Three guys hit it 4 times in head with buckshot, and multiple pistol shots behind ears to bring it down!

Hobcaw Barony (just north of Georgetown) prolly has over a 2000... maybe even closer to 3000. I killed one there a few years ago. They have no natural enemies on property and were starving the deer by consuming their food. US government did a study for some sort of disease about a decade ago and killed hundreds. At that time the count was thought to be about 1500... turned out to be over 3000.

Interested in how you came to murder one on Hobcaw?

The old lady's will says no hunting.
I've killed a bunch there, but because of the will we had to pen them up and euthanize them by giving them catastrophic lead poisoning behind the ear.

of predator killing on such tracts, but yes I agree that with that will I thought you had to catch and then euthanize. I dunno.
Places like S. Island can allow hunting, but I'm not sure how it's managed. I'll ask the manager next time I talk to him. I've heard of grad students trapping/hunting and stuff. Hunting also goes on in the private part of the island. I doubt they put a dent in the population though.

North Island? On Yawkey property?

I've heard of that happening but I never heard of an allowed hunt on Hobcaw. The will is quite explicit and the staff brought poachers to the local gendarmes frequently when I was there.
Many, many moons have passed, I know, and the population of those things were a real problem.
Yuge, very yuge.

Yeah, the Yawkey property. He should know how Hobcaw handles it as well. I'll ask. Good question. I haven't even thought about it, but there has to be a mgt plan in place or a work around that will.

I don't live in an area with those. A couple of questions.

1. Are they good to eat like regular pig?
2. That thing is huge. Will they attack a human?

The wife and I like it the best in spaghetti because of the flavor but lower fat content. For spaghetti I rank 1)Wild Hog, 2)Venison. Beef and Pork distant 3rd and 4th.
Also, it's good to mix into meat loaf for the same reasons.

gamey and funky tasting. Now a young one or a sow less than 100lbs or so, absolutely. It's like grocery pig, but not quite. They are a product of what they eat, a lot of which is acorns, and that can be a bit tannic.
Hogs that big will gore the $hit outta you with those tusks if given the chance. And shootin' them only pi$$es'em off.

as with farm raised pigs.
Europeans have been preparing wild boar raised on acorns on the Iberian peninsula for millennia. There are many ways of curing the meat which reduces the gamey tastes. I recently enjoyed some wild boar salami from Texas. It had a great earthy taste, with strong Chianti notes, smoked over applewood, with a beautiful purple color.

Always good, but always felt like it was on the precipice of being one of those trendy Charlotte restaurants that last about 5 years (Sirrusly, if McIntosh's can't last, what can?). One of my automotive highlights was my Defender making the front row of the valet stand there among the Bentleys and Ferraris.

But it's one of RH Mom's favorite places to eat for big occasions, so we go a few times a year. I think they've hung in there long enough to get past being a trendy fad.
