Midseason thoughts, awards and surprises

The Clemson football team will hold a light practice today, then take the next three days off as part of the Tigers’ open date. It isn’t exactly the midway point of the season – they’ve played seven games and have five more in the regular season – but if this team hits the goal of playing in the College Football Playoff and maybe even the title game, seven is about as close to the middle as you can get.

Wednesday practice update: Tigers go back to basics

It’s no secret that Clemson defeated NC State last Saturday despite turnovers and not playing its best game, but with Florida St. looming in a week head coach Dabo Swinney isn’t putting pressure on his team. All he wants to do is reinforce the fundamentals.

Jeff Scott: "They're not trying to turn the ball over"

Co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott brought two hand-written pages of notes to his open week press conference with the media Tuesday, and he covered a lot of ground.

Deshaun Watson gets a double surprise Tuesday
Deshaun Watson watched head coach Dabo Swinney give a small speech about Habitat for Humanity Tuesday, then received a double surprise.

Why not Feaster?
Clemson has several talented freshmen on the roster, who have all played at times throughout the season, but Scott said a game hanging in the balance isn’t the time to give a young guy his breakout opportunity.

Turnover margin the glaring statistic for Tigers
There are plenty of terrific numbers for the Clemson football team through its first seven games. But the bad statistic that jumps off the screen, especially after the past two home games, is turnover margin.

Christian Wilkins for Heisman? He deserves at least a look
Christian Wilkins won’t earn an invitation to New York City in December for the Heisman Trophy presentation, and he won’t be a part of the Heisman conversation in the days and weeks leading up to the trophy presentation. And that’s a shame because Wilkins has arguably been the Tigers’ most important player through the first seven games of the season, and he’s done it all.
