I am not an expert but I think that preferred walk-ons are at the head of the line for scholarships when they come available.

As I understand it they are pretty much automatically on the team - just not on scholarship. A normal student has quite a few hoops to jump through to become an actual walk-on. I think the regular walk-on process is somewhat discouraging to keep every Jimmy and Joe on campus from trying out and clogging the process.

Jstone D329 - “ It’s ok to want a coaching change”

1-29: Brad Brownell road record against ranked ACC opponents
142, 161, 294, 307, 293, 166, 225, 180, 260, 164, 141, 72, 68 - assist rankings amongst all D1 programs during Brownell's tenure

A preferred walkon can dress out every home game

and may travel once-that's the main difference-a walk on does not. A walk on could beat out a preferred walk on for a scholarship-you never know how fast they are going to develop. A preferred walk on gets every thing a scholarship player gets except the money (tuition, etc) including a locker and number.

a preferred "walk-on" is a prospective player who is not offered a scholarship, but who, in the coaching staff's opinion, could very likely contribute to the football program. a preferred "walk-on" differs from a "walk-on" in that a preferred "walk-on" has a very good possibility to make the team. every school that holds tryouts for walk-ons, gets many kids who cannot make the team, but want to say to others that they tried out.
