I don't see a whole lot of downside to it other than the potential for more injuries, since the players will probably go a little more full tilt. Definitely would be a good money maker though. Good idea Dabo!

If nobody were allowed to attend, I don't see the money side of it. Did I miss something?

I hope

It will be closed to the public and we should start this when we get our indoor practice fac. Because what happens if uga beats us or just scores more in the scrim. Then the preseason polls will be skewed because they would factor we got beat in the spring game just saying but its a cool idea.

I also hope that this doesn't become a tool to placate fans

Mar 28, 2012, 8:41 AM

upset with substituting Syracuse for UGA, OK State, Ole Miss and other quality OOC games that we're going to be sacrificing so UNC and Duke can strengthen their basketball programs.

who cares about preseason polls

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Preseason polls are effed up anyway

Mar 28, 2012, 9:54 PM [ in reply to I hope ]

Hell...Bowden's last season we were preseason #9 and ended up unranked. The National Championship season we were unranked in the preseason. So much for preseason rankings...

game against Furman, for example, or even better against Georgia.

I agree. Doesn't have to be Gawga. Just a change of pace for the team. Put some no blitz rules in, no rushing the punter, etc. to protect the players somewhat, and let them play. Great idea.

Great idea!!!

Because

Mar 28, 2012, 10:26 AM

Preseason polls affect week one polls thats why.

and we'll never play them again in the regular season. This is Dabo's way of keeping the series alive. Play Georgia every year in a Spring Game...

I like the idea idea, but I wouldn't say........

Mar 28, 2012, 10:59 AM

it would "revolutionize" college football.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It would be interesting

Mar 28, 2012, 11:16 AM

if they could simulate the game somewhat similar to how all-star games for the pro's are run so that the chance of injury would be slim. Obviously the scenario is much different and the players will want to push hard, but if you establish certain guidelines (like no tackling the QB's) or even just make it only for underclassmen then you might be able to have a safer environment while still providing entertainment for the fans. Now don't rip my comment to shreds... this is a very BROAD suggestion.

...My two cents

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Like the idea- but close it to everyone except coaching

Mar 28, 2012, 2:44 PM

staffs.

No statistics, no media.

ALso wouldn't allow it to be a formal scrimmage. Would allow situational things.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Would you guys allow Ron Cherry and his crew to officiate?

Mar 28, 2012, 3:55 PM

Me neither

Re: Like the idea- but close it to everyone except . . .

Mar 28, 2012, 4:16 PM [ in reply to Like the idea- but close it to everyone except coaching ]

Yes, close the scrimmage. But allow the television crews in; it would make watching spring games on TV a little more interesting.

Re: It would be interesting

Mar 28, 2012, 4:06 PM

I like it make it controled but coaches only hear me out.

Lets say we get beat bad they score more than dominate us if fans and media are allowed then when people vote in rankings they will say " well uga killed Clemson in that spring game no way we put them ahead" sounds dumb to us and it is but the people who have pull in the bcs and polls would think that way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Also

Mar 28, 2012, 4:27 PM

Maybe do a passing league drills (no lineman just wr te db and lb) give some younger players reps against other people and their speeds.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the downside is too many people would base rankings

Mar 28, 2012, 6:41 PM

off of a scrimmage where winning is not even close to a priority...i guess it's better than the current ranking system anyway

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This actually came up back in the 90s when Tommy West..

Mar 29, 2012, 10:19 PM

.. was here and Danny Ford was at Arkansas. Tommy wanted to scrimmage with Arkansas, but the NCAA told them it would have to count as a regular season game, and would be one less home game for one of the schools.
