Clemson Dominates National Champion Coaches

May 12, 2017, 9:29 AM

Hi all. I apologize if I am reposting the same info twice. I tried to make this post earlier, but I must have not done it correctly. I am new to the board, but I have enjoyed reading this forum for a long time. In fact, my wife thinks I should be concerned about enjoying Tigernet a bit too much.

Ever hear people talk about the importance of a person's last impression of someone else? Well, our Tigers have given quite the last impression to the most recent national title winning head coaches.

I LOVE the fact that Urban Meyer and Nick Saban each has a loss to the Tigers as his most recent memory of facing Clemson. But they are not the only ones to have lost their most recent games against Clemson. Since 1980, the vast majority of the previous National Championship winning coaches has a loss as his final (or most recent) memory of facing Clemson as well.

Unless I have miscounted, there have been 29 head coaches to win a national title since 1980. Of course, some of those coaches have won multiple titles. In some years, there was more than one head coach to claim a title -- back when the AP and the Coaches polls each determined a national champion.

Again assuming my quick counting skills are accurate, those 29 title winning head coaches have A COLLECTIVE 2-25 RECORD in their last games against Clemson. 2 and 25!! In compiling this record, I counted a coach's last game vs Clemson for each time he won the title (so I counted Saban five times, for example, since he has won titles). Also, there have been 10 title winners who have not faced Clemson as a head coach.

Obviously, this statistic could change each year Clemson faces one of these coaches. It could potentially change as often as each year, for example, as long as Jimbo Fisher stays at FSU.

Here is the list of the last National Title winning coaches. Again, as of today in Spring/Summer 2017, TWO and TWENTY-FIVE (2-25)!!

Clemson has made quite the lasting impression!

Brown's win was before he won NC at Texas. So, I guess technically he was not a NC coach at the last time we played him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good point. Makes the stat 1-25 vs. Clemson

Since Brown was the only coach on this list who had won the title after his last game vs. Clemson, the statistics change to 1-25 in last game vs. Clemson as a NC winner.

Thanks!

who they were at the time, you know we had to have played well.
Also, since we're hunting silver linings, the fact that it was the loudest (or second loudest) game I've ever been to, (I couldn't hear myself yelling either time) it's hard to take this 6 POINT 3OT game as more than 0.6 of a loss IMHO.
After McDaniel picked off Ponder and pointed at him; and everyone automatically starts singing/yelling "We Will Rock You" being the other loud time for anyone wondering .
