or even has a real one, the defense is the offended team and can accept the runoff and the game's over. I like the rule because I have thought injuries were faked near the end of games on several occasions.

For all of those who complain about the way Paul Johnson plays offense, look at how Saban whines about the HUNH offense and think about it. There are going to always be things you don't like about how other teams play, within the rules, but they are still within the rules, so live with it!

The last thing that I want to see is the “wussification” of college football, but something has to be done to stop situations like this … I have been a college football fan for a long time and don’t remember two situations where a Georgia player was targeted like Arron Murray in these two videos …

I would bet that every team could come up with several videos like this. It is the play of a few that will ruin it for everyone, but play like this can not continue.
