Clemson is "America's Team?"

Feb 17, 2013, 9:46 AM

That's not so far fetched.

I think everybody in the country has about had enough of ESPiN's SEC hype. I'd say Clemson has a chance to pick up a ton of fans next season. We open and close our regular season with SEC teams.

I know everybody will be watching our UGA game since it'll be the best of that weekend. I suspect that most of those who watch will be pulling for us.

I also think Clemson is the only team that has the players, offensive scheme, coaches and fans to unseat the SEC from the top. All we'll need is a little luck this year to make it all the way.

If that happens you can bet there are a ton of folks all across the country that will become Clemson fans being that everyone is fed up with ESPiN's SEC hype.

I know, that's far fetched but it's not that far fetched.

To share your thoughts with the following teams:

Stanford
Oregon
Florida State
Oklahoma

As they think the same thing. You do have valid points but there is no room for error and you have to run the table.

You'de do better just to chant SEC, SEC, SEC and get it over with.

to pull for, same as fsu, stanford, oregon, oklahoma, etc, while sec fans have 14. they are as genuinely happy for 1 of the other sec schools to win,as they are for their "own" team. i just couldn't be that way- win, lose or tie- i am a clemson fan. not a conference fan, of ANY conference.!

SGT., always enjoy your posts but your opinion is one thing

Feb 17, 2013, 6:45 PM

that is holding the ACC back IMO. I am a 100% Clemson fan but that doesn't stop me from pulling for other ACC teams to beat OOC teams. Other teams winning helps our strength of schedule and that is one of the most important determinging factors in being selected for the playoffs. So no I don't thinks that loving Clemson excludes anyone pulling for other ACC teams to be successful.

All the SEC teams pull for other conference teams so it won't hurt when they lose to them. They may then say 'well, we lost to an SEC team so the loss doesn't hurt so badly.'

You're not fooling anyone but yourself. Now go away and console yourself with delusion.

Feb 17, 2013, 1:10 PM

What you lack in intelligence you make up for in imaturity. If you don't want to be compared to stupid people don't copy their stupid expressions. America's team is a fallacy. An average NC State fan may want to see us beat Bama if we are fortunate enough to play them for a title, but if we roll into Raleigh 10-0 next year their not gonna give us any quarter because we hold the hope of the nation. Fans root for the interests of their own teams period. Unless your head coach is the leader of the free world and your uni colors are cammo ,with alternate road dessert cammo, you're not America's team.

If we make it far enough to play one of the SEC teams you can count on everybody but SEC fans pulling for us.

Feb 17, 2013, 12:52 PM

Liked what I saw out of the defense against LSU. Not so much in games against FSU, NCSU (luckily, their defense was worse than ours), and SCAR.

Re: If "a little luck" equates to "better defensive effort" then

Feb 17, 2013, 1:40 PM

Thank you! Yes, we played great defense v. LSU, outstanding even. However, as you said not great defense against FSU, NCS, and SC. Our offense always sputters v. the #####, Tajh can't even pass for what?.....130 yds? We have to be consistently better on both sides of the ball (I won't even mention special teams snafus), for us to go for the big enchilada. The UGA game will be huge for the Tigers as far as the national perception is concerned.

Re: Are you dumb enough to believe that...coot?***

Feb 17, 2013, 9:27 PM

It's true enough, but doesn't really matter. A lot of people know Clemson as a pretty good school, but just don't know where it is.

Having been outside of the state for more than a generation, I see how people can view the states of South Carolina, Louisiana and Mississippi as basically the same - last or next to last in education, poverty, health care, etc. Clemson doesn't fit the stereotype people have for SC and the other poorer states. I was shocked at a conference in SD a few years ago when a speaker brought up the "corridor of shame." Hopefully the perception is slowly changing, but the tea-bag mentality in that state is really holding it back.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am proud to be a South Carolinian.....

Feb 17, 2013, 9:33 PM

and am ashamed of anyone from this state, or anyone who went to Clemson, who will not gladly say the same. But that's just me...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I am proud to be a South Carolinian.....

Feb 17, 2013, 9:48 PM

I'm proud of most parts of South Carolina and Clemson, but realistic enough to understand the shortcomings. If you don't recognize the problems, you can never fix them. #### Riley started a good thing by increasing teacher pay and starting to fix the schools. Carroll continued that and then brought in a lot of high-value industry, but almost all of the governors since have dropped the ball.

It's not directly connected, but it's frustrating to see all of the storefronts now that say "payday loans," "title loans," etc. I see sharks taking advantage of poor people when I go to SC for visits and nobody doing anything about it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Archie, your anger is misplaced....

Feb 17, 2013, 9:55 PM

I see why you might be frustrated living elsewhere but you must realize we're playing the hand we have been dealt. S.C. is a great place, with great people. Our political "leaders" seem all too willing to ##### out the state.....but we have been crippled since 1865 by factors beyond our control. Until the playing field is leveled I do not believe things will change. Don't give up on us....we're trying.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Archie, your anger is misplaced....

Feb 17, 2013, 10:29 PM

It's not anger. Just some disappointment that when I go to a familiar place, the better stores are gone and the streets are in bad shape. Walmart is to blame for some of it, but closing factories and such are the larger problem. There are whole swaths of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey that are in just as bad a shape. I drive through some pretty run-down towns every week, so I realize it is more a national problem.

SC has a lot of potential besides being a golfing destination. Those governors in the 70s and 80s did so much good. Clemson has a big role to play in it as the high-tech university in the state and you see good results here and there. But the playing field is more than level now - wages are low, taxes are low, real estate prices are low and SC receives about 2 dollars back for every dollar it sends to the federal government. The frustration is in that I know it can be so much better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The federal government is in control of education not SC.

Feb 17, 2013, 10:24 PM [ in reply to Re: Are you dumb enough to believe that...coot?*** ]

They tax you, then give the money back to the states and tell them how to spend it.

Authority=responsibility=accountability. You can blame the Tea Party mentality if you want but if you want the real culprit blame the feds.

Re: The federal government is in control of education not SC.

Feb 17, 2013, 10:32 PM

Not sure what you mean. Schools are pretty much under local control everywhere. And SC gets back about twice the money it sends to the federal government.

Most tea party people don't actually pay any federal income tax, but for some reason think that they pay a lot.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The federal government is in control of education not SC.

Feb 17, 2013, 10:48 PM

Throwing money at a problem is not a fix. The mentality that paying teachers more and building new schools doesn't address the problem of education in southern states.

Giving teachers raises doesn't make the kids learn. Putting them in new school buildings doesn't either.

The problem with the educational system all over this country is that the states are chasing federal money. They force kids to attend school. At first that sounds great. "MAKE EM LEARN." That's not what happens when you force kids to school.

These kids that don't want to go to school dumb down the classes and slow down the progress of those who want to learn. The states get paid per student per day. Go figure.

If your lawn is full of dandelions you can mow the grass and they'll disappear for a day or two. They'll come back just as strong and lively as ever.

When you want to rid your lawn of dandelions you have to dig them out by the roots.

Big schools, big business. Business is good but it's ruined our educational system.

Re: The federal government is in control of education not SC.

Feb 17, 2013, 11:06 PM

In some southern states, teachers are really not well paid. Texas is one of the worst.

In the northern states, teachers are much better paid. In my district, a teacher with an MEd and 10-20 years experience can make $100k. Now, I do pay high real estate taxes as a result, but that higher salary attracts more people into the profession. And the point of paying more is to encourage more people to go into teaching. Another effect of the higher salaries is that there are also a lot of distressed school districts that are being systematically shut down by the state. It's complicated.

Re: The federal government is in control of education not SC.

Feb 17, 2013, 11:10 PM [ in reply to Re: The federal government is in control of education not SC. ]

Oh, for dandelions, I spot spray with a systemic like Roundup. It's more economical if you buy the concentrated stuff and dilute. It might take a few applications of the diluted stuff, but you are less likely to end up with large spots of dead grass that way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The federal government is in control of education not SC.

sec teams #1-through about 4- ('bama, lsu, uga and fla.) have been out recruiting everyone for years. you have a few kids that state they want to play in the best conf, but most just want the shot of winning a championship, just about any div 1 aq school will give you that, if you take care of business. if you lose 1 game, most teams still have a shot ( depending on the # of undefeated teams), 2 losses- yes, the sec top 2 and a couple of other teams- and i would like to think that clemson and fsu, maybe va. tech, have this shot. so, if a kid choose not to come to clemson because he wants to be a part of the sec, i think it's more because of relaxed standards and such, than it is athletic competition.

Re: Re: The federal government is in control of education not SC.

Feb 18, 2013, 12:27 AM

Like Archie said, the point of raises isn't to make the teachers teach better. We must start attracting higher quality teachers to SC schools. The problem is, the areas in SC where that is a truly significant issue are also places where not many bright, motivated 25-35 year olds would want to live. Channel the 25-35 year old you...now, raise your hand if you would take $40k to teach at Dreher HS over $46k to teach and live in Kingstree. Even though all of you raised your hands, we still have to figure out a way to make it work. Organizations like Teach for America is a great place to start. Need to start getting more state dollars into similar programs.

With the mindset of today's society being that EVERYONE can earn and should be entitled to a 4 year college education, public school admins have been foolishly placing far too much emphasis on imploring means to assist students in that pursuit. There is absolutely no shame in earning a technical degree these days, and someone needs to do a better job of conveying that to message to our students, teachers, school administrators, state leaders, and federal government. No Child Left Behind, O'bama's student loans...all "right-hearted, wrong-headed" endeavors. (Yes, Archie, I did a little research re: our admissions standards convo and stole that from one of the 2007 articles, ha.)
