Clemson-Kansas NCAA Tournament projections |
The countdown is on to Clemson’s first Sweet 16 NCAA Tournament appearance since 1997.
Brad Brownell’s fifth-seeded Tigers (25-9) rolled through the first rounds in San Diego last week with an 11-point win over 12-seed New Mexico State and a 31-point victory over 4-seed Auburn. Next up is a 7:07 EDT tip-off on CBS with 1-seed Kansas (29-7), which is currently a 5-point favorite. NCAA.com’s analytics-based Final Four projection Thursday not only pegged a Clemson Elite 8 appearance but also a run to San Antonio and a date with Texas Tech next week. The Tigers will look to buck the trend from night one of the NCAA Tourney's Sweet 16, which eliminated their projections for the South (Kentucky) and West regions (Gonzaga). ESPN’s Basketball Power Index favors Kansas by 3.9 points, giving the Tigers a 35 percent chance at the upset. ESPN-affiliated site FiveThirtyEight renders Clemson a 27 percent chance at advancing. NCAAGameSim projects a slim Tigers’ win, while The Power Rank likes the Jayhawks by two points - giving Clemson a 39 percent chance at the win. The Tigers have moved up to No. 14 in the KenPom efficiency ranking, bolstered by the No. 7-ranked defense and a top-45 offense (43). Kansas is up to No. 9 in the rankings, with the No. 5 offense and the No. 47 defense.
