I understand the reality, but I don't see how this trend could possibly be a good thing, while I can see a lot of not-so-good coming from it.

Prior to 2000, I would have answered, "No, there's not"...

but then I moved to Lexington, SC and everyone was talking about their "star" running back who had started every game as a Freshman. Admittedly, my first reaction was, "Lexington must not have much of a team if a Freshman starts at tailback (and is considered one of their star players)." But then when football season started, I discovered that this "star Freshman tailback" (who was now a Sophomore) was the best player in the State of South Carolina.

So, now I would answer, "Yes, there is such a thing as an elite Freshman player." There's not many, but there are a few exceptional athletes who could earn that distinction.
