Yale Coning to Clemson

Mar 11, 2017, 9:30 PM

The Yale baseball team will be in Clemson for single games next Tuesday and Wednesday. The third baseman and captain of the Yale team (Richard Slinker)is the grandson of one of my best WW2 buddies. His parents will arrive on Monday and be here for the series. His Mother is the daughter of my deceased buddy. I've been in touch with her for the past two or three years but this will be our first meeting. I've shared many stories about her Dad and have a lot more to share. His nickname was "Spoon" and I have a WW2 Army spoon I will present to her.

to the series. Wants me to show him where all the Midnight Man Scenes were shot. Also, drink at Trip-T.

Of course, I'll bring his highly bangable 34G Sister-in-law also.

Best you Sir, and rest in peace the WWII vets who did not come back. The world would be indescribably crueler and darker but for what you accomplished. Enjoy your visit!

Tigernet should do an article about this.***

Way to go Mr Joe!

Joe, I would like to know more about your WW2 service, I

Mar 12, 2017, 8:46 PM

interview vets. for the Veterans History Project for the Library of Congress. My Father was in Okinawa and came to Clemson on GI Bill. My uncle Jack was a fighter pilot in WW2 and also came to Clemson. I was in army and my Brother Barry was an helicopter pilot in Vietnam, unfortunately killed over there with 2 weeks left. It is urgent to get the WW 2 vets. in there. I have interviewed the last of the Hogan's Heroes (a true story) from Gray Court, the last of the Pearl Harbor Survivors in Walterboro, the last of the Burma Raiders, three vets who were in WW2, Korea and in Vietnam, One from New Guaeni, several from the Phillipines. one from Midway, One airborne who jumped into Normandy on Dday, one who lost 200 of his 250 men on Omaha Beach on Dday. Some of these wonderful warriors had never told their story, but were really happy to finally get it out. This is very important for the history books. T-mail me if you would please sir!

Re: Joe, I would like to know more about your WW2 service, I

Mar 12, 2017, 9:58 PM

I have already been interviewed for the project-- about two or three years ago. I served three and one-half years during WW2, about 13 months of that time in Europe. Was recalled to active duty in Sept. 1950 and spent almost all of my one year plus term in Korea (North and South). I thought it was cold in Europe but the 35 F. below zero during the winter of 1950-51 in Korea, was a killer.

For the record, I have located only one member still living with whom I served in Europe and he is in poor health. I have made contact with children of three of my best buddies from WW2. I'm in touch with about five from the Koran War but was never with any long enough to establish a close relationship. Most of the time I was with anywhere from two others to 20 - 25 men and at no time was I with the entire company. For over two months I was assigned to a Combat Engineering Company and never knew where I was.

Joe, Ron - Wow, amazing stories!! THANKS.

Mar 12, 2017, 11:33 PM [ in reply to Joe, I would like to know more about your WW2 service, I ]

THANK YOU both for your service to us and the sacrifices of you & your families. I know it sounds pretty meager, but it is sincere. All the best to you both. Joe, have a wonderful time this week with your buddy's family.
