Would you hire Tim Floyd if Brownell took another job?

Mar 8, 2013, 9:30 AM

Perhaps we should pay a coach that can recruit instead of building a new arena.

Don't think so...

Isn't he a sleazeball?

Not that I'm aware of.

Just like our legendary football coach, there were rumors and the school got into trouble along with a recruit's wrongdoing, but Floyd was cleared of wrongdoing at USC.

You're right about that...

Mar 8, 2013, 9:46 AM

We had discussions with him after Shyatt was fired.

Floyd resigned as USC's coach in June 2009 while the school's football and basketball programs were under NCAA investigation for alleged improper conduct. The NCAA investigated the basketball program's recruitment of guard O.J. Mayo, who left the school after one season and was the No. 3 pick in the NBA draft by Minnesota.

The NCAA found no violations committed personally by Floyd, but USC was penalized for alleged actions by Mayo. As a result, the Trojans self-imposed their own sanctions -- they did not participate in any postseason tournaments the season after Floyd resigned.

I dont know about Floyd but you have to look at a coach that can recruit talent. I think coach Brownell would be helped if he ran an uptempo offense. Our basketball tradition is not great but we should be able to play good basketball based on the conference we play in. Fast paced offense would get the attention of top recruits.

Or you know maybe we should do both....

I for one can see that Brownell will more than likely get 2 more years. We need to break ground on a new facility so if he is in fact not the man for the job we will have this nice recruiting tool for our COACH search.

agreed....you've got to show a next coach/recruits that

Mar 8, 2013, 10:15 AM

The real question is, given our history will a known coach even come to Clemson, much less top recuits no matter how pretty our Gym is? I am afarid we will be forever hiring up and coming coaches hoping to hit on an unknown jewell and getting project BB players because of our history...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we're in a situation like Kentucky in football

Mar 8, 2013, 10:18 AM

if they hit on a hot coach in most cases he's going to leave for a bigger program.

Whatever it takes to legally improve recruiting.

Mar 8, 2013, 9:58 AM

I would prefer a coach who is a well known recruiter AND has a totally clean history, if there is such a thing, but I would not be totally opposed to Floyd either.

I would like to see what Brownell could do with a new arena and very public commitment to the basketball program all-around. Unfortunately, I'm afraid the clock may run out on him.

Either way, major change in the very near future is not an option, but an absolute necessity if Clemson intends to continue to have a basketball program.

especially with the schools coming on board

Mar 8, 2013, 10:10 AM

all of these schools are very good at basketball

ND, Cuse, Pitt, and Louisville are pretty much annual locks into the NCAA tournament.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No doubt - and another reason we are at a crossroad.

Mar 8, 2013, 10:15 AM

Is Clemson basketball going to be relevant and compete? Or do we just throw in the towel and accept permanent mediocrity (or worse)? There is not a whole lot of in between here. Maintaining the same, current course is not an option if we choose not to roll over.

I wonder if the $ is there to commit to both football and

Mar 8, 2013, 10:17 AM

basketball...you would think with an increased ESPN contract with the others coming on board along with ND we'd have funds for both to be competitive but I don't know. Probably it's more of a commitment/belief we can actually win in basketball.

I don't know, but I would hope so.***

Re: Would you hire Tim Floyd if Brownell took another job?

Mar 8, 2013, 10:21 AM

I've always kind of thought that Floyd got a raw deal at USC. I remember reading articles about the OJ Mayo recruitment and it seemed that the out of control USC boosters at the time were more to blame than anyone else. Not to mention an AD who was more than willing to look the other way.

I like the idea of hiring a coach with some NBA ties. It gives him credibility with recruits.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

agreed...without a new arena or at least one under

Mar 8, 2013, 10:26 AM

construction I don't think you can get him.
