Nov 29, 2012, 11:57 AM

Wilkins applauds addition of Louisville to ACC

Board of Trustees Chairman David Wilkins said the ACC's addition of Louisville was decisive, and said the league is adding strong football and basketball programs. He also said he applauds the conference's efforts in suing Maryland over the $53 million buyout. Photo: Jamie Rhodes-US PRESSWIRE Full Story »

deadlock in the first vote and then they voted the next morning and were able to sway the basketball schools to vote for Louisville? Decisive?

Barker sounds firmly entrenched with Swoffy IMHO.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What I am suggesting is

Nov 29, 2012, 12:15 PM

That they are content to be stuck in a confernece that cannot complete financially, nor athletically, and as such will remain irrelevant on the national football stage. The care more about the academic side and apparently do not understand the monetary downfall of such short-sighted thinking. THEY approved the absurdly high buyout. THEY are pushing for sticking it to Maryland for actually having the balls to want to better their university, THEY are praising Swofford and the ACC for doing such a fine job with this league, THEY are saying Clemson is happy in the ACC and its current state.

Clemson football program. We are watching a slow death of Clemson football. I think that even if FSU decided to leave the ACC for the more lucrative Big 12 in order to be able to compete with the Florida Gator's coming bonanza payday (new SEC TV deals plus SEC Network), I think it's very likely we'd stick it out with the ACC, even if Virginia Tech and NC State left for the SEC. And I think that VT and NC State will be gone by this time next year. With the new SEC riches, they will be able to absorb the $50 million penalty. This Wilkens article is depressing.

Nov 29, 2012, 1:41 PM

If all that were to take place, I would highly doubt Clemson would just sit around and stay in the ACC. This is just a show face and smile about what is happening due to an obligation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And THEY know the only way we can really make our message

Nov 29, 2012, 12:46 PM [ in reply to What I am suggesting is ]

heard is to quit supporting Clemson with our contributions, which most won't do because we love the school.

That's administrators for you. They play emotional blackmail by convincing us that if we don't support their ill-founded decisions then we don't support the school.

And Wilkins is a life member of the board.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's not really true. FSU let Bowden run their program

into the ground. A number of coaches did the same at Miami. VT had an awful year as did GT.

It has nothing to do with Swofford or Barker for that matter.

Face it, we're not getting an invite to the SEC

Nov 29, 2012, 1:47 PM [ in reply to What I am suggesting is ]

Either bolt to the BIG 12 or help strengthen the conference you're in. Should they be sabatoging the ACC with a future plan of bolting to the BIG12?

What I am saying is that you and everyone else's criticisms of Barker being a part of bringing in ND and Louisville, and the $53mil buyout doesn't make sense. Other ACC schools may be able to go to the SEC, like VT, but we DO NOT. We have to keep the teams in we want, get rid of the ones we don't and bring in better teams. The ACC isn't in a great bargaining position for schools, so Louisville is a good get.

Its not that I mind LU, they are fine but I just wish we had gotten WV last year.

Its just a fact that our TV contract is well below the other conferences for the next 10 years. We will suffer because of it if something doesnt change.

Replacing UMD w/ UofL is an upgrade.

Nov 29, 2012, 12:35 PM

Whether anyone likes anything ever done by the ACC before or not, this was a move that fell into their lap and they acted quick on it.

They replace a crappy broke UMD program with a solvent good UofL program. With ND being promised a spot(not that they'll ever take it), you know technically ND has 2 spots, one for them and who they want to bring with them if they have to join, the ACC was stuck at 14 with no away of adding another FB program. UMD bolting gave them that chance.

UofL on the schedule every year is a lot better than UMD.

Let's not forget UofL was also part of the BIG 12 rumors(that whole mythological eastern division) and they got em.

And yes holding UMD to their contract is the right thing to do. What is UMD gonna do ? They play this year and next year under that contract, are they gonna refuse the ACC checks ? Cash the checks and they don't have a leg to stand on in court.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nov 29, 2012, 12:38 PM

I still wonder if there might have been a chance to snag Penn State. If our office was wise they'd have at least asked if there was interest in it. It really would have shown the world that the ACC is for real to trade MD for PSU with the BIG.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The Big 10 pays almost 50% more money than the ACC does.***
