HAHA... Im not one of those who are anti-Dabo but that is funny.

For those who critize, remember that Mike Leach, who many of you wanted as head coach, never played collage football at all. You don't have to have played the position to coach it. Tony Elliot was a very good player while at Clemson and I am sure he will be as good a coach.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

People are puzzled by his lack of RB COACHING experience...

Jan 12, 2011, 1:36 PM

... not his lack of RB PLAYING experience.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yeah, but can Tony Elliot talk like a Pirate ????

If he were named WR Coach, nobody on TN would have anything about this hire to grumble about. Good news is he is a quality guy, great playing background has been successful at past jobs, and he will be an asset to our program. Go Tigers!!!

running backs. Allows Scott to learn offense from Morris. If Morris is as good advertised he won't be here long.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

From the article:

Jan 12, 2011, 1:16 PM [ in reply to Re: Elliott leading candidate for running back coach ]

In 2003 he was selected team captain, a rare accomplishment for a former walk-on, and that same year was named Clemson’s most respected player in a poll of his teammates conducted by the Anderson Independent.

That does not make a guy a great coach. One would have to examine his work at SC State and Furman to determine that, but accolades like the one above almost never happen only once and are usually a continuing pattern. It seems to me that if the players thought that much of him then, they will now. And that is not a universal quality within coaching by any means.

I'm not saying he's a great coach; I'm saying it appears to be an informed decision.

two good hires and a head scratcher...

coach wrs?

sorry, i had to stir it up some. lil boring around here.

Now THAT might make more sense...

Jan 12, 2011, 1:04 PM

IIRC, Elliott was coaching WRs for the passt few years.

Loved his smarts and ability as a player.

RB coach is normally one of your lead recruiters

Jan 12, 2011, 1:38 PM [ in reply to two good hires and a head scratcher... ]

If Elliott is hired it will be because of his character and ability to recruit mainly. Personally. I like guys as a coach who had to work for everything they accomplished, and Elliott certainly fits that bill. The other guy being spoken of was McCorvey, who also was mainly a WR coach. Powell couldn't recruit, which is the main reason he was let go

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i can't say this is 'everywhere', but rb's and wr's work on

Jan 12, 2011, 1:41 PM

a lot of the same skill sets.

this is not a stretch at all if elliott handles the backs.

Setting up for release

Jan 12, 2011, 1:07 PM

of the Scott's after signing day. Elliot gets WR and recruiting coord and Morris gets to hire his RB and OL coaches. HOPEFULLY!

Absolutely awesome if Tony Elliott is hired at Clemson, he will do a great job. Excellent recruiter, excellent demeanor, excellent person, huge heart for Clemson. That is great news.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Big fan of this guy- he is an achiever

Jan 12, 2011, 1:15 PM

I expect him to do fine. I suspect he will decide who he wants in the game and not the backs.

TE is an exceptional young man who has achieved as a player, in business, and in coaching. I wish he had a little more experience but the will do us proud. I honestly believe that

Team Captain , Hustle and Dedication award,

Jan 12, 2011, 1:14 PM

Academic All-District, and a 3.55 in engineering - certainly smarter than the typical T-Netter - so let's noy get too negative about what he knows about coaching RB's.

Re: Team Captain , Hustle and Dedication award,

Jan 12, 2011, 1:26 PM

This decision is all about money. After giving Morris 450,000 a year, it doesn't leave alot of money to hire a good running backs coach. They know they can get away with only paying him around $100,000 a year.

Re: Team Captain , Hustle and Dedication award,

Jan 12, 2011, 1:27 PM [ in reply to Team Captain , Hustle and Dedication award, ]

Engineers are good with angles. Lets hope he believes that north/south is the quickest and shortest way from one end of the FB field to the other. And not this mamby pansy dancing around in the back field untill all holes are plugged.

Ton of exp, was a TB in college

Elons HC now, but was also a RB

https://tomobrienfootballcamps.com/bio.php

Looks like to me, there are many teams that have RB coaches that were not RBs. The knock would be experience. a common theme with this coaching staff.

Re: Tony's IQ better than most on this site

Jan 12, 2011, 1:57 PM

Most of the people on this site think they could be the HC...so why can't a former Clemson player coach the RBs? How much coaching do Ellington, Lane, and Bellamy really need? They need a coach that can keep them in line and out of trouble.

I went to Clemson with Tony, and his IQ and character far surpasses most of the people on this site.
