I just had a crazy idea about the future of college sports.

We all think that when we finally get around to making football and basketball professional sports at Clemson, FSU, et. al. that this will have an impact on the non-revenue sports. Where will the money come from to pay for golf, tennis, volleyball, etc.?

I had a crazy thought. I have no idea how it would work or if it would even be tried. But, what if those other sports used bass fishing, yes, bass fishing as the model.

There are two major professional bass fishing organizations, Bassmasters and Major League Fishing. Both of them have college tournaments, even a college trail - a series of tournaments leading up to a national championship. Heck, they both have high school tournaments. Virtually all of the young fishermen fishing at the highest level on both tours came up through the college ranks. (Young = 25 or younger.)

Both of them do this outside the NCAA. The kids compete for prizes and money. I confess I don't know where the schools get the money to fund such a team, but they do. Theses guys have fully decked out boats, supplied by the schools, and travel around competing in multi-day tournaments.

Well, take golf as an example. What if Titleist or Callaway or PXG decided they would start a college tournament trail? What if high school kids went to college, played in tournaments outsdie the NCAA and were governed by a private corporation?

Just a silly idea.

But, those of you around Clemson probably know there are college and HS fishing tournaments on the lake every year, probably several.

And, here is the official college ranking for MLF bass fishing schools. Most are small schools, but not all. Clemson is ranked 34th.

Not sure how Albarn is ranked above us when they don't even have a lake!***

Lots of dams, plenty of water there to practice in. Two lakes very similar to what is around Clemson.

It was a nod to Lewis Grizzard who said "Auburn was nothing more than Clemson

Yes, it is silly. College sports are played by students who now have a chance to earn money at other the college bookstore or dining room. Professional sports are played by men and women who have homes, families and make at least part of their living in their sport. Do not be fooled by the man on the corner with the sign that says "The end is near".

Those schools have been the "elite" for several years.

Carson-Newman (my wife's alma mater) has been a powerhouse for the past couple of years.

Like I say, I have no idea how they get the money to pay for the boats, equipment, etc. and other expenses, like travel. I do know some of the schools give full scholarships.

So, what if the PGA tour set up a College Tour? I would think that companies like Titleist, Callaway, etc. would be more than willing to sign HS kids to contracts. (Can you imagine how much Titleist would have paid Jordan Speith to use their clubs and equipment while he was still in school at Texas?)

We need a market driven solution (i.e., make all sports club sports)

Title IX has created a mess and with it's latest interpretation it's only gonna get messier.

I say blow the whole thing up and let the sports self fund via sponsorships, broadcast rights, bake sales, etc -- if the sport can sustain itself, then it survives.

Schools can just rent and manage the facilities to the club teams.

I think that is essentially what college bass fishing is.

Like I say, I don't know how they get the money, but clearly they do.
