His childhood favorite team growing up was Oregon.

Pickering had 85 tackles including 39 tackles for a loss and five sacks last season. He was named USA Today's first-team All-Missippi team for those efforts.

In 2016, he had 72 tackles including 26 for loss, four sacks, four pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and an interception.

3-star Lawrenceville, Georgia defensive end Colby Wooden announced a Clemson offer on social media Wednesday night. Wooden recently visited Tennessee after they offered in December. He also holds offers from Florida State, Georgia, Auburn, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Michigan and Michigan State among more Power 5 schools.

3-star 2019 Malvern (Pa.) LB Keith Maguire Jr. announced a Clemson offer on Tuesday afternoon. Maguire recently was offered by Notre Dame after attending a Junior Day there, and also picked up offers from Ohio State, Boston College, Connecticut, Northwestern, Maryland, Toledo and Kent State in the last month.

Maguire was an all-league selection playing linebacker and wide receiver last season. He totaled three interceptions and caught 19 passes for 278 yards and five touchdowns.

He told TigerNet he is looking to make Clemson's next Junior Day coming up March 3.

Two highly-regarded Hammond School (Columbia, S.C.) products were in town to visit Clemson.

2020 defensive end Jordan Burch and defensive tackle Alex Huntley made the trip, with Huntley saying the duo had a "great time" in a picture on Twitter with Clemson defensive line coach Todd Bates.

Burch, also a potential basketball prospect, holds offers from Clemson, as well as Georgia, Oklahoma, Michigan, Duke, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina and Wake Forest.

Huntley recently picked up offers from Oklahoma and Michigan and grabbed a Georgia offer last fall. He visited for the Clemson-Georgia Tech game last season.

Clemson tight end Cannon Smith also played at the Hammond School.

An ESPN story Monday put recruiting's impact on the national title race in perspective.

Per their data, the last seven national title winners have averaged a top-10 recruiting class the four years before that school's title, and they each posted one class inside the top-four within two years of their championship.

Using that model projecting forward, four teams fit the mold for both stats in 2018 per ESPN: Alabama (2.5 average class rank), Ohio State (3.75), Georgia (4.75) and Florida State (4.5). In the top-10 class average range, Southern California (6.75), Clemson (6.75) and Auburn (9.25) join those four.

"The (Clemson) 2018 class finished at No. 5 overall, which might mean that Clemson could buck the stat and still win the championship," ESPN's Tom VanHaaren writes. "Dabo Swinney's staff will have a lot to work with, especially on the defensive line, where Christian Wilkins, Clelin Ferrell and Austin Bryant all elected to come back to school to join up with Dexter Lawrence and 2018 five-stars Xavier Thomas and K.J. Henry."

5-star Clemson DE target Zacch Pickens continues to pick up major offers from around the country.

The T.L. Hanna (Anderson, S.C.) product announced an offer from Oklahoma on Saturday. He also received offers from LSU and Alabama recently to go with similar interest from Clemson, Georgia, South Carolina, Auburn, Miami, Michigan and Tennessee among more Power 5 offers.

Pickens, rated as the top player in the state, visited South Carolina for Junior Day recently and was also in Columbia for the Clemson-South Carolina game. He made stops in Clemson for both the Auburn and Wake Forest games last season.

Pickens hasn't put together a top schools list as of yet.

Clemson co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach Jeff Scott was named one of the top-25 recruiters in the nation by two recruiting outlets this week.

Scott made the Rivals.com's Top-25 for a third-straight class.

"Clemson co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott is no stranger to this list," Rivals' Josh Helmboldt wrote. "Signing the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect will go a long way toward getting your name here three years in a row, and that’s exactly what (Scott) did with quarterback Trevor Lawrence. However, arguably even more impressive was stealing five-star Alabama-based wide receiver Justyn Ross out from under Nick Saban’s nose. Scott gets credit for a third five-star in this class with wide receiver Derion Kendrick."

247Sports.com keeps a running log of who's recruiting who and credited Scott as the primary recruiter for five Clemson signees, which was enough to rank him seventh in the nation and No. 1 in the ACC. Those five signees included three rated as five-star prospects by at least one outlet in wide receiver Derion Kendrick and Justyn Ross and defensive tackle Josh Belk.

Credited with recruiting 5-star D-ends Xavier Thomas and K.J. Henry, as well as tight end Braden Galloway, tight ends coach and special teams coordinator Danny Pearman checked in at No. 31 in the 247Sports rankings. Brent Venables also made the top-100 (86; Primary or secondary recruiter on 4-star DB Mario Goodrich, 4-star DE Justin Mascoll, 4-star DT Darnell Jefferies and 4-star LB Jake Venables).

2019 four-star Everett, Massachusetts safety Lewis Cine announced an offer from Clemson on his Twitter account Thursday afternoon. Cine is a top-40-rated 247Sports Composite prospect as the No. 3 safety in the nation.

A survey of recruits rated Clemson as the No. 1 brand in college football.

The survey asked 224 recruits to rate their "interest and desire" surrounding each program as if they were the No. 1-rated prospect in the nation.

Just how much does the brand help? The site that conducted survey, Pick Six Previews, explains.

"College football is an exercise in the principles of statistics," they write. "Think about these brand rankings as a ranking system of the true probabilities assigned to each program’s likelihood to land any given high school recruit regardless of circumstance.

"Clemson would then have the best probability to land any recruit it wants, whether it be the number one recruit in the country or the number 5,000 recruit in the country."

The survey notes Clemson (8.71 brand metric ranking) as in a group with Oregon and Miami as brands outperforming their revenue flow, with Clemson listed with the 27th-most revenue in 2015-16. Oregon (8.15) checks in at No. 5 in best brands, with Miami not far behind at No. 7 (8.10).

"Clemson has Death Valley, Howard's Rock, the charismatic Dabo Swinney, and a recent National Championship to sell," they write. "These three programs have found a way to differentiate themselves in the eyes of teenage student-athletes with their brand from the blue bloods and other non-traditional powers in the sport of college football."

Notable lower rankings include Notre Dame at 15 (7.49), Alabama at 19 (7.25), Texas at 20 (7.13) and South Carolina at 32 (6.29).

Two Clemson 2018 opponents were named "winners" of the 2018 National Signing Day by CBS Sports.

Two schools with ties to Jimbo Fisher made the cut of four teams in Texas A&M, at No. 3, and Florida State, at No. 4.

The Aggies, who Clemson plays on Sept. 8, moved from No. 35 in the rankings last week to inside the top-20 at No. 17 in the 247Sports Composite Rankings. They signed 13 4-star prospects in all in a 23-man class.

"Texas A&M stole an in-state defensive tackle from Alabama (Bobby Brown)," Barton Simmons wrote, "held off a late push by Florida State to land the best quarterback available after the early period in James Foster, beat Oklahoma for offensive tackle Tank Jenkins, and got one of the best edge rushers in California in Jeremiah Martin. The quantity late in the process was there for Fisher, but the quality was on point, too."

CBS Sports notes that the FSU class was ranked No. 64 overall at one point and moved to No. 11 on Wednesday.

"On signing day, Willie Taggart closed with four-star athlete Tre'Shaun Harrison out of Washington," Simmons wrote, "he stole a big time talent from Tennessee in wide receiver Jordan Young; he landed four-star defensive end Malcolm Lamar out of Tampa; and he stole a second Tennessee commit in running back Anthony Grant. It was a solid close for a coach that faced a steep uphill battle this cycle with his arrival in Tallahassee."

Clemson quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator Brandon Streeter hit a number of topics in a Q&A session Wednesday.

Streeter talks closing the 2018 recruiting class strong, as well as QB competition and reps this spring and more:

Clemson took the ACC recruiting crown for the first time in 247Sports' Composite Rankings going back to 2000.

The site averages 247Sports' ranking as well as Rivals.com, ESPN, and more recruiting websites, and Clemson checked in at No. 6 overall through Wednesday evening.

The Tigers trailed Miami midway through Signing Day before 5-star WR Justyn Ross announced his Clemson commitment. Miami finished the day in eighth in the rankings. In average prospect ranking, Clemson finished 4th in the 247Sports Composite (93.45).

Transitioning coaches after a rough season, Florida State recovered with a big Signing Day push to move up to 11th in the standings.

Watch Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and assistant coaches Jeff Scott and Todd Bates react to 5-star WR Justyn Ross announcing his Tigers' commitment:

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney did a break down of the 2018 Clemson signing class and talked a little about the prep for 2018 for local media this afternoon:

ESPN's Signing Day coverage noted that Justyn Ross joins FSU Heisman Trophy-winner Jameis Winston as the only No. 1-rated Alabama prospects to leave the state for school since ESPN started ranking prospects in 2006 with his Clemson commitment Wednesday.

Ross to ESPN on Clemson: "When I was up there, it just felt like family. Even though we were out of state, they made me and my family feel like it was home. That played a big part. It just felt like home.

Ross on what stood out from Dabo Swinney's recruitment: "Just how down to earth he is. How involved he is with his players. That means a lot to me. I want to have a great relationship with my head coach."

Ross also said Trevor Lawrence being on board with the class "made a great impact" on his decision.

Clemson added a seventh 5-star-rated prospect to its 2018 class with the ESPN-televised commitment of Phenix City, Alabama receiver Justyn Ross Wednesday.

Ross is a second 5-star receiver to join the Tigers’ 2018 group, in addition to South Pointe (S.C.)’s Derion Kendrick. Also on the offensive side, No. 1 overall prospect Trevor Lawrence anchors the class at quarterback, as well as 5-star offensive lineman Jackson Carman.

The Central High School (Ala.) product totaled 730 receiving yards in 37 catches with 13 touchdowns last season.

Ross’ commitment moves Clemson to fifth in 247Sports’ Composite rankings, and matches No. 1-rated Georgia for the number of 5-star signees currently.

The push for the 2019 class really kicks into high gear soon. Although a year away, Clemson's giving its targets a lookahead to 2019 Signing Day.

3-star Baton Rouge, Louisiana linebacker Bryton Constantin showed an example of that with this tweet Wednesday.

Constantin is slated to visit for a March 3 Junior Day. He played on an undefeated University Lab team in 2017 and totaled 104 tackles (23 for loss), six sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and two defensive TDs.

Clemson walk-on receiver signee Drew Swinney just held his signing ceremony at Daniel High School in Central.

Clemson LB signee Jake Venables held his ceremony Wednesday morning as well.

Clemson and Ohio State's battle over 5-star offensive tackle signee Jackson Carman came back up during a press conference from Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer Wednesday.

Ohio State signed 247Sports' No. 1-rated OT Nicholas Petit-Frere out of Tampa, Florida after an ESPNU-televised announcement Wednesday.

Back in December, Carman made a surprise pick of Clemson during the early signing period over his home-state Buckeyes, and after his announcement, Carman referenced Clemson's staff saying Meyer was on "the back end of his career."

Meyer didn't address the comments at the time, but did weigh in on the end result on the recruiting trail Wednesday:

The final announcement of interest is coming up around 1:15 ET on ESPN2 with 5-star Central (Ala.) WR Justyn Ross.

A Ross commitment to Clemson would mark a seventh player rated as a 5-star prospect by any recruiting service in Clemson's 2018 class, which would match No. 1-rated class overall Georgia's 5-star prospects rated by 247Sports' Composite.

A Ross commitment would also move a Tigers' 16-signee class past Alabama for fourth overall currently in the 247Sports' rankings.

The Crimson Tide are the favorite going in with 81 percent of the projections in 247Sports' Crystal Ball, with Clemson next (15 percent) and then Auburn (4).

Four-star linebacker Dax Hollifield picked Virginia Tech over Clemson, UNC and Stanford in an announcement at his school Wednesday.

The Tigers were the first to offer the Shelby (N.C.) defender, and after some late shifts in Clemson’s recruiting board, Hollifield appeared back on the radar recently before he committed to sign with the Hokies.

Last season, Hollifield posted 150 tackles, including 32 for loss and 6.5 sacks. He also tallied a big junior season with 146 tackles, 52 tackles for loss an interception, and a pass breakup. As a sophomore, he totaled 204 tackles, including 38 tackles for loss, 8 sacks and an interception. As a freshman, he registered 112 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 6 sacks and an interception.

Virginia Tech moved up to the 22nd-best class rated by 247Sports with Hollifield's commitment, which is the fourth-best in the ACC currently behind Miami (5), Clemson (7) and Florida State (12).

Some key announcements down and several more coming up nationwide, Clemson is sitting in sixth in the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings for the 2018 class.

The next two announcements to watch are 4-star LB Dax Hollifield around 11 a.m. (livestream expected here) and 5-star WR Justyn Ross in the 1 p.m. hour on ESPN2.

If Clemson gained a commitment from both targets, that will likely clinch a top-5 class in the 247Sports Composite. Right now, those potential commitments would move the Tigers to fourth.

Hollifield has Clemson in a group with UNC, Virginia Tech and Stanford as finalists. Ross is considering the Tigers versus in-state Alabama and Auburn.

5-star DB Patrick Surtain Jr. picked Alabama over Clemson and LSU in an ESPNU announcement.

LSU and Alabama were regarded as the favorites down the stretch, but Clemson was able to draw a visit in January.

The American Heritage (Fla.) product is the son of former All-Pro and also American Heritage coach Patrick Surtain.

Surtain is listed at 6-foot-1 and 199 pounds and is rated as the No. 1 cornerback in the nation and the No. 6 overall prospect by the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Alabama is seventh now with Surtain's announcement in the 247Sports team rankings. Clemson is currently in sixth in the standings.

As expected, three-star safety Trevon Flowers announced he will sign with Tennessee over Clemson and Kentucky also Wednesday.

An ex-Kentucky baseball signee, Flowers is expected to play football and baseball at the college level after one season of high school football.

That senior campaign at Tucker High School (Ga.) was enough to garner the attention of a number of programs, with the 6-1 defensive back visiting Clemson and Tennessee in last week before National Signing Day.

Flowers was rated as a 3-star prospect who also held offers from Appalachian State and Illinois.

SI college football writer Bruce Feldman says his polling of college coaches regards Clemson DE signee Xavier Thomas as the best player in the nation out of the 2018 class:

2018 receiver Drew Swinney from Clemson signed as a preferred walk-on at Clemson during a high school ceremony on Wednesday.

Swinney is the son of Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney.

Clemson has offered him a walk-on spot as a wide receiver. Tigernet has watched him at the last few Dabo Swinney Football camps and he has fast acceleration and reliable hands.

Swinney played QB for the Lions in addition to receiver as a senior. He totaled 30 catches for 405 yards last season.

Highlights for walk-on signee Carson Donnelly out of Briarwood Christian High School in Birmingham, Alabama:

2018 Dual-threat quarterback Ben Batson from Clemson signed as a preferred walk-on as an athlete at Clemson on Wednesday.

Batson is the son of long-time Clemson strength and conditioning coach Joey Batson.

As a senior at Dorman high school, he was named Region 3 5A player of the year as he completed 58.8% for 1792 yards with 13 passing touchdowns and only four interceptions. He showed off his athleticism on the ground with 1201 yards rushing and 13 scores.

Clemson welcomes its latest signings, 4-star Lee's Summit West (Mo.) CB Mario Goodrich and preferred walk-ons, athlete Ben Batson (son of Clemson director of strength and conditioning), safety Carson Donnelly and receiver Drew Swinney (son of Clemson coach Dabo Swinnney).

Lee's Summit West coach Vincent Careswell on 4-star Clemson CB commit Mario Goodrich and his recruiting process: "Mario is dynamic. He’s a true competitor. You can tell how close and how important family is to him just by the showing today (at the TV announcement). They played a big role in the recruiting process and kinda guided him through the process to make this decision. Extremely proud of Mario. This is big for Lee’s Summit West too. It puts us on the map as far as the national recruiting scene. (Mario’s) a great, tremendous player. I’m gonna miss him."

Goodrich on his Clemson visit: “The coaching staff, I felt like I was at home when I went. The visit was terrific. The players and coaches are always happy. I had that feeling in my chest.”

Goodrich on playing for Dabo Swinney: “It’s exciting. He’s a genuine guy. He cares about his players. They’re always at his house. He’s got an open-door policy. I just felt comfortable around him.”

Goodrich's mom on the Clemson decision: "We know he made the right decision. We know. We know. We know. We knew it literally when he got there...Dabo is the man. We felt like we were at home."

Clemson’s late push was rewarded as four-star cornerback and top-100 prospect Mario Goodrich announced that he’s signing with Clemson Wednesday morning on a local TV broadcast.

Goodrich was offered by the Tigers in mid-January and he made an official visit on Jan. 26. The Tigers coaching staff followed up with a trip to his school and an in-home visit shortly after.

The Lee’s Summit, Missouri, product was also considering Georgia and LSU heavily, where he also made January official visit stops.

Goodrich logged 28 passes defended (pass breakups plus interceptions) over the last two seasons.

The announcement moved Clemson up three spots to No. 6 in the 247Sports Composite Rankings.
