My top ten RBs ever to play at Clemson
Jan 23, 2012, 11:15 AM
|
|
This is how i would rank my top 10 (11)
1. Kenny Flowers (big and fast) 2. Terry Allen (new how to get the important yards) 3. Kevin Mack (I just like big backs) 4. Andre Ellington (I love the way he runs) 5. C.J. Spiller (the best in many people's books) 6. Terrance Flagler (great years) 7. Raymond Priester (work horse) 8. James Davis (I liked that #1 and his hard running) 9. Chad Jasmin (63-17) 10. Reggie Merriweather - Cliff Austin (glad they were tigers)
How would you?

Not saying who was the best. just who I liked watching run the ball more. I wish C.J. would have ran North and South more and beat SC more. Those things had a huge impact I my top ten. I almost put emory smith's name in there because of that long run that he had in the carolina game that made Rodney williams go crazy.

I didn't include Ellington because he has had injury issues and I believe the best is yet to come.
I probably should have included Harper (#8) also.

I think had Harper played FB in front of Spiller in the I-formation, (and stayed for four years) he could have been one of Clemson's better backs.

Just missed him. I was pulling for Clemson in 78 but didn't have a tv and lived in a house full of gamecocks. clemson for me was the newspaper until 1980.

some - probably not on a top 10 list but I love me some ricochet rabbit too.
There are so many great backs in our power football history its hard to settle on a list. Ronald Williams had a great couple of seasons prior to injury too.
Priester may actually be the best because he was ALL WE HAD and we still won games when even the Clueless COOT fans knew he was getting the ball every play and he still got yards.

I love a good list.

Here's mine. #1. CJ Spiller. To me, had Dabo been the HC during CJ's full career his numbers would have easily eclipsed Priester's. Rob Spence's underutilization of this guy was criminal. Terry Allen makes a lot of folks's lists because he had a great pro career, but CJ was a much more dynamic and explosive player for a longer stretch of time. #2. Priester. Nowhere near the athlete of the others on this list, but who can argue with the horse that had next to no passing attack to loosen the box for him. #3. Terry Allen. Who knows what this guy might have done with healthy knees. He had one heck of a college run and even better pro run even still. Classic slasher. #4. James Davis. CJ coming to town and a shoulder injuries limited what would have been the all time leading rushing total by a mile. Check 2005 vs. NCST for a reminder of how good JD could be. #5. Kenny Flowers. Incredible physical talent. Another one that had injuries derail what might have been an incredible career. The closest thing we've ever had to Hershel Walker. #6. Ronald Williams. This guy was like #5. Ridiculous talent but knee injuries really hindered him. #7. Flagler. Best all purpose guy until CJ came to town. #8. Lester Brown. 70's workhorse. #9. Ellington. Senior year coming up could propel him up the list some. #10. Chinadu Ohan. Just wanted that name on something somewhere...

Wesely McFadden late 80's

One of my favorites was Wesley McFadden #22, had the Wesley McFadden touchdown club on the Hill, one time the fence broke when he went to give everyone high fives there. He was from Chester County great person, tough runner. Had a big game against VT. Had to share time with other great backs so did not get as much spot light.

Terry Allen was a pure RB to me. CJ was a multi-purpose weapon who i thought was underutilized by Bowden's offensive staff, along with other weapons like Ben Hall. CJ is on my short list of best football players along with B Dawk, Terry Kinard and the best ever: The Judge, Jeff Davis and Anthony Simmons, but pure RB to me will be Terry Allen until someone else comes along.

first game for me: 1977 ND/Clemson game at DV
Jan 23, 2012, 1:07 PM
|
|
with Joe Montana at QB when i was 9....father was lifelong ND fan but had a hidden Clemson admiration after moving to SC...DESPISED the Chickens too...lol....The Judge was the best football player to ever wear the Paw to me...a Ray Lewis before there was Ray Lewis and had a solid NFL career too, although short, 6 years or so. Jerry Butler was a better overall receiver to me than Tuttle was, though Tuttle was a gamer. Jim Stuckey was a beast, Jeff Bryant was my favorite Tiger, number 99, lived in backfields, and is the most underrated DL to me we've ever had. i could go on and on....Dexter Davis would smack you as a DB and Terry Kinard was the sheriff of the secondary....our defenses back then DEFINED our team's personality....the Judge put that facemask in chests so many times that i can still see 45 in my head imposing will on folks....don't get me started on big Joe Bostic, Jim Riggs, Marvin Sims, etc.....beasts....Danny Triplett and Mark Heniford were two undersized warriors at LB too....ND's all american TE, Ken McAfee, told my father after the ND game that year, "number 98 hit me harder than i've been hit in my career..." that was Mark Heniford, a 200 lb. linebacker who started in '77 and was all over the field.

Yes, then I would say something is wrong with your head because both the eye test and the numbers say that Spiller is the better, more versatile, and flat-out more talented back than Terry Allen was. It could also be argued that Spiller played behind a worse line than Allen did.
SpillerRushing: 606 carries for 3547 yards, 5.9avg, 32 TDs Receiving: 123 catches for 1420 yeards, 11 TDs 1st Round NFL Draft
AllenRushing: 523 carries for 2778 yards, 5.3avg, 28 TDs Receiving: 23 catches for 243 yards, 0 TDs 9th Round NFL Draft
Oh, and we're talking skills as a RB only, right? Because CJ also scored 15 more TDs on returns.

I do think CJ was the best, I am just bringing McFadden into the discussion. Spiller is all time best in my opinion not just for his on field results but also off the field he is such a great person and ambassador for the school and everything good about it.

1: Raymond Priester (hard to argue against all-time yardage leader) 2: Terry Allen (even with recurring knee issues, piled up yardage, tds, could catch out the backfield) 3: CJ Spiller (most dynamic player on this list 4: Terrance Flagler (were it not for Kenny Flowers, he'd have set some more records other than single-season yardage, since broken by #1) 5: Kenny Flowers (Heisman talent were it not for untimely knee injuries) 6: James Davis (were it not for rob spence, would have eclipsed #1 in yardage--almost did despite him) 7: Kevin Mack (workhorse with speed--lethal combo) 8: Banks McFadden (legend--only this low because different era) 9: Fred Cone (see McFadden above) 10: Buddy Gore (see #s 8 & 9)

You were undoubtedly not there for the TAMU game in the mid 70s.
Our endzone may say so, but that was not the original question.

I was just poking fun for any UGA and USC fans. Didn't mean it to sound disparaging. I probably was at the A&M game since I attended from '71-'75. Just don't remember anything about it since we weren't very good then and lots of people looked good against us

Ironically enough, I was a freshman in 1971 and graduated in 1975. I went on to get a masters.
Well if you can't remember football - do you remember the Big Streak?
Poking fun is fine and you are correct about George and Hershel not scoring!

I differentiate between best player and best RB
Jan 23, 2012, 1:09 PM
|
|
1. Terry Allen 2. Raymond Priester 3. Ronald Williams 4. Terrance Flagler 5. Andre Ellington 6. CJ Spiller 7. JD 8. Reggie merriweather
CJ Spiller was a top 3 player, but not running back.

So you'd start those 3 guys at RB over CJ Spiller because they're more one-dimensional, slower, and better fit your view as what a "true" RB should be?

A running back is just that. Who is the guy I want in my backfield grinding tough yards and punishing the other team. CJ was not the best a this. CJ is the guy I want returning kicks, running wheel routes, and taking hand-offs in the 4th quarter when the other team is gassed. There is a big difference.

I really would love to hear your explanation of why you rank Andre Ellington ahead of CJ.
Maybe if Ellington is in the Heisman talk after his Senior season they could be comparable, but at this point in Ellington's career, there is no comparison.

Back in the long ago days of Frank Howard, Clemson once had a running back by the name of Ray Yauger and he was pretty dang good too. Even though the other teams knew what was coming, he picked up lot of yardage. But no one ever seems to remember him. Maybe not top 10, but he's up there.

Wasn't Chad Jasmin a FB?

I'd put Zachary in there, and take Chad out- if for no other reason than he was the FB and Coleman was the RB the year of 63-17.

Ronald Williams has got to be in the top 10.
My Top 10 would be
Terry Allen CJ Spiller Raymond Priester Kenny Flowers Ronald Williams Terrance Flagler Kevin Mack James Davis Andre Ellington Joe Henderson
Ellington could move up if he has another year next year like he had this year. But for my money, Allen, Spiller and Priester were the best 3 in my memory (granted that only goes back to the early 80s).

hard to rank them. You have to also consider guys like Banks McFadden and Fred Cone, as well as Ronald Williams (who probably would've been even better if he had gotten to play under Ford instead of Hatfield)
