Playoff Watch: Midseason projections have Clemson in elite group |
Clemson is in a group of five teams with the best College Football Playoff odds here at midseason.
ESPN’s Playoff Predictor projects Clemson in a tie for the second-best chance (72 percent) with Alabama and not far behind Ohio State (74). The next two are pretty close to each other in Notre Dame (62) then Georgia (55). Within the same company but with some different numbers, ESPN’s FiveThirtyEight pegs Clemson also with the second-best CFP odds (60) - just behind Alabama (61) and ahead of Ohio State (56), Notre Dame (45) and Georgia (41). The outlet bumps Clemson’s chances to nearly 70 percent with a win over NC State (68). FBS Independent Notre Dame holds the lowest chance of winning out and making the CFP of any of the top-five (86). Elsewhere, ESPN’s media bowl predictions call for Clemson and Ohio State in the Orange Bowl. CBS Sports projects the same. Three of the top-4 teams by week seven last year made the playoff in Alabama, Clemson and Georgia, while Oklahoma was ranked No. 12 in the AP Poll at 4-1 but No. 6 in ESPN’s Football Power Index. ESPN's FPI gives Clemson an 85.6 percent or better chance to win every game left in the regular season, with the 3:30 p.m. kickoff next week with NC State the second-toughest (89.9).
