Also the quotations around "what's best for Clemson". I trust that they really will do what is in the best interest for Clemson. All of us are nervous about, ARE we waiting to long or what and this and that. I personally don't think or believe we are going to be on the out side looking in.

Really helpful comment. The ACC under the leadership of Swofford, has self-destructed as far as football goes. Unless we bolt to somewhere, forget Clemson football as we all used to love it. But hexx, that's been gone for years. Are we really going to become a basketball power?? Good luck with that scenario. It's over. And Dabo, although being a really nice guy, is a great coach???

L A W suits can and will tie things up for a very long time. They (TDP/BOTs) are doing EXACTLY what they are suppose to do. Keeping their mouths shut before and after its all said and done. And they (TDP/BOTs) aren't the ones that are the Idiots. But, the ones that think or believe that they should tell what they know. Those are the real Idiots!!! Personally, I don't care nothing about what's going on in secret or in the public eye. I only care about Clemson and about Clemson being unharmed after its all said and done. I'm hoping that after the BOTs meeting. We will be reading that Clemson has issued a statement to the acc that Clemson intends on looking for greener pastures. Then I will relax and wait for the all's well ending well for Clemson University....

Why would the BOT discuss rumors?

Wouldn't they be just the group that would discuss realignment, not rumors of realignment?

i feel it will be the latter rather than the former. no BOT is going to say "we are out of the ACC" without having a conference to go to.

Evidently, he was just too ambiguous. He made no statement supporting the ACC but still some folks just refuse to see what is happening.

Big time competition, which is just what we need. We don't have a big-time coach---love Dabo as I do as a great individual, he's won't get it done here. This a top 15 program. He is not anywhere a top 15 coach. What other top program would hire him? None. It is what it is.

The only thing I'm wondering about is the advisory board's report. Have they had time to do a comprehensive evaluation or not?

The only way Swofford stays through this is Plylers possible image of the ACC in 2014 Mickey Plyler's Bog on the rumors ends as follows
Most of this is still a long shot but it is possible that Clemson, FSU, Georgia Tech and Miami head to Big 12, Virginia Tech and NC State head to SEC and Notre Dame does not join the ACC.
The Potential ACC in 2014: Duke Wake Forest North Carolina Virginia Maryland Boston College Pittsburgh UConn Rutgers Syracuse
Its a real possibility.

Not sure SEC will go to 16 that quick. I think they will test the waters with 14 for few years unless there is a stampede by other conferences.

Phillips dismisses Big 12 rumors

During a national radio interview this afternoon, Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips dismissed rumors that his department is planning a move to the Big 12 Conference.
Various Internet reports have speculated that Clemson and Florida State would leave the Atlantic Coast Conference to join the Big 12.
While appearing on Sirius/XM’s “College Sports Today? with Mark Packer, Phillips asserted that he has had no contact with the Big 12.
Clemson’s last conference move was in 1953, when it left the Southern Conference with six other schools to form the ACC.

and a sure sign that SOMETHING is or has happened. If this was just an update, Barker or TDP would just call the Board members individually. Boards don't usually meet just for information or advisement. They meet for action items.
If I recall correctly, the TAMU and Mizzou Boards met to give the AD's the power to make the decision. Then it was basically "rubber stamp."

The big question now is, do we have a B12 rubber stamp. Or do Clemson have to order one

Wilkins has painted himself in an interesting corner
May 23, 2012, 2:24 PM
|

This is now the second time he has publicly stated that Clemson has had no direct or indirect discussions with or about the Big 12 - to his knowledge. He implies that as far as he knows nobody working at Clemson or anyone hired by someone working for Clemson has had any talks with the Big 12/Big 12 reps.
So, if there have been talks - then what is the Chairman doing? Which of his employees is running around talking/negotiating something as significant as changing conference affiliation and he is completely ignorant of it going on. This is not the "Steinbrenner" that Micky's puff piece blog makes him Wilkins out to be.
Or maybe Wilkins knows completely what is going on, and he can't bring himself to say "no comment." So does Wilkins not have control of his employees or is he a bald face liar. Either way - his credibility is shot.

but not the Big XII.
Perhaps through TCU, which technically isn't a member yet. they might be a clearing house for contacts, which would explain their AD's statement this morning.

Board members wouldn't know those kinds of conversations

those would be operational in nature. Good Boards don't get into the day to day management. By the time something gets to the Board as an action item, it has been vetted.
It is very common for the Board to not directly know about these types of things prior to a formal meeting. And most good Boards want it that way.
Boards don't have "employees" in the organization they advise.

Boards are responsible for the organization, the board

hires the president, the board approves the hiring of the AD. Being fairly familiar with how private company boards and large non-profit boards (although not university boards) the board chairman is kept in the loop on something this big - the whole board may not know, but the chairman does. I stand by my statement. If there have been talks and Wilkins has not been advised, then he has a problem with his direct report - the president of the university. If he does know, then he is just lying like is all too common. Not saying that he would or should know all the details. But he should know that someone is at least "in contact."

I report to a Board

and there are numerous things that the Board and specifically my Chairman don't know the details of until we bring it to them. Sure sometimes its a "wink-wink" agreement for us to explore certain options, but its best to keep the Board out of these kinds of details until you are ready to publicly present it.
The Chairman obviously knows we are exploring all options because of the creation of that Advisory Board. But whether anyone has "actually made contact" would be beyond what he should know until it is presented.

are many, many small operational items that the board doesn't get involved in. There are even things I don't know about until I get the meeting or the email with the reports to be presented. There are even major things that the rank and file board members don't know about until the meeting. But, normally the board executive committee is in the loop on major issues - at least the outline and setting policy.
But a change in conference affiliation is so significant the chairman should at least know if "contact has been made" if all these "rumors" have the deal being ready for the signing. Again that is the threshold Wilkins has set. Mere knowledge of contact being made.
If nothing else, when the Chairman called the meeting, he would have to ask the question - "any contact?" unless he is trying to be intentionally ignorant, which is pretty unprofessional in my book (even for the President of the United States). I have ethics issues with this culture of "intentional ignorance." Seems pretty darn close to negligence in my book.

I guess we have a difference of opinion on "contact"

there are many reasons, legal and otherwise, to keep Directors/Trustees out of those types of actions. Primarily, you don't want the Board to get sued in a situation like this if they have prior knowledge of contacts and negiotations. Especially if there is an unofficial alliance between organizatiosn like Clemson and FSU.
I'm 100% sure he knows if we are in the exploratory stage which can mean a whole lot of things. But whether or not anyone at Clemson had any "contact" with anyone that could represent the B12 is beyond what i would be comfortable telling my Board Chairman..especially if they already gave me the approval to explore such options. Its not intentionally ignorant, is seperation of duties between a Board and a staff.
But the "any contact" question should be the first thing brought up to the Board at the meeting. If after Thursday he still "isn't aware" then I'll agree with you.

boards relationship to their organization. If the Clemson Board of Trustees really is merely an advisory board and is not the organization charged with fiducary responsibility to the school, then sure. They are merely advisory and fundraiers, and what they think really doesn't legally mean anything since they have no authority. No need to get them involved until the deal is done - and even then it is just a courtesy since even if they vote it down, it is merely a non-authoritative advisory board vote.

In all these discussion, it seems to be an accepted assumption that Clemson is a football power. Really? Barely beat Wofford, which had escaped by the skin of their teeth week before from that perennial power Prespreterian College. Barely escaped being defeated by Wake Forest. Crushed by a mediocre N.C. State team; barely beat an awful Maryland team. And then sustained the most humiliating defeat in Clemson history in the Orange Bowl. Maybe I'm missing something, but who would want us? Maybe the Southern Conference?

How does the "Advisory Board" that was setup a while back fit into all this? IS this board doing the legwork so that the AD/Pres & BOT can claim ignorance? LOL... I'm subscribing to the "where there is smoke, there is fire" line of thinking here. Maybe the advisory board is in talks with the TCU & WVU people (Oliver Luck maybe) and coordinating this whole thing, so there are 3-4 degrees of seperation for each side. Since TCU and WVU aren't BIG 12 members yet, plausible deniability is there.
BOOM!
That's my take.

Why do I feel like we're going to hitch our wagon to a dying ACC. Clearly Swofford tried to make us a football conference by adding FSU, VT, and UM but that failed. It's time to read the writing on the wall and move on to greener pastures. Last time I checked there's no grass on a basketball court.

to speed, if not in front of them, with regards to their possible conference movement. It is absolutely vital that CU be proactive with their movement, just as Swoffy was in bringing two more BASKETBALL schools into the ACC.

The ACC will remain as is with the addition of two football colleges. If one is ND, we will no longer be called the ACC unless we have a really big tsunami.
