Maybe he has straight line speed but not the shifty lateral quickness. Either way he’s playing well.

I think he has looked pretty shifty, or like a ball in a pin ball machine.

SMDH ... He runs hard, he runs “North/South”, he has great

acceleration. He hits the hole hard as soon as it appears. He’s exactly what our OL needs.
Shiftiness is a highly over-rated quality in a ball carrier. Shiftiness can get you tackled for a big loss.
I’m not sure what anyone is seeing in Shipley to question his “top-end” speed. He is a burner!
Right now, he is the antidote to our offensive woes if he’s used effectively.
We’ll see how it goes from here on out.

Shipley is very quick, shifty, and is extremely fast. I mean, if you do not know what you speak of, then do not speak.

Shipley is by far our best all around back but he definitely doesn't have elite top end speed. He couldn't outrun SC State's defense. There was one play where he hit a wide open hole, made one cut to make a guy miss and if he had elite speed like everyone says he would have scored but got cut off by like 3 guys. That would have never happened to Spiller or Etienne.

Nowhere near the best RB on the roster. Favoritism and bad play calling will continue to kill the morale of the offense. Go Tigers!

Our OL needs a “North/south” runner with some quick acceleration, and decisive decision making.
Shipley is that guy.

It is seldom the mark of a great team when a freshman can play right away, much less excell. Still, exceptions occur.

I had my doubts about Shipley and was vocal about it more than once. But this kid has improved a ton since HS when he was just beating kids to the sidelines and in essence, was a kind of one trick pony as a back. That is not the case, he is not CJ spiller by any stretch, but for a true freshman, and fumbles aside, looks like he is going to be pretty good., Anyone who says we are not developing our backs has not been paying attention, we have a bit of a talent issue. I like Shipley, but he is not that Home run threat. He is nifty in space, as is Pace, but we do not have a guy that has the vision to take them to the house on any given play. Dixon has been here 3+ and has yet to do it, ETN did it his 2nd carry.

I did not think would not beat Dixon, and that he should be in Amari Roger's old spot. . I am glad to be wrong here.

Your thinking is sound. I disagree as to him being "one trick" in HS. He was a versatile back. I also disagree as to him not being a home run threat.
I surely agree with you that at Clemson he will develop and improve. He does not have to be the "best ever" to help us win games. I think he fits in nicely with the other backs.

he has put on some muscle since HS, and is looking the part, he may have lost a step, I am not sure. I agree that you do not need to be a sub 4.5 guy to take one the distance though, it is more vision and timing, setting up your blocks, see Renfrow against the gamecocks when 7 guys tried to tackle him and all missed. Maybe Shipley does this every week in practice and it has not happened on the field yet. Anyway, I hope he keeps improving and that fire in him makes him into the next great one. I have no problem being wrong about him if true.

Shipley has not had enough carries to question when he will break a long one and so on. When he only has a few carries a game the odds are against something spectacular.

Tiger Balm1, That is my second favorite Hunter Renfrow TD. I was at that game, one of the few, I’ve been able to attend since I graduated from CU. He simply refused to get caught.

I’m not sure it’s fair to say Shipley doesn’t have breakaway speed based off what we’ve seen in games so far this year. When has he really had a chance to get in the open field? Practically all of his 80+ yards against Tech were after contact. I wish they would pass the ball to him more in the flat.
I was never really a Dixon fan, but disagree that he didn’t have breakaway speed. His average yards per carry was I think second in Clemson history to Travis ETN. Granted many of those runs were in garbage time against bad teams. But he does have the ability to take it to the house. He had several long touchdown runs earlier in his career.
On the other hand he was terrible at running up the middle getting dirty yards. From that perspective, he and Shipley are opposites.
Spiller is the best I’ve ever seen at taking it to the house. But let’s not forget that he was not good at getting dirty yards. His average yards per carry was not overly impressive, especially when you consider the long runs he had. He didn’t have any great or even good OLs, but I remember Andre Ellington averaged more yards per carry then Spiller in that same error.
