Why Thursday Night Games Need to Go

Sep 19, 2013, 1:49 AM

I'll be honest, I'm not a big fan of Thursday night games, and after doing a bit of research, I'm even less of a fan.

Here's 5 reasons why Clemson needs to put their foot down on Thursday night games:

Interesting, but I was genuinely confused the first couple

Sep 19, 2013, 3:28 AM

of times you mentioned "USC" in the article. Need you be reminded that USC is in California?

You're doing a good job with your blogs. My biggest

Sep 19, 2013, 5:31 AM

concern with Clemson hosting Thursday night games has been the ability of fans to travel, for many are precluded due to distance and work.

Obviously, the TV folks want the best match-ups possible, but apparently there is a reason why the SEC hasn't played any more games on Thursdays than they have, and I suspect it has a lot to do with travel and attendance...and how their contracts were negotiated.

I'm, also, not surprised a few ACC schools have carried the burden on Thursday games, and I'd agree it's time the other members step up and share. Just imagine the viewership of a Duke or Wake match-up!!!!

Thank you for the kind words.

And while a Duke-Wake matchup wouldn't be easy on the eyes, it would be no worse than Kentucky-Miss St, which happens later in October...

It's nigh time to relegate the Thursday/Friday slate to the dregs of the conference...

I'm not a fan either, but hope to continue what was started

Sep 19, 2013, 5:56 AM

last season, which is making Thursday games a non-issue with regard to the Tigers' performance.

Heck, I'm as old school as they come. If I had my 'druthers we would still have 1:00 kickoffs nearly every satdee. But that horse left the barn long ago.

they players like it and schools that don't get as much exposure want those slots. People who like college football will watch a crappy match up. I will at least. If there's only one game on guess who gets the spotlight?

I will agree that Thursday nights are great for up and coming teams, or teams looking to make a statement. But for more established teams, I think the risk is not worth the reward.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson will become everybody's Thursday night darling.

Sep 19, 2013, 9:45 AM [ in reply to I'm not a fan either, but hope to continue what was started ]

These two Thursday night games gives the recruits, other teams' fans and the Heisman and poll voters an 'eyes on,' Clemson experience.

I don't think folks appreciate what this means to our University and football team.

Re: Clemson will become everybody's Thursday night darling.

Sep 19, 2013, 10:48 AM

While I tend to agree, the numbers don't bear that out. Average ratings for Thursday night games on ESPN aren't all that different for their Saturday games.

Last year, Thursday night games drew an average of 1.8M viewers, which is on par with what ESPN saw for their standard Saturday games. This past weekend, ESPN had their worst weekend in a while, but a 10:30 start time between Wisconsin-Arizona State still outdrew a typical Thursday night

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thursday night football should be for the JV team.

Sep 19, 2013, 9:17 AM

I wish both college and the NFL would stop with this nonsense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't worry! You will see our third quarter team tonight!

Sep 19, 2013, 9:23 AM

Maybe they will even leave the coaches on the field to help the NC St. players out!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Don't worry! You will see our third quarter team tonight!

Sep 19, 2013, 10:07 AM

Hope you are right. I want this game to be over by half time. Like 28-3, in Clemson's favor obviously, or something like that. Final 42-10.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Taylor Swift forgives you..

but only after she writes a song about how badly you screwed up, and how whiny you apology sounded.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This schedule is perfect for a MNC run.

Sep 19, 2013, 9:41 AM

We have weeks to prepare for two teams that have contributed to the continued use of "Pulling a Clemson." That triple option is especially difficult to handle in one week. The last trip to NCS was disastrous and iced the 'Pulling a Clemson,' cake.

We need for both those game to be the only game of the day so that the world will see that we deserve our ranking and admit that we've gotten over the hump.

USuCk has had a creampuff or bye week scheduled pre-Clemson every year for what seems an eternity now. This schedule eliminates that advantage.

You sell hits to fans, I pull for our team with regard for nothing but Clemson University and our football team.

This is a special year for Clemson. We have the players, coaches and now the schedule to make the MNCG. Without this schedule it would a much longer row to hoe.

I view the seemingly lost Saturdays as eggshells. They are worth nothing except to transport their contents. As everyone knows, you can't bake a cake without breaking some eggs.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seems whiny IMO. Clemson hates HOSTING Thursday

Sep 19, 2013, 9:42 AM

night games, not overall.

Though the fact Duke has not participated is intriguing; however, they generally want higher profile matchups, which explains the lack of Duke...

That and the fact that if Clemson went to Dook on Thursday..

Orange would be the only color in the stands. That wouldn't sit well with Kurshelfski!

Re: Why Thursday Night Games Need to Go

Sep 19, 2013, 9:48 AM

I guess I'm the opposite. I see Thursday night games as a chance to showcase our NC-caliber team on national TV. If we suck and blow it like 2 years ago, then we need to be dropped out of the Top Ten so fast we get dizzy. But - if we win convincingly like we are expected to do, then the nation takes notice.

Enjoy the moment. This is OUR time to shine. The nation is watching.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't care what day/night my Tigers play on....

Sep 19, 2013, 10:44 AM

I'm a Clemson Alum & fan...

I'll support them by riding 3 miles down the road to the stadium, traveling great distances, or watching on TV, internet, or anyway I can & have to!

I don't miss very many, except for mostly away games & still go to those when I can...but NEVER home games (since I've been back in the USA)!

I've flown across the ocean from Germany to come to games & bowl-games.
I've even missed funerals, weddings, holidays & other "important" things for Clemson football Saturdays...and Thursdays, Fridays, Wednesdays, & Mondays for that matter (including bowl-games & holiday games I'm pretty sure I've attended a game on all of those days, but can't remember a Tuesday...

some may say that's classless or my priorities aren't in order
WELL FINE! they're MY PRIORITIES & to be a part of games at Clemson tailgating & watching my tigers play with friends & family, travelling with Clemson...IS my priority & makes me happy & proud to be a part of it, certainly even more when we're winning! but I'm always all in.
winning, like we have been recently & will seemingly continue to do is nice.
I have faith. We're gonna have an excellent season to remember & put in the books! put that in your almanac...

I guess my point is: I'm lucky enough to be able to travel to some of our distant away games this year, & whether I can afford it or not, I'm going to because this year will be special. I want to be there in person to witness as much as I can to make the memories.
Maybe my priorities are wrong & there are more important things to focus on...not in my opinion.
I see that we're winning & have great potential to go all the way if we just keep it together & the guys play right like they know they can.

sometimes the games are timed all wrong it seems...God I hate having to get up & rush around for noon games, 3:30 is great but takes the whole day & evening away, night games are awesome & partylicious but then it's really late by the time your done & there's the next morning - ugh. throw in a Thursday night & you put a few tough issues together even.

SO WHAT!? Everybody can't be pleased & will never be happy about all that kind of crap. there IS NO PERFECT TIME or day or whatever for a game, but there IS a perfect time to WIN A GAME!!! That should be when our boys in orange take the field & romp the competition every time. those guys go & do it whenever they have to, whenever the NCAA,ACC,ESPN,ABC,BCS & whoever schedules us to play!
Of course we always want to showcase ourselves & university, put our best foot forward...but winning trumps all that, no matter when or where!

They win for us & we should support them...stop complaining about when & where the games are & enjoy & submerge yourselves in the fact that we're winning & doing something special with Clemson football again. things are looking up for the team & our program(s).
If you have to watch on TV, or DVR it, VCR record it, listen on the radio or online or however...just do it!
pull for the team whether you can be there or not.

there's nothing perfect about football for all our fans except for Clemson Tigers winning them all!

I personally enjoy the mix-up of game times & day/nights played, even though it really makes it difficult sometimes to attend or plan around. more exposure & success on a national stage is always good & when its odd days & times we do get noticed...

That's really all I have to say about that.
Our Clemson fans need to quit whining about things like that & things we can't control. Enjoy the winning! Like Dabo says, that's where it's at!

Until then, I'm heading to Ralleigh to see my Tigers play!

GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Smack the Wolfpack!

I think the main reasons that Thursday night games are

Sep 19, 2013, 10:51 AM

difficult is the short turnaround from a Sat (which we don't have this year), and the fact that they are always at night and night games on the road are just more difficult because of the environment.

The reason that Clemson's record is so bad is that we've only hosted 1 or 2 (2002 NCSU and i think one more prior to that?) while the rest have been on the road. Road teams are just at a tremendous disadvantage on TH night games, and that's reflected in the statistics.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yes!

Re: Why Thursday Night Games Need to Go

Sep 19, 2013, 12:07 PM

Also, since the NFL went to a full Thursday slate of NFL games, viewership for ESPN's college broadcast is down 35%

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The ACC's TV contract with ESPN

Sep 19, 2013, 3:13 PM

requires more Thursday night games than does the SEC's TV contract with ESPN.

The ACC's TV contract with ESPN allows ESPN to select X games to be played on Thursday night. This selection is done will in advance of the season.

ESPN naturally wants to select Clemson, FSU, GT and not Duke, Wake Forest, and Maryland.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The ACC's TV contract with ESPN

Sep 19, 2013, 3:24 PM

I don't disagree at all, but for a conference that appears to be indifferent about football, we have the right to be indifferent about Thursday nights

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

All NCAA conferences are socialist.

Sep 19, 2013, 4:08 PM

TV revenue is shared equally amongst all members.

Clemson and FSU carry the load in football.

Duke and UNC in basketball.

If you point is that it is "not fair" that Clemson and FSU carry the load in football, then, well?? uhmmm... I agree...but it is our best option, unless the SEC or NFL invites us into share their revenue.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: All NCAA conferences are socialist.

Sep 19, 2013, 7:05 PM

I wouldn't have too much of a problem if everyone also earned revenue equally, but Clemson and FSU exert 50% effort to get less than 10% of the revenue

Re: Why Thursday Night Games Need to Go

Sep 19, 2013, 4:33 PM

I think Thursday night games are great, and especially if you win. Key point is that we get national TV exposure when no other college games are on air. Similar to Sunday and Monday night football. Nationwide, not everyone is that familiar with Clemson. Population wise, we're a small school in a state that doesn't get a lot of national exposure. I would vote to keep Thursday night games.
