Classic Tommy Bowden...

Sep 26, 2008, 12:19 PM

"I'm kind of disappointed in myself. I haven't given the people what they really, really want. Which is an undefeated, unscored on team every year. Working hard on that."

You know, every time I start to sympathize with the guy he says something like this. Cut off the last two sentences and it is a reasonable quote...because he hasn't delivered. Add the last two sentences and it is TB as usual. A smug, smart a$$ who cannot relate to his fan base.

a somewhat scarastic and honest comment from a coach at a school where a segment of the fan base would find something to b!tch and moan about no matter if said coach did go undefeated and unscored on every year.

Honestly I like the comment. It shows a little fire

Sep 26, 2008, 12:25 PM

which is all too often lost in the coach speak we hear so often today.

I don't really like Phil Fulmer, but I loved his comments to the media earlier this week.

"Our wide receiver coach has accomplished just as much as your legend."

- The man of a million handles.

Problem with said comment is that said coach hasn't gone

undefeated, won a national championship, gone to a BCS bowl game or even won the ACC in ANY YEAR, much less every year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But even coaches who have done any of that have not

every year or so I get to come back to DV and last years
was BC. In the day we went all around town and every
store selling every type of Clemson gear was packed
(ka-ching). And don't forget the big rise in donors.

When the money slows down, then maybe Tommy will be shown
the door.

I don't think it's justified

Sep 26, 2008, 12:30 PM [ in reply to or... ]

The 'picky' fans don't think he has a right to be so arrogant and sarcastic when perinnealy he has similar 'issues'. QB loyalty, line issues, inexperience, parity, flat performance, or special teams (not this year.) It's almost like he expects us to think that our team is great and doing everything up to realistic expectation when that's not the case. I've never liked his public attitude and think it contributes to always being on the "hot seat." He needs a PR advisor.

I'd say this ranks right up there with his comment "go 7-4 at USC and you get a raise, go 7-4 here and you get fired."

It just points out that he just doesn't get it!

This is not USC! #### right I expect to go better than 7-4 most of the time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yeah, being sarcastic to the fan base that pays his salary

Sep 29, 2008, 3:41 PM [ in reply to or... ]

is a great idea. Clemson fans aren't asking the team to be perfect. Our fan base would be happy getting to an ACC title game. Can he do that? Nope. Can he beat the Citadel and SC State? Yes.

He's a tool. He doesn't deserve to be the coach at Clemson anymore. He's obviously not appreciated so let him go find somewhere else where the fans expect less of him.

perhaps a smug, smart@$$, denial of virtue group of fans whom look for error in anything CTB & the team do or say.

what the heII are you talking about? Denial of virtue? How

about a bunch of tired and exasperated fans.

I wonder if his lip was quivering when he said that

Sep 26, 2008, 1:15 PM

He amazes me. That comment implies that he's actually achieved some things since he's been here.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Come on uproar, he's achieved quite a few things. Should

Sep 26, 2008, 1:53 PM

you and others consider it not enough, I do understand; especially some questions of on field performance.

I'm not in denial or a blind follower of Coach Bowden. I do believe the state of the program was at it's lowest point in 50+ years when CTB was hired; you've heard it all before so I won't bore anyone with the detail.

I am not happy with a number of things which I see rehashed ad nauseum. Although my faith in CTB has wavered, I am still hopeful that he can turn things around; should he not, I certainly hope I don't resort to comments about lip quivering, etc.

Tommy has accepted responsibility and could do it dozens of times and it still would not be enough for some fans.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

True - that is what we want ! Sounds reasonable to me***

Sep 26, 2008, 12:38 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd be happy with an ACC championship.

Sep 26, 2008, 12:39 PM

Some fans do have unrealistic expectations and b!tch about just about everything but I think most of us just want to win the ACC again or even play for it. If he does this year I'll be a happy guy. It doesn't take perfection. A lot of you are breaking down our performance against SC State and pointing out how bad our team played. A game that we won 54-0 btw. That is stupid. But expecting to play for the ACC Champ. is not. Sometimes it's easy, when your being attacked, to lump everyone together. I understand this statement but also don't believe it applies to all of us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, by making a biting and sarcastic response, he's shown

Sep 26, 2008, 12:41 PM

that he has nothing in common with a fanbase that only makes biting and sarcastic responses.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Classic Tommy Bowden...

Sep 26, 2008, 12:56 PM

What we really want is a coach who doesn't complain every year about having to start too many freshman at X position, or having Y number of players with no PT, or one who doesn't deflect critism onto his players or use more successful coaches as examples of why losing is ok.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Let's say, for a minute, that he...

Sep 26, 2008, 1:24 PM

...came out and admitted the Alabama game was entirely his fault. He was not prepared and therefore did not prepare the team well enough to play Alabama. Then what? We still lost. We still have to go back to work and get better. What does it solve? Absolutely nothing. All it does is make you feel better because the man you so despise validated your opinion. Ironic.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Already happened

Sep 26, 2008, 1:29 PM

"Responsibility of getting the team prepared is mine. As I told the team, I didn't get them prepared. And that's my job, my responsibility. I'll find a solution to the problem. We'll go to work on Monday. It's one game out of 12. But we've obviously got a long way to go. I've got to start with myself and work down."

Re: Classic Tommy Bowden...

Sep 26, 2008, 1:26 PM

You people need to get a life and quit nitpicking every little word people say.

You probably wouldn't be happy if we won the national championship because we didn't do it the way you thought was correct.

Be happy and enjoy the football season you have been praying for and counting down the days until it began. Geez!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What part are you enjoying so far?***

Sep 29, 2008, 3:44 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I did enjoy the SCSU band***

Sep 29, 2008, 3:49 PM [ in reply to Re: Classic Tommy Bowden... ]

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And Bowden wants a fan base who thinks he is great simply

Sep 29, 2008, 3:54 PM

because he takes his players to church once a year and is the son of Bobby Bowden. He would say that we do not have our priorities in order. After all, 50% of teams lose every Saturday and we win more than we lose since he's been here. Heck, we've been bowl eligible every year he's been here! We obviously expect way too much as fans.

I do appreciate the good things he's done for our players and in the community. But the bottom line is that he has not gotten it done. And he can never say that we have failed to give him plenty of time to do so!
