"second-round speed"? Really?

Feb 24, 2013, 10:41 PM

Sure, the ideal WR would run a 4.2 forty, but he'd also be 6'6" with long arms, great hands, a 42-inch vertical.

With all of the truly great, HOF worthy and All-Pro caliber WRs who never even ran a 4.5 forty, you'd think the phrase "second-round speed" would be reserved for much slower receivers than NUK.

No doubt

Not comparing Nuk to him, but Jerry Rice ran a 4.7 40 yard dash. There is far more to being a good NFL receiver than speed.

like 4.35 forty at the combine.

Heres the thing about speed

Feb 25, 2013, 9:10 AM [ in reply to "second-round speed"? Really? ]

Theres different types of speed with a WR. Acceleration, quickness, top speed, route running, breaks, and DB cushion. The reason Nuk burns people deep isnt because hes a jacoby ford type burner. Its because due to his incredible route running and breaks the DB cant turn his hips and run as soon in his drop as he normally does. He has to stay square a split second longer to respect any underneath routes he runs so great. Hes complete. Just not elite speed, but IMO thats not the main deal.

1 half of 1 tenth of a second in the 40 yard dash makes people giddy about the speed of a WR. But it really doesn't make a hill of beans difference. Nuk has the best hands I saw in college football this year and runs really good routes.

I don't pass out complements to Clemson players often. But I am glad to see Nuk go. He is a hell of a WR and will be a hell of a WR in the pros.

+1. Not many folks on here will be reasonable to a poster with "gamecock" in the name, but that is spot on. Stay classy

For all you youngsters out there.

There was a prolific receiver for the Seattle Seahawks back in the 80's. A white boy that couldn't outrun anyone, but he ran his routes better than anyone and didn't drop a pass. His name was Steve Largent.

When Largent retired, he held all major NFL receiving records, including: most receptions in a career (819), most receiving yards in a career (13,089), and most touchdown receptions (100), although 15 of the catches, 261 of the yards, and 3 of the touchdowns came against replacement players. He was also in possession of a then-record streak of 177 consecutive regular-season games with a reception. He also holds the distinction as the first receiver in NFL history to achieve 100 touchdown receptions in his career.

Nuk is obviously faster. But give me the guy that knows how to play the game and gets ready for every one. The ones that play off their talent will get burned.

Coach will have some words to eat if Nuke is picked in first round

Dabo just said that he wasn't predicted to go in the 1st round, but said that HE would take him in the 1st round.

You really expect a coach to come out in the media and say that he was happy to see one of his best players leave school early?

No coach is going to say that. The coach is always going to want to keep his best players for as long as possible.
